Business Domain Names

A strong domain name is the cornerstone of any successful business online. Business domain extensions like .com, .biz, .company, and .org are designed to convey professionalism, credibility, and commercial intent. They tell your customers and partners that you are serious about your online presence and invested in your brand.

The .com extension remains the world's most recognised domain, but the business category extends far beyond it. Extensions like .ltd, .inc, .agency, and .partners allow you to communicate your company structure and specialism directly through your web address. For non-profit organisations, .org and .charity provide instant recognition of your mission and purpose.

Whether you are a startup choosing your first domain or an established company expanding your digital portfolio, 365i offers a wide range of business extensions. Every registration includes free DNS management and email forwarding, and you can be online within minutes of placing your order.

Choosing well

How .ltd, .company, .agency and .services differ in practice

Start with what the word after the dot is doing. Some of these name a legal form: .ltd, .limited, .group, .holdings. Most name a trade: .agency, .consulting, .marketing, .claims, .management, .taxi. And a few name nothing much at all. .company, .business, .enterprises, .works and .plus are filler, which is the one thing an extension cannot afford to be. Filler costs you a syllable and hands back no meaning.

The trade words earn their price only when the extension finishes the name instead of decorating it. A design studio called Kestrel gets kestrel.agency in place of kestrelcreativeagency.co.uk, and the address loses two words off every card, invoice and email signature. A private hire firm gets one word plus .taxi, which is complete on a car door. Bolt .business onto a name that already says what you do and you have made the address longer than the .co.uk you turned down.

Then say the finished address out loud to somebody who cannot see it written down. Half this category has a near twin waiting to catch the traffic. .work and .works are separate extensions, run by separate registries, at prices more than double apart. So are .ltd and .limited, and .srl and .sarl. A customer who hears one and types the other lands on a stranger.

None of it moves you up Google. Google published in July 2015 that its systems treat new gTLDs the same as .com and .org, and that keywords in a top-level domain give no advantage or disadvantage in search. A .co.uk does carry a UK signal that nothing in this category has, and that is the trade you are making.

So: .co.uk first, .com if the name is still free there, and one of these afterwards, when your name is a common word, when it shortens the address, or when you want a separate hiring or support address alongside the main site.

What we would suggest

  • A design or marketing agency

    .agency

Most agencies already carry the word in their trading name, so the extension absorbs it and the address gets shorter rather than longer. It is also short enough to say without spelling it out, which .international and .enterprises are not.

  • A charity, club or membership body

    .org

It has been in the root zone since 1985, so readers take it as non-commercial without being taught to. It is open to anyone as well, unlike .ngo, which Public Interest Registry validates against seven eligibility criteria after you have paid.

  • A UK limited company whose .co.uk is gone

    .ltd

Nobody checks anything: .ltd is open to any registrant. The .ltd.uk you might reach for instead is a Nominet second level that requires an incorporated company on the Companies House register, with the domain derived from the official company name, so .ltd gets you there with no paperwork and four fewer characters than .limited.

  • An employer recruiting all year round

    .careers

It does the job .jobs does without the eligibility hurdle. Employ Media restricts .jobs to members of SHRM and to people working in human resource management, while .careers is open to any employer, and it renews for a good deal less each year.

  • A private hire or taxi firm

    .taxi

The extension is the entire service description, so the address is finished at one word and reads cleanly on a car door or a card in a shop window. Nobody mishears or misspells taxi, which is more than can be said for .consulting.

  • A helpdesk or customer support portal

    .support

This is the clearest case in the whole category for a second domain rather than a main one. A support address that sits outside your main site keeps working when the site is rebuilt and the /help/ path underneath it changes.

Mistakes we see with business domains

Worth reading before you register, because most of these cost money to undo.

  1. Registering the descriptive extension and leaving the matching .co.uk free. Anyone can then take the address your customers will type by reflex, and every card you have printed sends them to it.

Do this insteadCheck the .co.uk and the .com before you settle on a name, and register whichever is available even if it only ever holds a redirect.

  2. Treating .work and .works, or .ltd and .limited, as the same extension. They are run by different registries at prices that are nowhere near each other, and a customer who hears one and types the other reaches somebody else entirely.

Do this insteadRead the finished address aloud to somebody who has not seen it written down. If they type the twin, buy the twin too, or choose a name that has not got one.

  3. Assuming a .ltd address proves you are incorporated. It proves nothing, because the registry does not ask, and any buyer who knows that will not treat it as proof either.

Do this insteadPut your registered company name, number, place of registration and registered office in the site footer. UK law already requires that on your website under the 2015 Names and Trading Disclosures Regulations, and it is the detail a cautious buyer actually checks.

  4. Buying .marketing or .solutions in the belief the keyword will help you rank for it. Google published in July 2015 that keywords in a top-level domain give no advantage or disadvantage in search.

Do this insteadChoose on how the address reads and how easily it survives being said aloud, then win the ranking with pages that answer the question people are asking.

  5. Ordering .jobs or .ngo without reading the eligibility rules first. .jobs is a sponsored extension limited to HR practitioners and SHRM members, and a .ngo that fails Public Interest Registry validation is deleted with no refund.

Do this insteadTake .careers if you are hiring but not in human resources, and .org if you are a UK charity. Both are open, and neither leaves your website waiting on a validation review.

  6. Budgeting for the first year only. This category runs from under £15 a year to just under £100, and the number that matters is the one you pay every year after the first.

Do this insteadMultiply the renewal price by ten before you commit. If a shorter address is not worth that over the life of the business, the .co.uk is the better buy.

FAQ

Business Domains FAQ

The .com extension remains the most universally recognised and trusted domain. However, newer extensions like .company, .agency, or .ltd can be equally effective, especially when your preferred .com is already taken. The best domain is one that is memorable and relevant to your brand.

Yes. Extensions like .org, .charity, .foundation, and .ngo are specifically designed for non-commercial organisations. There is no restriction preventing charities from registering .com or other business domains either.

It is good practice to register your brand across several key extensions to protect your name and prevent competitors from using similar addresses. At minimum, consider securing .com and .co.uk if you operate in the UK.

Every domain registered through 365i includes free DNS management, email forwarding, and access to your control panel. You can point your domain to any hosting provider or set up custom DNS records as needed.

Most business domains are registered instantly. DNS propagation typically takes a few hours, though in some cases it can take up to 24 hours for changes to be visible worldwide.

Nothing in the rules. Both are run by Binky Moon under Identity Digital, both arrived in the mid-2010s, and neither asks you to prove you run a limited company. The difference is how they read: .ltd is shorter and matches how most UK firms write it on their own paperwork, while .limited cannot be misheard when you say the address over the phone. Neither one is .ltd.uk, which is a Nominet second level with a real Companies House requirement behind it and is not interchangeable with either.

Only when the name you want is free on .biz and gone on both .com and .co.uk. It launched in 2001, which makes it far older than the rest of this category and better recognised for it. It is also the only extension here that IANA classes as a restricted generic: registrations must be used, or intended to be used, primarily for bona fide business or commercial purposes. That rule is enforced afterwards through ICANN's Restrictions Dispute Resolution Policy rather than checked when you place the order. It never displaced .com, and plenty of readers still treat it as a runner-up.

Pick one and commit to it. A redirect that quietly becomes the address people share splits your links across two hostnames and puts an extra hop in front of everyone arriving from a printed reference. If the descriptive extension is going on the van, the invoices and the email signature, make it the address the site answers on and point the .co.uk at it. If you are not willing to do that, keep the .co.uk as the real one and treat the other as a defensive registration you never advertise.
