What is a .team domain?

The .team domain works for businesses that want to showcase the people behind the brand. Sports teams, project teams, and company "about us" microsites all find .team a natural fit. It also serves co-working platforms, team-building companies, and collaboration software vendors whose product is all about bringing people together.

Sports clubs, work teams and the .team domain

Two very different buyers arrive at this extension and they want opposite things. A grassroots sports club wants a public address parents can find and remember, on a budget made of subs and raffle money. A company wants somewhere to put its people page, its recruitment site or an internal tool, on a budget that would not notice the cost. A .team domain serves both, but the honest advice for each is not the same.

Take the club first. A .team costs roughly three times a .co.uk each year, and around half as much again as a .club. Over a decade that is a set of match balls and a couple of kit washes. Nobody at a registry is going to point that out, so we will: if the club recruits from one town and is found by people searching for that town, the .co.uk is both cheaper and better, because Google reads a country-code domain as a strong signal about where a site belongs. Buy .team when the name reads as a sentence, redlions.team, and the sentence is the whole point.

For a company, you may not need a domain at all

The distinction that matters is whether the site stands on its own. An internal tool, or a page that is really just a section of the main website, does not need a second domain: a subdomain of the one you already own costs nothing, renews with everything else and sits under the same certificate. A separate .team registration earns its money when the site is deliberately its own thing, a recruitment microsite you want kept clear of the corporate domain, or a business whose product is teams: coaching, team building, collaboration software. One caution before you commit. Plenty of people now say Teams when they mean Microsoft Teams, so a .team address may need explaining every time it is read aloud.

On the record: Binky Moon, LLC operates it under an agreement signed on 5 March 2015, and it reached the root zone on 9 April 2015, later than most of the Identity Digital keyword extensions. There is no plural .teams. There is also no eligibility test of any kind, which surprises people who assume a sporting extension must want proof of a club. Whatever you end up registering, put it in the club or company name against an address the committee controls, never a volunteer's personal account. Committees turn over, and a domain tied to a departed treasurer's inbox is the commonest way a small organisation loses its website and its email in the same week.

Second level registrations in the TLD will be open and available to lawful registrants. The TLD represents a generic or dictionary term, and Registry Operator accordingly will operate it in an inclusive manner.

What that means if you are buying one

That is a contractual public interest commitment enforceable by ICANN, not a marketing line the registry can quietly drop. A five-a-side side, a pub quiz team or a two-person business can hold one on the same footing as a professional club. It does not override the reserved name lists, and it does not stop the acceptable use policy applying to what you publish.

The honest answer

Is .team the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.team works well if

  • Your club or brand name reads as a sentence with team on the end, and you want the address itself to say what the site is for.
  • You are building a recruitment or people microsite and want it kept separate from the corporate domain without inventing a new word.
  • You run a team building, coaching or collaboration business where the word is the product rather than decoration around it.
  • The .co.uk and .club for your club name have both gone, and .team keeps the name intact instead of padding it with a county or a year.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are a grassroots club funded by subs and raffles. A .co.uk costs under a third of this every season, and the difference buys kit.
  • The site is internal. A subdomain of the company domain costs nothing, renews alongside everything else and shares the same certificate.
  • Your staff and customers already say Teams when they mean Microsoft's product, so the address needs explaining every time you say it.
  • You want local visibility for a club recruiting from one town. A .co.uk gives Google a UK signal that .team does not.

Running a local club on a small budget? A .co.uk costs a fraction of this and tells Google where you are. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.team vs .club: which should you register?

These two sit close enough together that people ask us which to pick, and the answer usually comes from what the organisation actually is rather than from the domain. A club is something people join and pay to belong to. A team is a group who play or work together. A tennis club with a membership roll and a bar is a club. A Sunday league side is a team. Staff are a team and never a club.

The commercial difference is real too. They are run by separate companies, .team by Binky Moon as part of Identity Digital and .club by Registry Services, and .club reached the root zone more than a year earlier, in January 2014. On our pricing .club is the cheaper of the two by a useful margin for an organisation counting every pound.

Pick .club for a membership organisation, a society or anything with a joining fee. Pick .team when the word completes the name as a sentence, or when the site is about a squad or a working group rather than a membership. Neither carries an eligibility test, so nothing stops you choosing on sound alone.

FAQ

.team domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .team domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. There is no eligibility test of any kind, and the point is written into the registry agreement rather than left to the operator's discretion: second level registrations must be open and available to lawful registrants. A five-a-side side, a school year group, a two-person business or a private individual can register one on identical terms to a professional club. No constitution, no company number and no charity registration is asked for at any stage.

Often not, and a club treasurer deserves the plain answer. A .team costs around three times a .co.uk every year, for ever, and a club found mainly through local searches gets more from the country-code domain because Google reads it as a UK signal. A .club sits between the two on price. The argument for .team is when the name really does read as a sentence with the word on the end, which is a branding reason rather than a search one.

Nothing at all. The extension has been in the root zone since April 2015 and is run by Binky Moon, LLC as part of Identity Digital, with no connection to Microsoft. The practical problem is that people hear the two as the same word. If your customers spend all day inside Microsoft Teams, expect to spell the address out, and expect some of them to assume it is a Teams invitation rather than a website.

The words mean different things and the extensions are run by different registries. A club is something people join and usually pay to belong to; a team is a group who play or work together, which is why staff are a team and never a club. On the commercial side, .club has been in the root zone since January 2014, is operated by Registry Services, and costs less per year. Neither restricts who may register.

No. The root zone contains .team only, so the plural resolves to nothing. That is the safer of the two failure modes, because a mistyped address does not land your visitor on somebody else's site, but it still costs you the visit. Read the address out as a singular word and put it in full on shirts, fixture lists and anything else printed rather than trusting people to guess.

You can, though a subdomain of your main domain often does the same job for nothing. Something like team.yourcompany.co.uk renews alongside your existing domain, sits under the same certificate and keeps the whole brand on one address. A separate .team registration makes more sense when you want the site deliberately distinct, for example a recruitment microsite that should not look like a corporate careers page.
