What is a .plus domain?

The .plus domain signals added value, premium tiers, and enhanced offerings. Subscription services use it for their upgraded plans. Loyalty programmes use it for members-only portals. Content platforms use it for premium content behind a paywall. "Plus" is a word that works across industries because it always means "more and better."

Why .plus rarely beats a /plus page

Before buying this one, try the free version. If you sell a premium tier, yoursite.co.uk/plus costs nothing, inherits every scrap of authority the main domain has already earned, and shares its cookies, its login session and its certificate. A separate yourbrand.plus starts from zero on all four counts. That is the case against, and most buyers deserve to hear it before the case for.

The case for is short and real. Four letters, a word every English speaker can spell after hearing it once, and an address that survives being read down a phone line, which is more than .io or .biz manage. Where the paid tier is marketed as a product in its own right, with its own advertising and its own audience, a separate address stops it living in the shadow of the free one.

It joined the root zone in March 2015, later than most of the business extensions around it, and runs under Binky Moon as part of Identity Digital. There are no eligibility rules and no naming conditions beyond the registry's reserved list, so any available name is yours.

Our steer for most readers: keep the paid tier on a path of your main domain, and register the .plus defensively so a competitor cannot pick up your brand name attached to the word your own marketing already uses. Check the price on this page first, because it is not one of the cheap ones, and a defensive registration ought to be a considered purchase rather than a reflex.

The honest answer

Is .plus the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.plus works well if

  • The premium tier is a product with its own name, its own advertising and its own audience, not just a pricing row on an existing page.
  • You need an address people can spell after hearing it once, which "plus" manages where most short extensions do not.
  • Your brand name plus the word makes a phrase that reads naturally, so the whole address works as a wordmark.
  • You are registering defensively to stop a competitor or a squatter attaching your brand to the word you already use in campaigns.

Look elsewhere if

  • A subfolder would do the same job for nothing and would keep the search authority you have already built on the main domain.
  • It costs more each year than several of the business extensions on these pages, for a domain that is often only a redirect.
  • The word needs context. Without a base product to be more than, "plus" reads as filler and tells a visitor nothing.

Only after a memorable second address? A .online is cheaper and asks less of the name in front of it. See .online pricing.

Head to head

.plus vs .online: which should you register?

Both are marketing extensions with no country signal and no eligibility rules, and they fail in opposite directions. .online is the more flexible: it fits any business wanting a short generic address and asks nothing of the name in front of it. .plus only means something when there is a lesser version of the thing for it to be more than.

That specificity cuts both ways. brand.plus is instantly legible as an upgrade tier. brand.online says almost nothing, which is exactly why it so often turns up as the fallback once the .com and the .co.uk have both gone.

If you cannot say in one sentence what the "plus" is more than, buy neither, and put the money towards a .co.uk you will still want in ten years.

Only when the upgrade is a product in its own right. If the paid tier has its own name, its own campaigns and an audience that arrives without passing through the main site, a separate address stops it being an afterthought. If it is a pricing row on a page you already own, a folder on the main domain does the same job for nothing and keeps the search authority where you built it.

No. The extension has no eligibility rules and no naming conditions beyond the registry's reserved list, so any available name is open to anyone anywhere. Plenty of holders use it as a general brand address rather than for a tier, and it works reasonably well for that as long as the word reads naturally after your name rather than being bolted on.

A subfolder is the safer default for search. Content on your existing domain inherits the authority that domain has already accumulated, while a new domain starts from nothing and has to earn its own. A separate domain also means a separate origin, so logins, cookies and single sign-on between the two need work that a folder does not. Split them only when the brands are actually separate.

Yes, and for most buyers that is the sensible use. A permanent redirect passes visitors and search engines to your existing pages, so the .plus works as a memorable address for print and word of mouth without splitting your site in two. Every domain registered with us includes free DNS management, so pointing it wherever you need is a change you make yourself in the My365i control panel.
