The longer answer

Who .consulting works for, and who it slows down

One oddity to clear first: .consulting is the only extension in this group that does not sit with Binky Moon. IANA records it moving to Dog Beach, LLC in June 2021, another Identity Digital company. That changes nothing for a registrant, but it does explain why the registry record names a different operator from its neighbours if you ever go looking.

The substance is positioning. A .consulting domain states the service in the address bar, which saves a line of explanation on a business card and in an email signature. It works because consulting is a word clients use about themselves rather than jargon the industry invented. Management, IT, HR, planning, engineering: all of them consult, and none of them needs a different extension to say so.

The cost of that clarity is ten characters plus the dot, which is a lot to type and more to read aloud. A firm called Harrow Bell becomes harrowbell.consulting, twenty-one characters before the first slash. Fine printed on a card. Awkward dictated down a phone line. Test yours out loud before you buy it, at normal speaking speed, and see whether the listener gets it right first time.

The other thing to be clear about is what the extension does not do. There is no accreditation behind it. No chartered status, no professional body membership, no proof of anything at all. Anyone can register one, so a client reading the address learns what you claim to do, not that anybody has checked. Credibility comes from what is on the site, not from the last ten characters of the address.

The honest answer

Is .consulting the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.consulting works well if

  • You are an advisory firm whose name gives no clue what you do, and the extension does the explaining in the address itself.
  • Your .com and .co.uk are held by unrelated businesses and you would rather have a clear phrase than a hyphen or a padded name.
  • You work across borders, so a UK-specific extension would narrow how you look to a prospect in Dublin or Frankfurt.
  • Most of your enquiries arrive by email or through LinkedIn rather than from somebody typing an address they heard once.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your firm name is already long. Ten extra characters plus the dot makes an address that is painful to dictate and easy to get wrong.
  • Your clients are UK organisations who find you through search. A .co.uk carries a UK signal that .consulting does not, at a fraction of the annual price.
  • You want the extension to imply credentials. It implies none, because nobody checks: the same extension is open to a first-week freelancer and to a hundred-partner firm.

Winning most of your work from UK clients? A .co.uk is shorter to say, better for UK search, and much cheaper every year. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.consulting vs .co.uk: which should you register?

The real contest for a UK consultancy is between saying what you do and saying where you are, because the extension only has room for one of them.

A .co.uk is short, familiar, cheap, and read by Google as a UK site, which helps for searches that pair a service with a town name. It also moves between registrars almost instantly, because a .uk transfer is an IPS tag change rather than a multi-day process, and Nominet does not publish a UK individual's home address in the public record by default.

A .consulting buys clarity instead. It tells a prospect what the firm does before they read a word, and it is available in names that went years ago on .co.uk. For a firm selling into several countries that is a fair trade. For a firm whose clients are all British, it usually is not.

.consulting domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .consulting domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. There is no qualification test, no chartered status requirement and no professional body membership to evidence. .consulting is an ordinary generic extension open to anyone anywhere. That cuts both ways: registration is quick and nothing can be refused on eligibility grounds, but the extension carries no credibility signal either, because a prospective client knows anybody could have bought it. Credentials belong on the page, not in the address.

At eleven characters with the dot it is long enough to matter, especially if your firm name is also long. The test is not how it looks on screen but how it sounds. Read the whole address aloud at normal speed and see whether somebody could write it down correctly first time. Short brand names carry it well. Three-word partnerships do not. If yours fails that test, take the .co.uk and redirect a .consulting to it.

Not directly. Google does not read the words in a generic extension as keywords, so .consulting earns no ranking credit for the word consulting. What it can do is improve click-through on a result that already ranks, because the address confirms what the listing promises. Rankings come from the pages themselves and, for UK-only searches, from a country-code extension carrying a geographic signal that .consulting has no way to carry.

.co.uk in most cases, on both cost and search. A sole trader working with British clients gets a UK search signal, free Nominet privacy that keeps a home address off the public record, and an annual bill a fraction of the size. Buy the .consulting when you sell across borders, when the .co.uk you wanted has gone, or when your firm name says nothing at all about the work you do.
