What is a .center domain?
The .center domain (American spelling) works for community centres, call centres, data centres, and shopping centres. It's a word that implies a hub: a place where things happen, people gather, or services converge. Despite the American spelling, UK businesses adopt it when their preferred British-spelled alternative isn't available as a TLD.
Who should register .center?

The .center spelling problem for British buyers
There is no .centre. We checked the IANA root zone database and the British spelling has never been delegated, so a UK community centre, leisure centre or garden centre choosing this extension is choosing the American spelling or choosing nothing. Weigh that first, and weigh it offline rather than online. Nobody mistypes a link they clicked. Plenty of people mistype an address read out over a counter or printed on a leaflet.
The extension itself is one of the earliest new gTLDs, delegated in December 2013 under a single-purpose company called Tin Mill, LLC and moved into Identity Digital through Binky Moon in the March 2018 transfer that consolidated nearly two hundred extensions at once. Anyone can register one, for any kind of centre or for none at all, with nothing to prove.
The word covers a lot of ground, and that is both the appeal and the weakness. A data centre, a shopping centre, a call centre and a village hall have almost nothing in common except the noun, so the extension carries no sector meaning of its own. It works as the second half of a phrase, not as a badge. An address like thetownhall.center reads properly. An address like mybusiness.center says nothing at all.
Our steer for a UK organisation: if your visitors are local and will search for you by name and town, a .co.uk does more work in Google UK results and costs less every year. Buy the .center domain when the name truly completes a phrase, and register the matching .co.uk alongside it so the spelling never costs you a visitor.
Is .center the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.center works well if
- The name reads as a phrase: a venue, hub or facility name where the noun is the point and the rest is the identity.
- Your audience is international or online-first, so the American spelling reads as normal rather than as a mistake.
- You run something people already call a centre, such as a data centre, a training centre or a conference venue, and want the address to say so.
- The .com and .co.uk for your name are gone and you want a short address rather than a hyphenated one.
Look elsewhere if
- You are a British organisation whose customers write centre with the r before the e. Every leaflet, sign and phone call becomes a spelling correction.
- You depend on local search. A .co.uk carries a UK geographic signal in Google that .center does not, and costs less every year.
- Your name does not need the noun. If nobody calls you a centre already, the extension is decoration you pay to renew every year.

.center vs .co.uk: which should you register?
For a UK buyer this is the comparison that settles it, because one of these two never needs a spelling explanation and the other always might.
Google reads a .co.uk as a UK site, which helps for local searches, and it costs a fraction of a .center every year. It is also what a British visitor assumes by default when they are told an address out loud. Against that, the good .co.uk names in most categories went years ago, and a .center may be the only route to a short name that reads as a proper phrase.
The practical answer for most centres is both. Put the .co.uk on the signage and answer the phone with it, register the .center alongside and redirect it, and then neither spelling loses you a visitor.
| .center | .co.uk | |
|---|---|---|
| Spelling | American only, no .centre exists | Neutral, no spelling issue |
| UK search signal | None | Read by Google as a UK site |
| Annual cost | Several times higher | The cheaper option by far |
| WHOIS privacy | Paid add-on | Free for UK individuals under Nominet rules |
| Transfer time | Hours to seven days | Near instant IPS tag change |
.center domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .center domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. The British spelling has never been delegated to the root zone and IANA holds no record for .centre. The American .center is the only version that exists, so a UK organisation using it commits to that spelling on every leaflet, sign and email signature. If that bothers you, the usual fix is to register the .co.uk as the address you publish and point the .center at it.
Anyone, anywhere, running any kind of centre or none at all. There is no eligibility test, no proof of premises and no restriction on what sort of organisation you are. Identity Digital runs it as an ordinary generic extension. The only practical limit is the registry's reserved and premium name list, which holds certain short or valuable names back from general registration.
Some will, and the ones who will are the ones you told over the phone. Clicks are safe, because nobody mistypes a link. The risk sits with printed material, radio, vehicle livery and anything read aloud, where a British listener reaches for centre with the r before the e by reflex. Registering the matching .co.uk and redirecting it costs a few pounds a year and closes the gap completely.
It fits better here than almost anywhere else, because data center is one of the few uses where the American spelling already appears throughout the trade press and supplier documentation. The wider point still applies: the extension describes the facility rather than the company, so it works best when the name reads as a phrase. If you sell colocation to UK buyers who search locally, keep a .co.uk as the primary address.
