How .yoga turns a teacher name into a brand

The useful thing about .yoga is grammatical rather than commercial. Most extensions sit after a name and add a category, which reads like a label stuck on. This one sits after a name and reads like a sentence: sarah.yoga, riverside.yoga, monday.yoga. It works because yoga is a noun people already say straight after a name, so the dot disappears when you read it aloud. Very few endings manage that, and for a solo teacher it is worth more than any keyword.

Registry Services, LLC, trading as GoDaddy Registry, operates it, and .yoga is named directly in the acceptable use policy covering its portfolio. Registration asks nothing of you: no teaching hours, no alliance membership, no studio lease. What you do agree to is a warranty that the domain and its use will be consistent with the mission and purpose of the extension and with applicable law, and that warranty is repeated at every renewal rather than signed once.

Two things catch people out. GoDaddy Registry maintains a list of restricted labels and states that the list will not be published, so a name can be blocked with no way to check in advance. You may put a proposal to the registry, but the decision is at its absolute discretion and no reason will be given. Separately, desirable names are classed as premium, and a premium name may carry a higher fee for creation and for renewal, so the raised price repeats annually rather than being a one-off.

The steer: if a studio fills classes from local search, a .co.uk still does more of the work. If the business is a person, and students arrive through Instagram, retreats and word of mouth, .yoga is the better buy.

The honest answer

Is .yoga the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.yoga works well if

  • Your own name is the business. sarah.yoga reads as a sentence in a way that sarahyoga.co.uk never quite manages.
  • You teach online or on retreat rather than from one address, so an extension tied to one country would describe you badly.
  • Students find you through a class listing, a friend or Instagram, where a short spoken address matters more than a search ranking does.
  • You want something people can repeat correctly after hearing it once at the end of a class, with no spelling required.

Look elsewhere if

  • You run a studio that fills from local search. A .co.uk carries a UK signal in Google that .yoga does not, and costs less every year.
  • Your name is common enough that the label you want is likely to be priced as premium, and a premium price applies to every renewal rather than only the first.
  • You teach several disciplines. Pilates, breathwork and sound sessions all sit awkwardly under an address that names one of them and ignores the rest.

Filling classes from local search? A .co.uk does more for that and costs less every year. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.yoga vs .studio: which should you register?

These two answer different questions. A .yoga names the practice; a .studio names the room. If you hold a lease, run a timetable and have a floor people walk onto, .studio describes the business honestly and covers the pilates and the sound baths as well. If you are the business and the rooms are hired by the hour, .yoga is closer to the truth.

They also come from different registries, which shows up in the small print rather than the price. GoDaddy Registry runs .yoga and publishes an acceptable use policy naming it directly, alongside a registration policy that makes you warrant the name is used consistently with the purpose of the extension. That is not a hardship, but it is a condition you renew rather than a box you tick once.

Say both aloud with your business name in front. Whichever one a student would repeat correctly is usually the right answer, and it is a better test than reading them off a price list.

FAQ

.yoga domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .yoga domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. There is no certification to evidence, no alliance to belong to and no teaching hours to declare. Registry Services, LLC sells .yoga to anyone. What you agree to instead is a warranty that the domain and its use will be consistent with the mission and purpose of the extension and with applicable law, renewed each time the name is renewed. The registry may cancel, lock, place on hold, transfer or delete a domain at its absolute discretion if that proves untrue.

It has been classed as a premium name. GoDaddy Registry may designate desirable names as premium at its absolute discretion, and a premium name can carry a higher fee for creation and for renewal. That second half is what catches people out, because the raised price is annual rather than a one-off at sign-up. Ask us for the renewal figure as well as the registration figure before ordering, and price up a longer name at the standard rate for comparison.

A .co.uk, if classes fill from people searching in your town. Google reads it as a UK site, it costs less every year, and it transfers between registrars almost instantly because the change is only an IPS tag. A .yoga wins when the business is a person rather than a place, when students arrive from social media or retreats, and when the address has to survive being said out loud. Plenty of teachers hold both and point one at the other.

No. Free privacy is a .uk feature, because Nominet lets a UK individual registrant keep their name and address off the public record. On .yoga and every other extension outside .uk, privacy is a paid add-on. That matters more than it sounds for a teacher working from home, since the registrant address on a domain without privacy is a home address. Add the privacy service when you order rather than after the record has already been published.
