What .fitness gives a gym brand that .com cannot
Gym names are short, hard and long gone. Pulse, Forge, Grit, Method: every one of those went as a .com in the 2000s and as a .co.uk not much later, which is how the trade ended up full of addresses like forgefitnessuk.co.uk. What a .fitness domain buys is the right to keep the single word you wanted and let the ending carry the category. forge.fitness says in two syllables what the padded version says badly in six.
The registry is Binky Moon, LLC, part of Identity Digital, and its agreement with ICANN contains a commitment almost no buyer ever sees. Under Specification 11 the registry undertakes that second level registrations in the extension will be open and available to lawful registrants, that it will not limit registrant eligibility based on identity, and that it will not disenfranchise lawful users associated with a minority usage of the term. In plain terms it has promised ICANN it cannot turn .fitness into a members-only extension later on, which is a fair answer to anyone worried about buying into a word a trade body might one day want to police.
What the registry does police is what you claim. The Identity Digital acceptable use policy prohibits holding oneself out as having a status, credential or authorisation associated with a TLD when no such status exists, and the registry may deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer a registration at its sole discretion. Fitness carries a lot of titles that sound official and are not, so a site advertising an accreditation it does not hold is exposed here in a way it would not be on a .co.uk.

- You give the address out over the phone. Seven letters is a lot to spell, and a proportion of the people you tell will type .com by reflex.
- Your marketing leans on claims of accreditation. The registry can suspend or cancel a name used to imply a credential you do not hold, and that risk would be sitting on your primary address.

.fitness vs .co.uk: which should you register?
For a British gym this is the real decision, and it is not close if you sell locally. Google reads a .co.uk as a UK site, it costs a fraction as much per year, and it moves between registrars almost instantly because the change is only an IPS tag. A .fitness competes on none of those.
Where it earns its keep is the name itself. The .co.uk namespace has been in commercial use for a very long time, so the short single-word names went a generation ago.
