How L'Oreal's .beauty domain ended up on open sale

The .beauty domain was not built to be sold to you. The registry agreement ICANN signed on 3 December 2015 names L'Oreal S.A., the French cosmetics group, as registry operator, so this began life as a brand extension applied for by a company that makes cosmetics. ICANN records the operator as XYZ.COM LLC now, and .beauty is on open sale with no industry test, no trade body membership and nothing at all to prove.

That history shows in the namespace. It arrived late and quietly instead of in the 2014 scramble, so ordinary words are still there: a first name, a town, a treatment. For a mobile technician or a small studio that is the practical appeal. yourname.beauty reads as a job title and a web address at the same time, and it survives being said out loud in a way that a hyphenated .co.uk does not.

The cost of that clarity is that it boxes you in. A salon that adds barbering, nails or aesthetics later is still standing on an address that says beauty, and changing a domain is harder than changing a shopfront. Buy it for what the business is, and keep a .co.uk pointing at it if you think the offer will widen.

The honest answer

Is .beauty the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.beauty works well if

  • You are self-employed and trade under your own name. yourname.beauty gives the job and the address in one line, which is exactly what a business card needs.
  • The .co.uk and .com for your salon name are both taken, and this gets you the actual name rather than a padded version with "studio" bolted on the end.
  • Your bookings come through Instagram and TikTok, where a short address in the bio does more work than search ever will.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your services already reach past beauty into barbering, tattooing or clinical aesthetics. The extension will describe you narrowly for as long as you keep it.
  • Most of your work comes from local search. A .co.uk carries a UK signal that .beauty does not, and costs a third less.
  • A good part of your client list is older or less confident online. An address that does not end .co.uk still gets questioned, and reassuring people takes time.

Booking mostly local clients? Make the .co.uk your main address and keep .beauty for print and social. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.beauty vs .co.uk: which should you register?

A .co.uk tells Google where you are. A .beauty tells a person what you do. Those are different jobs and only one of them affects rankings, so the split is not really a contest: for a salon or a technician taking local bookings, the .co.uk is the address that earns visibility and the .beauty is the address that earns a second glance on a card.

The gap in annual cost is small enough that owning both is a reasonable answer. Put the .co.uk on your Google Business Profile, your invoices and your signage, and let the .beauty redirect to it. If you ever move town or change the trading name, you will be glad the searchable address is the one you control most.

What people ask us before registering a .beauty domain.

No. There is no qualification check, no trade body membership and no evidence to supply. XYZ Registry sells .beauty on the same open terms as its other extensions, and the ICANN registry agreement behind it is a standard non-sponsored one with no community registration policy attached. Anyone anywhere can register one. That cuts both ways: it makes the extension easy to buy, and it means the address itself proves nothing about training or insurance to a client who thinks it might.

For local search, no. Google reads .co.uk as a country signal and reads .beauty as a generic extension with no geographic meaning, so a salon chasing bookings from people searching nearby is better served by the .co.uk. Where .beauty wins is memorability and availability: the name you actually want is far more likely to be free, and it explains the business before anyone clicks. Plenty of salons run both, with the .beauty redirecting.

Younger and social-first customers barely notice. Older customers sometimes do, and a few will assume a typo. If you take deposits or card payments on the site, that hesitation has a cost, and the fix is cheap: register the .co.uk as well, make it the address on invoices, receipts and payment pages, and use .beauty where the audience is already primed. Nobody has ever queried a .co.uk on a payment page.
