The .tattoo domain, from Uniregistry to GoDaddy Registry
.tattoo came out of the first wave. It was delegated on 8 November 2013, and the registry agreement ICANN signed that August names Uniregistry, Corp., a Cayman Islands company. The operator on record today is Registry Services, LLC, and nic.tattoo now lands on GoDaddy Registry's own page. What never arrived along the way is verification. Nobody checks that you tattoo for a living, and the address carries no accreditation of any kind.
Where it works is as a name a person can actually say. A studio called Blackline can be blackline.tattoo, which survives being read across a counter, printed on a card and typed by somebody who saw it on a wall. The .com equivalent went years ago and the .co.uk has a plumber on it. As an artist portfolio the same logic holds: yourname.tattoo tells a visitor what they are about to look at.
The catch is the annual bill and the narrowness. It runs well over three times a .co.uk for as long as you hold it, and a studio that grows into piercing or permanent make-up is still on an address that says tattoo. Neither is a reason not to buy it. Both are reasons to buy it with your eyes open.
Is .tattoo the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.tattoo works well if
- Your studio name is gone on .com and .co.uk, and this gets you the name itself instead of blacklinetattoostudio.co.uk with three words nobody will remember.
- You are an artist with a portfolio rather than a shopfront, and the address should explain itself before the first image loads.
- Bookings arrive through Instagram, where a short address in the bio beats a long one that nobody is going to type.
Look elsewhere if
- You want walk-ins from local search. A .co.uk carries the UK signal in Google that this does not, and costs under a third as much.
- The studio does piercing, laser removal and cosmetic tattooing as well. The extension will keep announcing one service and ignoring the rest.
- You take deposits online. Some customers hesitate at an unfamiliar extension on a payment page, and a .co.uk removes that doubt for very little money.
Chasing local walk-ins? Put a .co.uk on your Google Business Profile and the signage, and keep .tattoo for the portfolio. See .co.uk pricing.
.tattoo vs .com: which should you register?
The .com is cheaper, universally understood and almost certainly taken for any studio name worth having. That last point does most of the deciding. The realistic choice is rarely between blackline.com and blackline.tattoo, it is between blackline.tattoo and blacklinetattoolondon.com, and the short one wins on every practical measure: saying it, printing it, remembering it.
What the .com still buys is the benefit of the doubt from a nervous customer, which matters at the point where they hand over a deposit. If the budget covers both, register both, take payments on the familiar one and put the memorable one on the wall.
.tattoo domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .tattoo domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. There is no apprenticeship check, no trade association and no local authority paperwork involved in registering one. The ICANN registry agreement behind .tattoo is a standard non-sponsored agreement with no community registration policy, so the extension is open to anyone anywhere. Enthusiasts, collectors, conventions, suppliers and studios all sit in the same namespace. That also means the address alone tells a prospective client nothing about your training, insurance or council registration.
It is neutral rather than bad, which for a local business amounts to a missed opportunity. Google reads .tattoo as a generic extension with no geographic meaning, so it gives you nothing in UK results that a .co.uk would. The things that actually move a studio up the local pack are a complete Google Business Profile, real reviews, consistent name and address details, and pages about the town you work in. The domain is not where that fight is won.
Probably not as your only address. An extension that names one service will keep naming it, on every invoice, every consent form and every card, long after the business has widened. Studios in that position usually end up buying a second domain anyway, which means paying for both. If you already know the offer is broadening, start with a neutral .co.uk under the studio name and use .tattoo for the ink side specifically, rather than the other way round.
