About Dot Project

What is Dot Project?

dotProject is an open-source project management application written in PHP that has been around since the early 2000s. It covers projects, tasks, milestones, gantt charts, contacts, file storage and basic resource allocation, with a permissions system that supports multiple companies and teams.

It was one of the first serious open-source PM tools and ran on a stack that any cheap shared host could handle, which made it popular with small consultancies and IT teams in the mid-2000s. Development is now in maintenance mode rather than active feature work, with security patches and bug fixes appearing irregularly from a small volunteer community.

If you already run dotProject and need a stable host for it, it works fine on PHP 7.4 or PHP 8.0 with MySQL. For new project management deployments in 2026 it is honest to point you at more modern alternatives unless you have a specific reason to pick dotProject, such as continuity with an existing rollout or a custom integration that would be expensive to rebuild.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of Dot Project

I'll be straight with you. dotProject was a great tool in its day, and I have a soft spot for it because back in 2006 it was one of the first PM systems I hosted for a client that genuinely worked. It's still in our installer because we honour what people already use, and there are organisations out there with a decade or more of project history in dotProject that have no good reason to throw it away.

But I wouldn't recommend it to a new project management rollout in 2026, and I think it's more useful to tell you that than to write a glowing description that pretends otherwise.

"In over 20 years of hosting, I've seen plenty of software age into a comfortable retirement. dotProject is one of those tools. It still does the job for the people who already use it, but if you're starting fresh today, modern open-source PM has moved on a long way."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

The honest situation is this. dotProject's last major release was years ago, the developer community is small, and the UI shows its age. If you load a fresh install next to something like Kanboard, OpenProject or Redmine, the difference is obvious. The newer tools have been refined for modern browsers, support real-time updates, have better mobile views and a more active patch cadence. dotProject still works, but it feels like 2010, because in many ways it is 2010.

That said, there are perfectly good reasons people still run it. Some clients have years of historic project records in it that don't justify the cost of migration. Some have built custom modules or report templates around it. Some have staff who know it inside out and would rather keep using a familiar tool than retrain everyone. All of those are legitimate.

If you fall into one of those camps, our hosting handles dotProject without trouble. PHP 8.0 is the safest version for it. PHP 8.5 generally works for the recent community-patched releases, but I'd test in a staging copy first. MySQL 8 is fine. Daily backups are the most important feature for an older PHP application like this, because if a security patch lags and something goes wrong, fast restore is your friend.

If you're starting from scratch, I'd point you at the alternatives section below. dotProject is still our installer because we don't strip out tools that real customers depend on, but new installs in 2026 are rare and I want you to make the decision with eyes open.

One bit of practical advice. If you do install it, lock down the admin login with a strong password, IP allow-list it where possible, and keep an eye on the project's mailing list for any security advisories. An older PHP app needs more vigilance than something with active development.

Where Dot Project Fits

Best for

Organisations already running dotProject with significant project history, custom modules or staff trained on the platform, where migration cost would outweigh the benefits of a more modern alternative. It also suits hobbyists or self-hosters who want a simple, lightweight PM tool with no monthly fees and don't mind running older PHP software. Not recommended for new commercial rollouts in 2026.

Watch for

dotProject is in maintenance rather than active development, with infrequent releases and a small volunteer community. The UI feels dated, mobile views are weak, and modern features like real-time collaboration or rich integrations are absent. Security patch turnaround is slower than mainstream PM tools, so you must keep the install isolated, well backed up and monitored. New installs in 2026 are rare for good reason.

A Dot Project case from our books

A small UK engineering consultancy moved to us in 2024 from a competitor host that was about to drop PHP 7.4 with no migration path for older PHP applications. They had been running dotProject since 2011, with around 600 closed projects, several thousand tasks and three staff who knew the system inside out. A migration to OpenProject or Redmine had been quoted by an outside developer at £4,200 plus retraining time, and they didn't want to spend it.

We migrated their dotProject install onto our shared £5.99 plan, kept it on PHP 8.0 for safety, and configured daily backups plus weekly off-site snapshots. We also helped them strip out a couple of unused modules to reduce the attack surface. Total ongoing cost dropped from £21 a month at the previous host to £5.99 a month with us. The install has been stable for the 14 months they've been with us, and they have a clean exit plan to OpenProject when they next refresh their internal IT, probably 2027.

What we would tell anyone in the same spot: if dotProject still works for you, there's no shame in keeping it on tuned hosting while you plan the next move properly. Don't let a host migration force a software migration.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting Project Management Software apps

What we look for in project management software hosting

Self-hosted project management apps put more pressure on the database than people expect. Open tickets, time entries, comments, and history rows accumulate and a busy team adds rows steadily for years. We tune the InnoDB buffer pool generously, run nightly database snapshots separately from the file backup, and recommend Redis object caching once active user count crosses fifty. For agencies running per-client workspaces, we configure proper SSL and SMTP so notifications arrive cleanly.

FAQ

Dot Project Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running Dot Project on our hosting.

Probably not, and I want to be honest with you about that. dotProject is in maintenance mode rather than active development. For a new rollout I would suggest looking at OpenProject, Redmine, Kanboard or one of the modern open-source PM platforms first. They have active communities, regular security patches and modern interfaces. dotProject is still in our installer because existing users depend on it, but it isn't my recommendation for new installs.

Yes. dotProject is light on resources and runs fine on our £5.99 shared plan. We support PHP 8.0 alongside the latest PHP versions, which gives you a stable target for older PHP applications like this. MySQL 8 works well with it. Daily backups are included on every plan, and we recommend you take advantage of them given that this is an older application with slower patch cycles.

PHP 8.0 is the safest target for current community-patched dotProject releases. PHP 8.3 sometimes works but can throw deprecation notices or break specific modules depending on which fork you are running. We let you choose your PHP version per site from the control panel, so you can test on PHP 8.3 in a staging copy and only switch the live site if everything passes. Get in touch if you want help setting that up.

Yes, and we do it for free. The migration involves copying the file tree, exporting the MySQL database and importing it on our servers, then updating the configuration file. We handle all of that. Most dotProject migrations finish overnight with under 30 minutes of downtime, and we test the destination thoroughly before pointing your domain. Some older installs need their database character set adjusted on import, which we deal with as part of the move.

OpenProject, Redmine, Kanboard, Taiga and Mantis Bug Tracker (for issue-style PM) are the main open-source options that get active development. Each has strengths: OpenProject is the most polished and feature-rich, Redmine is mature and very flexible, Kanboard is lightweight and Kanban-focused, Taiga is the most modern UI. All run on our hosting. We can install any of them with one click, and we can help with a side-by-side test environment so you compare them properly before committing.

Lock the admin path with a strong password, ideally use IP allow-listing if your team has fixed IPs, keep the PHP version on a supported release, and apply community patches when they come out. Enable our daily backups (already on by default) and consider an additional weekly off-site snapshot. We also recommend running a regular security scan with one of the free tools at our /tools/ section. dotProject is not a high-risk app on its own, but older PHP code needs slightly more attention than something actively developed.
