About Expression Engine

What is Expression Engine?

ExpressionEngine is a commercial PHP content management system from EllisLab, first released in 2002. The Lite edition is free, the Pro edition is sold per-site with annual updates. ExpressionEngine became open source in 2018 and is now licensed under the Apache 2.0 licence, while the Pro features remain commercial.

The platform runs on PHP 8.1 or later (PHP 8.3 supported in current releases), MySQL 8 or MariaDB 10.4+, and uses its own template engine with the EE template tags syntax. Core features include flexible channels (content types) with custom fields, granular member roles and permissions, integrated forms and mailing list, multi-site support, and a long-standing add-on marketplace.

ExpressionEngine has a loyal user base in the agency sector, particularly with developers who built sites in the late 2000s and early 2010s when ExpressionEngine was a leading commercial CMS. The platform continues to ship and receive updates. The 365i application catalogue includes ExpressionEngine with a managed cloud server tier as the recommended hosting profile from £9.99/mo upward.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of Expression Engine

ExpressionEngine is one of those CMSs that occupied the same conceptual space Craft CMS now occupies, before Craft existed. It's a developer-oriented commercial PHP CMS with its own template syntax, flexible content types, and a serious-agency feel. A lot of the classic 2008-2014 design-led websites in the UK and US ran on ExpressionEngine, and a fair few still do.

I host ExpressionEngine sites for a couple of long-standing agencies and a handful of independent designers who built their portfolios on it years ago and never moved off. The platform has slimmed down its market share since the rise of Craft CMS (which was originally founded by ex-EllisLab people), but the projects that picked it tend to stay picked, because the editorial UX is good and the underlying content model is well-designed.

What works well: the content modelling is genuinely flexible. Channels with fieldtypes give you structured editorial content without WordPress's plug-in soup approach. The template tag syntax is approachable, somewhere between Twig and a custom DSL, and front-end developers usually find it productive. Member roles and permissions are granular. Multi-site support has been there for years and works.

"ExpressionEngine in 2026 is in the same place ColdFusion was in 2010: a perfectly good platform with a loyal user base, but not where new projects start. We host EE sites for clients who don't want to rebuild and have no good reason to, and that's exactly the right call for those clients."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

What's annoying: the add-on marketplace is much smaller than it was in EE's heyday. New add-ons are infrequent, and several long-established add-ons are no longer maintained. Theme work requires the EE template syntax which, while approachable, has its own learning curve. Pricing for the Pro edition adds up across multiple sites. The deployment story isn't Composer-based the way modern CMSs are, which means you're working with a more traditional FTP-style deploy unless you build your own pipeline.

Hosting profile: ExpressionEngine wants PHP 8.1+ with OPcache, MySQL 8, and reasonable PHP memory. Current EE releases run cleanly on our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo. Shared hosting can run very small EE sites but the application benefits noticeably from a tuned cloud server with OPcache and dedicated database resources. Cache directory write permissions matter, EE caches templates and queries aggressively when configured correctly.

For agencies, we typically set up EE on a dedicated cloud server with separate staging, configure OPcache and the EE template cache, set up cron for the EE scheduled tasks, and back up code, database, and uploaded files separately. Page-load times on a properly configured EE site with OPcache and template caching are very good.

If you're sitting on an ExpressionEngine site that's still working for you, leave it alone. Bring it onto a properly configured host. Don't rebuild for the sake of rebuilding. If you're starting a new project in 2026 and you liked the look of ExpressionEngine, go and look at Craft CMS instead, the team that built EE is now building Craft, and Craft has the active development EE used to have.

Where Expression Engine Fits

Best for

Agencies and designers maintaining existing ExpressionEngine portfolios and client sites, where the build investment is significant and the editorial workflow already works well. Long-running brand and editorial sites where rebuilding for the sake of rebuilding doesn't justify itself.

Watch for

New project starts should genuinely consider Craft CMS instead, built by ex-EllisLab people and where the active development now is. Add-on marketplace is smaller than it was. Pro edition licensing per site adds up. Deployment story is more traditional than Composer-based, meaning you may build your own pipeline.

An Expression Engine case from our books

A small design agency in the North West joined us in 2025 with two ExpressionEngine sites: their own portfolio site and a flagship client editorial site for a B2B publication. Both had been running on a US-hosted general VPS for around eight years. UK page-load times had crept up, and the agency was getting client questions about site speed.

We provisioned one of our managed cloud servers at £14.99/mo to host both sites, set PHP to 8.2, tuned OPcache, configured the EE template cache to write to a fast cache directory, set up cron for EE scheduled tasks, and configured CDN with pre-caching on the public front-ends. Database and filesystem backups were separated. We did not rebuild anything; the migration was a pure lift-and-improve.

End-to-end migration took us around 11 working hours including DNS cutover and post-migration testing. UK page-load times on the editorial site dropped by roughly 58%, mostly latency and OPcache. The portfolio site improved by around 41%. The agency saved approximately £8/mo per site and stopped getting the speed-related client questions.

What we would tell anyone in the same spot: an ExpressionEngine site that worked fine eight years ago is probably also a site that hasn\'t had its host upgraded in eight years. Move it, tune it, keep it.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting CMS apps

What we look for in cms hosting

A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.

FAQ

Expression Engine Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running Expression Engine on our hosting.

Current ExpressionEngine releases require PHP 8.1+ (PHP 8.3 supported) and MySQL 8 / MariaDB 10.4+. OPcache is essential for production performance. Recommended PHP memory is 256MB+. Our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo include all of this with proper tuning. Shared hosting can run small EE sites, but EE's template caching and database query patterns benefit noticeably from dedicated cloud resources, so we'd typically recommend cloud for production EE deployments.

Yes. ExpressionEngine is in our application installer. The installer creates the database, drops the files, and walks you through the wizard which sets your site name, admin account, and licence key (if Pro). Total install time is around 8 minutes. After install, the developer sets up channels (content types) with the field types you need, then builds templates using EE template syntax. Bringing your editor in is realistic once you have the channel structure and a basic template.

Yes, with the right hosting and caching configuration. EE caches templates and queries aggressively when set up correctly, and on a tuned cloud server with OPcache and CDN front-loading we've hosted EE sites doing 100,000+ monthly visits without strain. For larger scale, EE supports query caching, fragment caching, and external cache backends through add-ons. The application is a known quantity at editorial scale; the issue is rarely EE itself but how it's hosted and configured.

Hosting-layer support 7 days a week. PHP, MySQL, OPcache, file permissions, SSL, email, DNS, backups, migrations, deployment workflow setup, and CDN configuration. We don't build EE templates, write add-ons, or migrate channel structures as part of hosting support, those are development tasks we'd quote separately or refer to our sister site 365iwebdesign.co.uk. EllisLab provides excellent application-level support directly. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.

Yes, free with our managed cloud server onboarding. Send us your existing host's FTP and database export, plus your EE licence key information. We'll provision a UK cloud server, restore the codebase and database, configure caching, set up SSL and CDN, run the EE upgrade if you want to bring the version up, and test the front-end and admin before DNS cutover. Most EE migrations take us between half a day and two days depending on add-on count and template complexity.

EE has a strong security record. EllisLab ships security advisories on a clear schedule. Keep core and add-ons updated as releases come through. Our hosting adds free SSL, separated daily backups for code, database, and uploaded files, file permission hardening, OPcache, and platform-level WAF rules. For editorial teams, we'd also enable two-factor authentication on admin accounts (available in EE Pro), restrict the admin URL where practical, and audit log access via the EE logging features.
