Feng Office is one of those applications I have a soft spot for, even though I would not point a brand new team at it in 2026 without a good reason. The vendor description above tells you what it is. What it actually does, in practice, is sit on a small server somewhere quietly tracking work for a team that decided years ago they did not want their data on someone else's cloud, and has not seen any reason to change their mind.
I tend to see it on two kinds of accounts. The first is a long-running client install: a consultancy or a small agency who set it up around 2010, built their workflow around it, and would rather migrate hosts than migrate platforms. The second is the privacy-driven self-hoster, often in legal, healthcare, or public-sector consulting, who genuinely needs the data to live on a UK server they control rather than in a US SaaS product.

What works well: the workspace model is genuinely good for client work. You can carve off a workspace per customer, set permissions tightly, and let the client into just their slice. Time logging is built in rather than bolted on, and the document store treats files as first-class objects with versions and comments rather than dumb attachments. For a small consulting team that bills hourly, that combination still earns its keep.
What is annoying: the interface looks its age, and the mobile experience is poor. Email integration is fiddly and we usually advise people to leave that module switched off and stay with whatever mail client they already have. The plugin marketplace is essentially dormant. Upgrades exist but are infrequent, and we always take a database snapshot before applying one.
On hosting: it runs comfortably on our standard web hosting plan. PHP 8.1 is fine, MySQL is happy, and the application is not memory hungry. We do tune `upload_max_filesize` and `post_max_size` upwards for clients who use the document store heavily, and we set a daily database backup separate from the file backup. A Feng Office case from our books
A south-east UK planning consultancy of about a dozen staff came to us in late 2025 after their previous host gave them notice that PHP 5.6 would no longer be available. Their Feng Office install dated back to 2012 and had eight years of project history, time records, and client documents in it. They did not want to migrate platforms, just hosts.
We set up a parallel install on our standard web hosting plan running PHP 8.1, brought across the database and the uploads directory, and worked through the deprecation warnings the older code threw with the newer PHP version.
