What a .estate domain cannot prove about your agency
In Britain the word estate does at least three jobs. There is the country estate with a shoot and farm tenancies, the housing estate built in 1968, and the agency on the high street. .estate serves all three and separates none of them, so the meaning in your address lives in front of the dot, not after it.
What the extension cannot do is stand in for the credential a seller is told to check. Any estate agent dealing with residential property in the UK must belong to a government approved redress scheme, and GOV.UK names the two: The Property Ombudsman Limited and the Property Redress Scheme. Not joining risks a fine of up to £5,000 and the loss of your licence. A domain proves none of that, and Identity Digital's acceptable use policy expressly covers holding yourself out as having a status or authorisation you do not hold. Put the scheme name and membership number in the footer, and let the domain be an address.
The registry side sets what you can rely on. IANA has .estate entering the root zone on 8 November 2013, delegated to Trixy Park, LLC, moving to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 transfer of 196 extensions. Its ICANN contract, signed on 27 August 2013, is Base and Non-Sponsored, so no professional body vets applications. A rival agency two towns over can register the .estate version of your trading name this afternoon.
It works well as a short, sayable address for one arm of a firm: lettings, land, new homes, pointed at a section of the main site. It works less well as the only address on a For Sale board, because a board is read from a moving car by somebody who will type it from memory an hour later, and British memory defaults to .co.uk.
Is .estate the right choice for you?

- You are launching a new agency and every sensible .co.uk in your town has been held by an incumbent since the early 2000s.
Look elsewhere if
- Your instructions come from local sellers searching by town name. Google reads a .co.uk as a UK site; a .estate points nowhere in particular.
- The address is going on For Sale boards outside other people's houses. Boards are read at speed, and an unfamiliar ending is a wrong turn.
- You email completion statements and deposit instructions. An address a client does not instantly recognise is the gap payment redirection fraud works through.

.estate vs .properties: which should you register?
Both sit with the same registry at the same price, both are open to anyone, and both reached the root zone within three months of each other. The difference is number. Estate is singular and can mean the land itself. Properties is plural and implies a list.
.estate suits a firm whose name already sounds like an agency, and rural practices where the word describes the asset. .properties suits a management arm or an investment vehicle with real stock behind it, where a visitor expects to land on a schedule of units.
Say your own name against both before deciding. Plural endings are the ones people get wrong, and .property exists in the root zone as a separate extension under a different operator, so a customer guessing at the singular reaches a stranger rather than an error page.

Ask us directlyNo. .estate is open to anyone in any country, with no membership, licence or company number checked at the point of order. That cuts both ways. A photographer, a landlord or a property blogger can register one, and the extension therefore proves nothing about you to a seller. UK residential estate agents must separately belong to an approved redress scheme, either The Property Ombudsman or the Property Redress Scheme, and that is the credential worth publishing on the site.
It is neutral, which for an estate agency amounts to unhelpful. Google treats .estate as a generic extension with no country attached, while a .co.uk is read as a British site. For an agency the ranking work happens elsewhere anyway: a Google Business Profile carrying the office address, contact details that match across the web, and pages naming the streets and postcodes you cover. The extension is a branding decision, and treating it as a search one sets up a disappointment six months in.
Only if you also own the .co.uk and point it at the same site. A board is read from a car at twenty miles an hour by somebody who types it from memory later that evening, and British memory defaults to .co.uk. Print the address a stranger is most likely to get right, keep the other registered, and redirect one at the other. Boards outlive websites, so the address on them has to keep working after a rebrand.
Yes, unless you get there first. Nothing in the registry agreement stops another firm registering your trading name under .estate, and no professional body vets applications. Trademark owners have two routes worth knowing about: recording the mark with the Trademark Clearinghouse, and Identity Digital's Domains Protected Marks List, which blocks a string across the extensions it operates. Neither is free and neither is automatic. For most agencies the cheaper answer is to register the version you care about now.
