What is a .build domain?

The .build domain is made for construction professionals, property developers, and anyone whose work involves putting things together. It's short, it's active, and it works whether you build houses, websites, or furniture. The verb form gives it energy that static nouns like .construction can't match.

Who should register .build?

Construction companies, property developers, web development agencies, and custom build specialists.

Why choose .build?

  • Active verb with built-in energy
  • Works for physical and digital builds
  • Short and punchy at five letters
  • Clear purpose from first glance

Why .build attracts builders and software teams alike

Two industries own this word and neither will let go. On a site hoarding, build is what a contractor does. In software, a build is what a pipeline produces, and every development team on earth has a build server, a build log and a nightly build. The .build domain gets registered by both, and the registry says so openly: its own site pitches the extension at building and construction, at architecture and engineering technology firms, at software companies and start-ups, and at makers and manufacturers.

It is also the odd one out in this group for who runs it. Where most of the property and professional extensions here sit with Identity Digital, .build belongs to plan bee LLC, an independent operator, with CentralNic behind it as the technical registry. Its ICANN agreement is the shortest of the ten: Specification 11 stops after the four commitments every new extension signs, with none of the regulated-sector safeguards the professional strings picked up and none of the extra open registration promises the Identity Digital strings volunteered.

The catch is the price. A .build costs close to twice what .construction or .builders do, and several times a .co.uk, every year for as long as you keep it. What you get is five letters that work as a verb, which is worth real money for a product, a project, a campaign or a technology brand. It is worth a good deal less for a two-van building firm whose customers all live within twenty miles.

The honest answer

Is .build the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.build works well if

  • You are naming a product, a platform or a tool where build is the action the user performs, and the .com went years ago.
  • You are an architecture, engineering or construction technology business selling nationally, where the extension reads as modern rather than local.
  • You want a short campaign address for one development or one scheme that will outlive the marketing but not the company.
  • You need something a person can spell after hearing it once, which five common letters manage and twelve do not.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are a local builder working inside one county. The price is close to double .construction and many times a .co.uk, which is what your customers type anyway.
  • Your customers are not technical and will hear build as an instruction rather than as a web address, especially over the phone.
  • You want the extension to say construction specifically. It does not, because a large share of the registrations behind it belong to software companies.

Building houses rather than software? The .construction extension is unambiguous and costs around half as much. See .construction pricing.

Head to head

.build vs .construction: which should you register?

Same industry, opposite characters. One is a five letter verb shared with the software world; the other is a twelve letter noun nobody could mistake for anything else.

.build is short, active and easy to say, which suits a brand, a product or a scheme. It is also the more expensive of the two by a wide margin, and it brings the technology association with it whether you want that or not. .construction is long and slightly awkward to type on a phone, but it is precise, it costs roughly half as much, and it entered the root zone in November 2013, which means a surprising number of obvious names went early.

If the address will live mostly on printed material and vans, count the characters. If it will live in a browser and a podcast advert, count the syllables.

.build domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .build domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Ask us directly

No. Registration is open to anyone anywhere with no trade requirement, and the registry markets the extension at software firms and makers as well as at builders. That breadth cuts both ways. You can register one for a product or a platform without stretching the word, and the extension alone will not tell a visitor you are in construction. The name in front of the dot has to do that work.

plan bee LLC has operated .build since it was delegated in January 2014, with CentralNic providing the technical registry behind it. That makes it one of the few independent operators in this category, where most extensions belong to Identity Digital. In practice the difference is invisible to a customer: the DNS, the DNSSEC support and the transfer process behave the same as on any other new extension.

Short strings command higher wholesale prices, and the registry has priced .build as a premium five letter word rather than as a trade extension. Nothing technical separates them. If you are buying on cost and the extension only has to say which industry you are in, .construction and .builders both do that for roughly half the annual bill, and a .co.uk does it for a small fraction of either.

Yes, and plenty of teams do. The word maps directly onto continuous integration, so an address like status.build or docs.build reads naturally to developers and there is no eligibility rule to breach. The only thing worth checking is whether the construction association cuts across your positioning, because the extension carries both meanings and you cannot choose which one a first-time visitor applies.
