What is MyBB?
MyBB is a free, open-source forum application written in PHP and licensed under the LGPL. It first appeared in 2002 as MyBBoard and has had steady development ever since, with a stable release line and an active core team. The platform is built around traditional bulletin-board concepts: forums, threads, posts, member groups, and a permission system that lets administrators carve up access at category and forum level.
The codebase is lighter than phpBB and the admin control panel is generally considered easier to work with day to day. MyBB ships with a templating system that allows theme authors to customise nearly every page without touching core, and a plug-in API that supports moderation tools, anti-spam plug-ins, attachment handling, and integration with external user databases.
MyBB sits in a useful middle ground between very lightweight forums and the heavier phpBB and Discourse alternatives. The 365i one-click installer includes MyBB for hobby communities, fan sites, support forums, and small membership organisations who want a self-hosted, self-controlled discussion platform without a monthly SaaS bill.
365i’s editorial review of MyBB
MyBB is, in my view, the easiest of the traditional PHP forum platforms to actually live with. I've installed phpBB more times than MyBB over the years simply because it's older and more recognisable, but every time I sit down with the MyBB admin control panel I'm reminded that it's a kinder, friendlier place to spend an evening tweaking permissions. The forum tree is clearer. The user-group editor reads like an actual user-group editor rather than a database dump. Theme management is sensible.
The applications I've kept running on MyBB over the years tend to be hobby communities: collectors' groups, small fan forums, narrow-interest support boards. None of them are huge, none get hammered with traffic, but they all have an active core of regulars and a long memory of in-jokes and old threads. MyBB serves that niche really well. The database schema is small, the per-page query count is reasonable, and the software ages gracefully on modest hardware.
What's annoying is the plug-in selection. The official MyBB plug-in directory has had ups and downs over the years and you sometimes find a perfect-looking plug-in that hasn't been updated since 2018. We always recommend testing every plug-in on a staging copy before turning it on in production, particularly anything that touches authentication or attachments.
"If you want a forum that an actual human can administer without reading three wikis first, MyBB is the one I'd point you at. It's not the biggest forum platform, but for hobby communities under five thousand members it's the most pleasant to operate."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
Hosting-wise, MyBB is undemanding. Our shared hosting at £5.99/mo handles a typical hobby forum without breaking a sweat. PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, 256MB memory, and our autoscaling cloud platform with unlimited LVE resources mean a sudden post-thread rush after a popular link doesn't take the site down. We've watched MyBB sites comfortably absorb 30x normal traffic for an evening without the kind of CPU throttling you'd see on cheap shared elsewhere.
The two operational watch-outs I'd flag are the attachment folder, which grows quietly over years, and the search index tables, which can get heavy on busy boards. Both are easily managed: include attachments in your daily backup (we do that automatically), and rebuild the search index periodically through admin if search performance starts dragging. Cron-driven tasks for things like recurring backup notifications and digest emails work fine on shared, no special config needed.
If you're choosing between MyBB and phpBB for a new community, my honest advice is to install both on a staging URL, spend an hour in each admin panel, and pick the one that doesn't make you sigh. They cover similar ground. The one you'll actually maintain is the better choice. We'll migrate you for free either way if you change your mind in the first 90 days.

Where MyBB Fits
Best for
Hobby communities, collectors' groups, fan forums, niche support boards, and small membership organisations of up to a few thousand members who want a self-hosted forum with a friendly admin panel. Anyone who finds phpBB's control panel daunting and wants something that reads more like a normal application.
Watch for
Plug-in directory has variable maintenance quality, with some plug-ins abandoned for years. Theme selection is smaller than phpBB and themes can look dated without custom CSS work. The default search can struggle on very large boards (50k+ posts) and benefits from periodic index rebuilds or an external search add-on.

A MyBB case from our books
A model railway enthusiasts' group based in the North East joined us in late 2024 with a 12-year-old MyBB forum running on a tired shared host. They had roughly 1,400 members, around 38,000 posts, and a small but dedicated daily-active group of about 90 users. Page loads were running at three to four seconds, attachments occasionally failed, and the admin panel sometimes timed out when editing user groups.
We migrated them to our shared hosting at £5.99/mo, upgraded MyBB from a 2019 release to current stable in a staging copy first, regenerated the search index, and moved the attachments folder into a structured per-year layout because they wanted to be able to find old layout photos by year of upload. PHP went to 8.3, MySQL 8, free SSL across the whole domain, and we set their daily backup retention to 30 days.
End-to-end the project took about seven working hours over three days. Page response dropped to under 600 milliseconds, attachment uploads stopped failing, and the chairman got their evening admin sessions back.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: a MyBB forum running poorly is almost always a host problem rather than a software problem. Move it before you give up on it.

What we look for in forum software hosting
Forum software has aged interestingly. The core engineering questions have not changed in fifteen years (database schema for threads, search across many posts, spam handling, mail flow for notifications), and we have tuned for them on shared hosting since 2002. Our default PHP and MySQL settings cope with forums up to several hundred thousand posts. Above that, the shape of the queries matters more than raw CPU and a small managed cloud server with predictable I/O is the right step.

Beyond Forum Software, our one-click installer covers 79 open-source PHP applications across 27 categories. A small selection from across the catalogue:
MyBB Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running MyBB on our hosting.
MyBB needs PHP 7.4 or later (PHP 8.5 is fine and what we run by default), MySQL 5.6+ or MariaDB equivalent, and a small handful of standard PHP extensions including GD for avatar resizing. Our shared hosting from £5.99/mo includes all of that plus 256MB PHP memory, more than MyBB ever needs. We've hosted MyBB sites for years without specialist server tuning. If you're coming from a much older version of MyBB, we can also enable older PHP versions on request.
Yes. MyBB is in our one-click installer and the install takes a couple of minutes. The installer creates the database, drops the files in, and gives you the admin login. From there you'll set your forum name, basic categories, and a starter theme. Most people are ready to invite members within 30 minutes. We don't style your forum or write your category descriptions, but we can help with anything technical, and free migrations cover existing MyBB sites.
They occupy similar ground. phpBB is older, has a much bigger plug-in and theme ecosystem, and is more recognisable. MyBB is lighter, has a friendlier admin panel, and is in my experience easier to operate day to day. For a small to medium hobby forum, MyBB is often the more pleasant choice. For a very large community where you want maximum extensions, phpBB has the edge. We host both and we'll migrate between them free of charge if you change your mind.
Yes, comfortably. We've hosted MyBB forums with several thousand members and tens of thousands of posts on standard shared plans without issue. Once you head past around 100,000 posts and a heavily concurrent user base, you might want to consider our cloud hosting from £9.99/mo for the extra headroom and dedicated resources. The MyBB software itself scales fine, the question is whether your traffic profile justifies a step up in plan.
We provide hosting-layer support 7 days a week, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays included. That covers PHP, MySQL, cron, SSL, email, DNS, file permissions, backups, and migrations. We don't debug custom MyBB plug-ins or write theme overrides for you, that's development work. For application-level questions the official MyBB community forums are an excellent resource and the MyBB team are responsive. Our datacentre partner monitors infrastructure 24/7.
MyBB has a reasonable security record and the core team patches issues promptly when they arise. Keep core and plug-ins updated, use strong admin passwords, and consider installing one of the community two-factor authentication plug-ins for admin accounts. We add free SSL, daily backups, file-permission hardening, and platform-level WAF rules. Don't leave abandoned admin accounts active, and audit your moderator list once a year. That covers most of what realistic forum security needs.
