About Simple Machines Forum

What is Simple Machines Forum?

Simple Machines Forum, usually shortened to SMF, is a free, open-source bulletin-board platform that's been actively developed since 2003. It powers tens of thousands of community forums worldwide, from hobbyist groups to long-running technical communities and member-led organisations.

SMF gives you everything a traditional forum needs: nested boards and categories, threaded topics, private messages, user groups with permissions, polls, attachments, BBCode formatting, full-text search, an ability for moderators to merge and split topics, and a mature anti-spam toolkit including question/answer verification, email blacklists, and IP banning. It speaks several languages out of the box and has a long-standing translation community.

Technically it runs on PHP and MySQL, supports PHP 8.3 in current releases, and has modest resource requirements. A small forum (a few hundred users, low daily activity) runs comfortably on shared hosting. Larger communities with tens of thousands of members and high daily post volume usually move to a cloud server, but SMF is lighter than many competitors and scales further on shared than people expect.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of Simple Machines Forum

SMF is one of those platforms I have a lot of time for, mainly because it's been quietly doing what it does for over 20 years without changing into something it's not. Forum software has had its moments of fashion (Discourse with its single-page-app feel, Flarum with its modern stack, NodeBB with its Node.js underpinnings) and SMF has watched them all come and gone while serving its users.

In 2026, the case for SMF is largely about familiarity, low resource requirements, and a deeply mature moderation toolkit. It looks like a forum, it works like a forum, and the people who choose it usually want exactly that. They're not looking for a real-time chat overlay, they're looking for thread-based discussion that they can come back to in a week and still follow.

"The communities that thrive on SMF are the ones where the conversation is the product. Long threads, deep moderation, member relationships built up over years. Modern forum software optimises for new-user activation, which is great for growth but worse for the people who've been there for ten years and just want to read the thread without a notification panel popping up."

Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting

From a hosting perspective SMF is well-behaved. The PHP footprint is modest, the database queries are well-indexed, and we haven't run into the kind of pathological full-table scans you sometimes see on phpBB or vBulletin installs that have grown without maintenance. Search works through MySQL's full-text indexing by default, which is fine up to a few hundred thousand posts. Beyond that, you can plug in a third-party search backend, but most installs never hit that ceiling.

The active anti-spam features matter. AI-driven registration spam has become a serious problem for forums in the last two years, and SMF's combination of question-and-answer verification, integration with services like StopForumSpam, and the ability to require moderator approval for first posts means a well-configured SMF site stays clean with sensible effort. I've seen new operators get overwhelmed by spam in the first month and then never recover. Get the anti-spam config right at install time.

One-click install on 365i, PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, free SSL, daily backups (which matter for forum data), and 7-day expert support if you need help with theming or moderation config. From £5.99 a month for shared, free migration if you're coming from phpBB, vBulletin, or another SMF install on a different host.

Where Simple Machines Forum Fits

Best for

Established hobbyist communities, member-led organisations, technical user groups, and any forum where thread-based discussion matters more than real-time chat. Particularly strong if you have a moderation team that wants granular tools (merge, split, lock, sticky, soft-delete) and a long-form discussion culture rather than a quick-reaction one.

Watch for

Default theme looks dated and you'll want to spend time on theming or buy a modern theme. No native real-time updates; the page-refresh model feels old to younger users. Mobile experience is functional but not best-in-class. AI spam registration is a real problem you must configure against at install. Plugin marketplace is smaller than it once was.

A Simple Machines Forum case from our books

A long-running classic motorcycle enthusiasts club came to us in mid-2025 looking to move their SMF forum off a host that had aggressively throttled their PHP execution. About 4,200 registered members, 18 years of forum history, around 320,000 posts across 40 boards.

We migrated them to a £5.99 shared plan over a single weekend. Database export was 1.1 GB, attachments were 4.8 GB, total transfer took just under two hours including testing. We tightened the anti-spam config (the previous host had let through dozens of spam registrations a day in the previous month), enabled the question/answer verification, integrated StopForumSpam, and required moderator approval for first posts.

In the six months since, spam registrations have dropped from a peak of about 80 a day to fewer than 5 a week. Page-load times improved noticeably for members because PHP was no longer being throttled. Their total hosting cost was £35.94 against £180 they were paying the previous host, plus the moderation team got their evenings back.

What we would tell anyone in the same spot: forum data is your community\'s memory. Backup discipline matters, anti-spam matters, and host throttling is a slow-acting poison.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting Forum Software apps

What we look for in forum software hosting

Forum software has aged interestingly. The core engineering questions have not changed in fifteen years (database schema for threads, search across many posts, spam handling, mail flow for notifications), and we have tuned for them on shared hosting since 2002. Our default PHP and MySQL settings cope with forums up to several hundred thousand posts. Above that, the shape of the queries matters more than raw CPU and a small managed cloud server with predictable I/O is the right step.

FAQ

Simple Machines Forum Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running Simple Machines Forum on our hosting.

Yes, very well. SMF is one of the lighter forum platforms in resource terms. Our £5.99 shared plan handles forums with thousands of members and hundreds of thousands of posts without any tuning. The platform caches output where appropriate and the database queries are well-indexed. You'd only need to consider a cloud server if you're running a high-volume community with sustained concurrent users in the hundreds.

Discourse is the modern, real-time-feeling option, JavaScript-heavy and resource-hungry, and best for active discussion. phpBB is closest to SMF in spirit but the development cadence has been slower in recent years. SMF sits in the middle: traditional forum feel, lighter than Discourse, more actively developed than phpBB. If your community values long-form threads and stable moderation, SMF is a strong choice.

A combination of question-and-answer verification (you write a custom question only humans on your topic would know), StopForumSpam integration (free service that flags known spammer IPs and emails), and moderator approval for first posts. We configure these by default during install. Done properly, you'll see almost no spam getting through. Done casually, you'll be drowning in it within a fortnight.

Yes, SMF has built-in converters for phpBB, vBulletin, MyBB, and several others. The converters import users, posts, private messages, and attachments. URL structures change, so plan a redirect map before launch to preserve SEO. We'll run the migration as part of our free migration service if you're moving to 365i. Plan a day for the conversion plus testing on an established forum.

The current default theme is responsive and works on mobile, though it doesn't feel like a native app. There are several third-party mobile-first themes available from the SMF community, and a few paid ones that match modern design conventions. If you're launching a new forum where most traffic will be mobile, plan to invest some time in theming or buy a maintained theme rather than relying on the default.

Two pieces matter: the database (which holds posts, users, settings, private messages) and the attachments folder (which holds uploaded files separately). Our daily backups capture both automatically. SMF also has a built-in database backup feature in the admin panel for moderators who want a manual backup before a major change. Restore is straightforward if anything ever goes wrong; we've done it for clients more than once.
