What is Magento?
Magento Open Source is a PHP-based ecommerce platform now stewarded by Adobe, with a heritage going back to Varien in 2008. The codebase is licensed under the OSL and aimed at mid-market and enterprise retailers who need fine-grained control over catalogue, pricing, and customer segmentation.
Out of the box it handles multi-store, multi-currency, multi-language, layered navigation, complex tax rules, B2B price lists, and gift card or store credit logic. Adobe Commerce is the paid edition that adds page builder, BI dashboards, and managed support on top of the same core.
Magento is heavy. It expects PHP 8.2 or higher, MySQL or MariaDB, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for catalogue search, Redis for sessions and cache, and Composer for installation. It runs on a LEMP stack but does not run well on shared hosting at any meaningful traffic level.
365i’s editorial review of Magento
I will give you the honest answer first, because Magento deserves it. If your shop has fewer than around 500 SKUs and you are doing under £100k a year, you almost certainly do not want Magento. Pick something lighter, host it on our standard web hosting plan, and put the saved infrastructure budget into product photography or paid ads. WooCommerce, AbanteCart, or PrestaShop will all serve you better.
That said, when Magento is the right tool, nothing else really fits. We have shops on our managed cloud servers running tens of thousands of SKUs, dozens of stores in one installation, and B2B catalogues with customer-specific pricing that no other open-source platform does cleanly. The trade-off is real engineering. You need Composer, Elasticsearch, Redis, a CDN, and someone who can read a stack trace.
"Magento is the right answer roughly ten percent of the time it gets chosen. Pick it for catalogue depth and B2B logic, not for the brand name, and budget for a managed cloud server from day one."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
What works well: the catalogue model is the best in open-source ecommerce, full stop. Configurable products, custom options, tier pricing, and category permissions are first-class. The admin is dense, but once your team learns it they move quickly. The REST and GraphQL APIs are mature, which matters if you are running headless or feeding a mobile app.
What's annoying: the install is fiddly. Composer pulls a long list of dependencies, the setup wizard expects exact versions of everything, and a missed PHP extension will hold the whole thing up. Upgrades between minor versions are usually fine. Major version upgrades have historically been a project in their own right, and we plan a staging environment, a database snapshot, and a rollback window for every one.
Hosting-stack notes from running this on our platform: budget at least 4 GB of RAM for a real Magento install, set PHP memory to 2 GB or higher for the admin, give Elasticsearch its own service, and put Redis in front of sessions and full-page cache. None of that is shared-hosting territory. Our managed cloud servers from £9.99 a month start at a tier that will run a quiet Magento store, and we will tell you honestly which tier fits your traffic before you commit. We have moved a few shops down a tier after launch when their numbers came in lower than feared, so do not over-buy on day one.

Where Magento Fits
Best for
Mid-market UK retailers with deep catalogues (typically 1,000 SKUs upwards), B2B sellers needing customer-specific price lists, and multi-store groups running several brands or regions from one codebase. Shops with in-house or agency development resource get the most value, since Magento rewards engineering investment. Plan for a managed cloud server with Elasticsearch and Redis from launch, not after a slow Black Friday.
Watch for
Magento is overkill for small shops and will punish you with infrastructure cost and developer time. The default admin is dense and takes new staff a week or two to feel comfortable in. Major version upgrades are projects, not afternoons, so price them in. The third-party extension market is large but quality varies wildly, and a bad module can wreck a checkout, so audit anything you bolt on.

A Magento case from our books
A midlands B2B distributor with around 14,000 SKUs and roughly 600 trade accounts came to us last summer after their existing host buckled during a quarterly catalogue update. They were on Magento Open Source 2.4 and the reindex was taking close to forty minutes, locking the admin and slowing the storefront for trade buyers. We moved them onto a four-core managed cloud server, gave Elasticsearch its own 2 GB service, and put Redis in front of sessions and the full-page cache. Reindex time dropped to around six minutes. Average storefront response time on logged-in trade pages went from roughly 1.8 seconds to under 600 ms. They processed about £42,000 of trade orders in the first week post-migration with no checkout timeouts and one minor bug we fixed at the application layer.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: if your reindex is hurting buyers, the answer is almost never another caching plugin. It is more cores, faster storage, and a properly resourced search service.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in ecommerce hosting
Hosting an ecommerce app well is rarely about raw CPU. It is about three things we end up tuning for almost every shop: PHP memory limits high enough to handle bulk product imports, a database engine sized for the read-heavy mix of catalogue browsing, and reliable cron plus SSL for whichever payment gateway the shop uses. We give all of that out of the box on our web hosting plans, but we will also tell you honestly when an app is ill-suited to shared hosting and a small managed cloud server would save everyone pain.

Beyond eCommerce, our one-click installer covers 79 open-source PHP applications across 27 categories. A small selection from across the catalogue:
Magento Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running Magento on our hosting.
Magento Open Source 2.4 needs PHP 8.2 or higher, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or higher, Elasticsearch 7.17 or OpenSearch 2, Redis for sessions and cache, and Composer for installation. RAM matters more than CPU for most of the day. Plan for 4 GB minimum on a small shop, 8 GB or more for anything serious. Our managed cloud servers ship with the right PHP version and we set up Elasticsearch and Redis as part of the install.
On our managed cloud servers we install Magento via Composer using the official metapackage. We set up the database, run the setup wizard with your store details, configure Elasticsearch and Redis, and set the correct cron jobs for reindexing and emails. The whole process usually finishes inside a working day. You then log into the admin and import your catalogue. We can also stage from your existing hosting and only switch DNS once you have signed off the staging URL.
It depends on traffic, catalogue size, and admin activity, not just store turnover. As a rough guide, a quiet shop with 1,000 SKUs and a couple of hundred orders a month runs fine on our smallest managed cloud server. A shop pushing 10,000 SKUs with bulk imports needs four cores and 8 GB upwards. B2B shops with logged-in pricing skew higher because every page is dynamic. Tell us your actual numbers and we will recommend a tier and a clear path to upgrade.
We support the hosting side fully: server configuration, PHP and MySQL tuning, Elasticsearch and Redis, SSL, backups, cron, and Composer. For Magento application work (custom modules, theme development, checkout customisation, integrations) we will help where we can but we are not your Magento developer. Most performance issues we see are infrastructure-side and we resolve those directly. If you need application-level work, we are happy to recommend Magento agencies we have worked with.
Yes, free of charge on any of our managed cloud server plans. We move the codebase, the database, the media folder, and any custom configuration. We will also rebuild Elasticsearch indexes and warm the full-page cache before switching DNS. Most migrations finish inside a working day with no downtime. We always run on a staging URL first so you can test checkout, payment gateway responses, and admin workflow before going live.
Magento is a high-value target for credit card skimming attacks, so we take it seriously. We install only from the official Composer source, apply Magento security patches as Adobe releases them, and lock down the admin URL behind IP allow-listing where possible. Our hosting layer adds free SSL, daily backups with point-in-time restore, brute-force protection on the admin login, and modern PHP versions with security patches. Keeping Magento core, third-party modules, and Composer dependencies up to date is the single most important thing you can do.
We host Magento Open Source. It runs the same core engine as Adobe Commerce and covers what most independent shops need. Adobe Commerce adds B2B features, page builder, advanced segmentation, BI dashboards, and Adobe-supplied managed support, with licensing on top. If you genuinely need those features and have the budget, it is a good product. If you are choosing between them on price alone, Open Source is almost always the right answer and we can host it for a fraction of an Adobe Commerce contract.
