What is phpBB?
phpBB is an open-source forum platform written in PHP, first released in 2000 and maintained continuously since. Licensed under the GPL, it is one of the longest-running and most widely deployed forum applications on the web. The current 3.x line has had major releases through to the early 2020s, with active security patching and feature work ongoing.
The software is built around a familiar bulletin-board structure: forums, sub-forums, topics, posts, members, and a permission model that supports administrators, moderators, registered users, and bots. Extensions and styles allow significant customisation without core changes, and the admin control panel covers user management, permissions, attachments, polls, private messaging, and search configuration.
Over twenty years of deployment have produced a large extension and style library, an extensive documentation set, and an active support community. phpBB powers everything from small hobby boards to large multilingual communities with hundreds of thousands of members. The 365i one-click installer includes phpBB for new community projects and for owners migrating from other forum platforms.
365i’s editorial review of phpBB
phpBB is, in raw numbers, the forum platform I've installed and migrated more than any other in 25+ years of hosting. It runs on more sites we host than any other forum software, and that's not because we promote it specifically. People just know phpBB. It's the default choice when somebody says "we need a forum" and they don't have a strong opinion about which one. There's a good reason for that, and there's a slightly annoying reason for that, and both are worth knowing about before you commit.
The good reason: phpBB is mature. The codebase has been beaten up by twenty-plus years of real-world use, the security track record is reasonable for open-source software at this scale, and the extension and style libraries are huge. If you can think of a feature you want, somebody has probably written an extension for it. Documentation is thorough. The community forum (powered by phpBB itself) is active and people get answers.
The slightly annoying reason: the admin control panel is, to put it kindly, busy. There are a lot of options. The permission system is genuinely powerful and genuinely confusing on first contact, and even after fifteen years of clicking around it I still occasionally have to test "what does this checkbox actually do" by ticking it and seeing what happens. New administrators sometimes get lost.
"phpBB is the safe choice for a serious forum. It's not the prettiest, it's not the friendliest to set up, but if you want something that will still be running in ten years and has solved every weird edge case you can think of, this is the one."

Hosting-wise, phpBB scales well across our plans. A new or small community runs comfortably on shared hosting at £5.99/mo. PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, 256MB memory, and our autoscaling cloud platform with unlimited LVE resources handle a steady community without issue. We've got phpBB sites with several thousand active members on standard shared. Larger communities, around 50,000+ posts and a heavy concurrent user count, often benefit from cloud hosting at £9.99/mo for the extra headroom and dedicated resources.
Two technical things to watch for: the search index can become a real database burden on large active forums, and the attachments directory grows steadily without anyone noticing. We back both up daily, but search performance on big boards sometimes wants a professional rebuild or a switch to one of the external search extensions. We can advise on which approach suits your specific traffic profile.
If you're choosing phpBB for a new community, my advice is to install via our one-click installer, pick one well-maintained style early and stick with it, install only the extensions you genuinely need, and spend a serious afternoon with the permissions system before you let real members in. An hour of permissions work up front saves a year of "why can\'t this user-group see that forum" tickets. We migrate phpBB sites in for free as part of normal hosting support.

Where phpBB Fits
Best for
Established and serious community sites, large hobby forums, technical communities, fan groups, and any project where the maturity of the platform and the depth of the extension library matter more than admin friendliness. Multilingual communities and forums with complex permission needs.
Watch for
The admin control panel is dense and the permission system has a learning curve that catches every new administrator. Default styles look dated without an updated style. Search can become a database burden on large active boards. Extension quality varies and abandoned extensions sometimes break across phpBB updates.

A phpBB case from our books
A specialist photography enthusiasts\' community in the West Midlands joined us in 2024 with a 16-year-old phpBB forum. They had around 9,800 members, just over 320,000 posts, attachments running to about 14GB, and a small but active core of regular contributors. Their previous host had rate-limited their database and the site had become slow on weekend evenings when their busiest users were online.
We moved them to our cloud hosting at £9.99/mo for the dedicated resources, brought phpBB up from a 2021 release to current stable in a staging environment first, rebuilt the search index from scratch, and reorganised the attachments folder into year/month subdirectories so admin browsing actually worked. We also installed two community extensions for two-factor authentication on admin and moderator accounts and upgraded their style to a maintained mobile-friendly one.
The whole project took us about 14 working hours over a fortnight. Page response on weekends dropped from 3-4 seconds to under 800 milliseconds, search returned to usable speeds, and the moderator team got their evenings back.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: a phpBB forum showing its age is rarely beyond saving. Move it to proper hosting, rebuild the search index, update the style, and watch it come back.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in forum software hosting
Forum software has aged interestingly. The core engineering questions have not changed in fifteen years (database schema for threads, search across many posts, spam handling, mail flow for notifications), and we have tuned for them on shared hosting since 2002. Our default PHP and MySQL settings cope with forums up to several hundred thousand posts. Above that, the shape of the queries matters more than raw CPU and a small managed cloud server with predictable I/O is the right step.

Beyond Forum Software, our one-click installer covers 79 open-source PHP applications across 27 categories. A small selection from across the catalogue:
phpBB Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running phpBB on our hosting.
phpBB 3.3+ runs on PHP 7.2 or later (PHP 8.3 fully supported in current releases), MySQL 4.1.3+, MariaDB equivalent, or PostgreSQL/SQLite/MSSQL. Our shared hosting includes PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, and 256MB PHP memory by default, all of which exceed phpBB's requirements comfortably. The phpBB community publishes a server-requirements page that we follow closely. We can switch PHP versions per site if you have a specific phpBB version that prefers a particular PHP release.
Yes. phpBB is in our one-click installer. The install creates a database, drops the files in place, and walks you through the initial admin account setup. Total install time is around 5 minutes. After install you'll spend a longer session setting up your forum categories, picking a style, configuring permissions, and tweaking site settings. We don't do that part for you, but we can recommend resources and our 7-day support is available if you hit a technical question.
phpBB has the largest extension and style ecosystem and the deepest documentation, but the densest admin panel. MyBB is lighter and friendlier to administer for smaller boards. Discourse is modern, JavaScript-heavy, and excellent if you want a Reddit-style experience, but needs more server resources than traditional PHP forums. For a serious large community, phpBB is usually the right pick. For a small hobby community, MyBB is often more pleasant. We host all three.
Yes, with appropriate hosting. We have phpBB forums running with tens of thousands of members and hundreds of thousands of posts on our cloud hosting. The software itself scales fine. The two limiting factors are usually database performance under heavy concurrent load and search index size on very large boards. Our cloud plans from £9.99/mo handle this comfortably. For genuinely huge communities we can also discuss managed cloud servers with dedicated resources.
We support the hosting layer 7 days a week, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays included. That covers PHP, MySQL, cron, SSL, email, DNS, file permissions, backups, and migrations. We don't debug custom phpBB extensions, build custom styles, or write extension code, that's development work and sits with our sister site 365iwebdesign.co.uk. The phpBB community forums and documentation are the right place for application-specific questions. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.
Yes, free of charge. Send us your current host's FTP credentials and database export and we'll move the whole forum across, including members, posts, attachments, styles, extensions, and permissions. We'll test login on admin and a sample of regular accounts, plus search functionality, before cutting DNS over. Most phpBB migrations take us between 4 and 12 working hours depending on the size of the database and the volume of attachments. Cross-platform forum migrations (e.g. vBulletin to phpBB) need extra time and we can quote separately.
