Why .uk.net is open when .net.uk is closed
Nominet keeps .net.uk for internet service providers and means it. The registration policy reserves the zone for the network information centre and network operation centre machines of network providers, requires the holder to be an ISP, and requires the name to be the same as or a close variant of the applicant name. To count as an ISP you must be a UK company, partnership, sole trader, government body, recognised academic institution or registered charity, and either be listed as a local IP address registry with a regional registry or run an autonomous system with UK hosts reachable from the major exchange points. The domain may not be used on behalf of another entity, which rules out most reselling.
.uk.net asks for none of that, because it is not part of the .uk namespace at all. It is a name sold beneath uk.net, itself a single registration inside .net, with policies published by 8 Inc. and the technical registry run by CentralNic. Anyone may register one, for one to ten years, with no eligibility test of any kind.
Is .uk.net the right choice for you?

- The address has to survive being read out on a call. Two labels, two dots, and half your listeners will hear "dot net" and stop writing.

Here is the comparison most buyers skip. A plain .net is a top-level domain in its own right, recognised everywhere, and on our list it costs considerably less than a .uk.net. If your name is free at .net, that is nearly always the better buy.
You are paying the difference for two letters, so it is fair to ask what they get you. Not search visibility: both sit inside .net, which Google treats as generic, so neither carries a UK signal.
