Why .irish needs no proof of an Irish connection
The interesting thing about .irish is what it never asks you for. Ireland runs a managed registry for its own country-code domain, and every .ie application is checked: the applicant has to show a real connection with the island of Ireland using a document such as an Irish passport, an Irish or UK driving licence showing an Irish address, a CRO or RBN number, or an Irish VAT number. An application sits on the .ie system for 27 days waiting for that proof. A third-generation Irish American holding none of those papers is not getting a .ie.
.irish asks for nothing. It entered the root zone on 6 November 2014 delegated to Dot-Irish LLC, moved to Tin Mill LLC in 2017, and arrived at Binky Moon under Identity Digital in the 2018 transfer of 196 extensions. Its ICANN contract is a base, non-sponsored agreement, and the section that would carry community eligibility rules is marked intentionally omitted. There is no Irish test because there was never meant to be one.
That openness is the whole proposition and the whole weakness. Anybody can have it, which is exactly why it says less than a .ie does.
Is .irish the right choice for you?

.irish works well if
- You run an Irish business, club or bar outside Ireland and cannot produce the single document the .ie registry insists on.
- Your name is about Irish identity rather than an Irish address: a diaspora association, a heritage project, a traditional music school, a GAA club abroad.
- You already hold the .ie and want the .irish beside it so the obvious variant of your name is not left sitting free.
Look elsewhere if
- You trade in Ireland and can evidence it. A .ie costs less with us, carries the Irish signal in Google, and is the address Irish customers expect to see.
- Recognition is thin outside the diaspora. Say the address aloud and you will be asked to spell it, and a fair number of people will type .ie or .com anyway.
- You want local search visibility. Google reads .irish as a generic extension, so it does nothing for rankings in Ireland or the UK while costing more than either .ie or .co.uk.

.irish vs .ie: which should you register?
These two look like alternatives and mostly are not. A .ie is the official country-code domain for the island of Ireland, run by IE Domain Registry in County Dublin and in the root zone since January 1988. Google reads it as an Irish site. With us it also costs less than a .irish. If you can produce one document proving a connection to Ireland, the .ie is the better buy and the argument ends there.
.irish is for the people who cannot. An Irish bar in Boston, a county association in Birmingham, a piper in Perth: they identify as Irish without holding an Irish passport, a CRO number or an address on the island, and the .ie process exists to filter exactly those applications out. That is the customer .irish was drawn for, and for that customer it is the honest choice of the two.

.ie is the country-code domain for the island of Ireland and .irish is a generic extension that anyone can buy. IE Domain Registry verifies each .ie applicant against a document proving a connection to Ireland and holds the application for 27 days while it waits. Identity Digital verifies nothing on .irish. In search terms .ie carries a geographic signal for Ireland and .irish carries none, and on our price list the .ie is the cheaper of the two.
For most buyers, no. It costs more than both here, it has no geographic weight in search, and it is not an extension most people will guess at. The case for it is identity: an organisation whose whole point is Irishness, run by people who cannot evidence an Irish address or company number, gets something from .irish that no cheaper extension gives them. Buying it for the aesthetic alone is an annual bill for a small gain.
