The .gg rule that catches commercial websites
Begin with the clause nobody mentions. Island Networks, which has run .gg from Alderney since 1996, makes something a Condition of the registration contract that almost no other registry touches. If you use a .gg address for a website with a commercial purpose, you must publish identifying information on that site in a reasonably prominent place. The terms set the floor at what English law requires of a UK commercial site, and list it: company name, postal and email address, registration number, place of incorporation, a way to contact the business by non-electronic means, and any trade or professional bodies you belong to.
That is not a country restriction. Anyone anywhere may register a .gg and no local presence is required. It is an obligation that attaches after you register, and it is exactly the sort of thing an esports team or a gaming brand using .gg for the "good game" reading may not realise it has agreed to.
Two further clauses from the same terms deserve a read before you commit. The registry may refuse an application or cancel a registration where the name, in the hands of that registrant, appears likely to be used in a way that could damage the reputation of the Channel Islands. And under its registrant identification policy it can require your registrar to evidence who the registrant is and where they live, with suspension as the consequence of that evidence not appearing within a reasonable time.
Against all that, the offer is a two-letter address with a strong second meaning, a registry with thirty years of continuous operation behind it, and a price among the highest we charge for anything. Charities and community groups serving the islands get a better deal: a .org.gg is free to a qualifying not-for-profit that actually uses it.
Who is allowed to register .gg?

- Who may register
- No residency, nationality or Channel Islands connection is needed. Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis, and remain provisional and open to review for the three working days after the registry receives them.
- Commercial sites must identify themselves
- Where a .gg address is used for a website with a commercial purpose, the terms make it a Condition that the site publishes, reasonably prominently, at minimum what English law requires of a UK commercial site: company name, postal and email address, registration number, place of incorporation, a non-electronic contact route, and any trade or professional bodies you are a member of.
- Your details must stay accurate
- You must tell the registry within seven days if your registration information changes. Where information looks inaccurate the registry gives notice and seven days to correct it, after which it may suspend the domain and then cancel the registration.
- Proof of identity on request
- Under the registrant identification policy the registry can ask your registrar to evidence the identity and address of the registrant or any authorised contact. Registrars are not required to check documents up front, but they must be able to produce that evidence within a reasonable time or the domain may be suspended.
- Names that embarrass the islands
- The registry may refuse an application or cancel an existing registration where it reasonably appears that the name, in the hands of the registrant for the time being, is being used or is likely to be used in a way that could damage the reputation of the Channel Islands. Reasonable notice, independent review and an appeal are provided for.

Is .gg the right choice for you?

Look elsewhere if

.gg vs .com: which should you register?
For a gaming or esports brand this is the live comparison, and it turns on how much the second meaning is worth to you. "GG" is understood without explanation by the audience these brands are chasing. A .com is understood without explanation by everybody.
What .gg costs you beyond the price: the commercial disclosure Condition described above, a registry that can ask for proof of identity, and a name most people outside gaming will need to hear twice. What .gg buys you is two letters, instant recognition inside one very specific culture, and availability on names that went from .com two decades ago.
Note the practical difference too. A .com transfer is a standard authorisation code process through an ICANN-accredited registrar. A .gg is handled by a small independent registry with its own contract terms and its own rules, which is not a problem, but it is a different set of paperwork to read.

It may also suspend a domain where registration information is materially inaccurate and not corrected within seven days of notice, or where a request for evidence of the registrant identity goes unanswered.
It is a small independent registry serving a jurisdiction of a few tens of thousands of people, with none of the volume that lets Nominet or VeriSign price low, plus demand from gaming brands that will pay for two letters. There is no technical difference under the hood. Since the price recurs annually, work out what a decade of it looks like before you commit, and remember a .co.uk renewal is a small fraction of the same figure.
