Why WHOIS often cannot find a .uk.com domain
A .uk.com domain is neither a top-level domain nor a country-code domain. uk.com is one ordinary registration inside the .com zone that Verisign runs, and a private registry subdivides it and sells the level below. Everything odd about the extension follows from that, so it is worth getting clear before you buy.
The paperwork names three parties. 8 Inc. publishes the registry policies, CentralNic Ltd provides the technical registry, and Gen.xyz handles support and abuse reports. There are no eligibility restrictions, terms run from one to ten years, and a holder has 14 days to answer a registry request to confirm contact details before the name can be suspended. The contract is governed by the law of Nevada, with disputes going to individual arbitration or the courts of Clark County. For a domain sold on being British, that is a thing to know.
The other consequence is technical. Ask an ordinary WHOIS or RDAP tool about a .uk.com and it follows the .com bootstrap to Verisign, which holds no record below uk.com and answers "No match". The real record sits on the CentralNic WHOIS server instead.

Look elsewhere if
- You want it to help you rank in Britain. It lives inside .com, which Google treats as generic, so there is no country signal in it at all.
- The annual cost matters. It runs close to three times a .co.uk every year, for something that is technically a name below somebody else's registration.
- You assume UK consumer law or the Nominet dispute service applies. The contract points at Nevada law and individual arbitration, and Nominet has no role in it whatsoever.

A .co.uk is a real country-code domain, run by Nominet, and it is what a British customer expects to see. Google reads it as a UK site. It costs a fraction of a .uk.com with us, it transfers almost instantly because a .uk transfer is an IPS tag change rather than a multi-day process, and a UK individual gets privacy on the public record at no charge. On every measure with a right answer, the .co.uk takes it.
What .uk.com has is names. The word you wanted probably went from .co.uk fifteen years ago and may well still be free here, and for some brands that is worth paying for. Just register it knowing you are buying availability rather than authority, and that nothing about the address is officially British.

The Nominet rules list .co.uk and .org.uk as open second levels with no restriction on the status of the applicant, so a person or a company anywhere in the world can hold one. There is no residency test and no Companies House requirement. Those rules do exist elsewhere in the .uk namespace, on .ltd.uk and .plc.uk, which are limited to companies on the Register of Companies.
Because most lookup tools ask the wrong server. RDAP and WHOIS route a query by its top-level domain, so a .uk.com name goes to Verisign, which runs .com and holds no record of anything registered below uk.com. It answers "No match", which reads like the domain is free. The record does exist, on the CentralNic WHOIS server that serves the uk.com registry. Our own WHOIS tool handles this case; several of the big public ones still do not.
No. The registry states on its own site that it operates independently and has no affiliation with the UK government, with .uk, or with .com. Nominet, which runs the actual .uk country-code domain, has nothing to do with it. That is not a criticism of the service, which has run for decades and holds plenty of established sites, but a customer who reads UK in the address and assumes a British registry is assuming something that was never claimed.
