What is a .storage domain?
The .storage domain serves two distinct markets. Self-storage facilities and removals companies use it for their physical storage services. Cloud storage providers and backup platforms use it for digital storage. Both audiences search with the same word, making .storage an efficient domain for either sector.
Who should register .storage?

What a .storage domain really costs to keep
Almost everything about .storage is ordinary except the price, and the price changes the whole decision. This is not an extension that costs a few pounds more than a .co.uk. It costs hundreds of pounds a year, every year, and it renews at that level for as long as you hold it. Before anything else about branding, work out what that figure buys against the same money spent on local search advertising, because for most UK self-storage operators the advertising wins.
The registry frames the extension itself plainly enough. XYZ, which took it over from Self Storage Company LLC after the December 2015 delegation, describes .storage as an unrestricted, generic extension. There is no facility to evidence, no trade body to belong to and no location requirement.
Where it makes sense is a national or multi-site operator with the marketing budget to make an unusual address familiar, or a technology company whose product is storage and whose audience will read the word as a category rather than a shed. A single-site facility in a market town is better served elsewhere.
Is .storage the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.storage works well if
- You are a multi-site or national storage operator with a marketing budget large enough to make an unfamiliar address familiar to customers.
- Your product is digital storage or backup, and an audience of technical buyers will read the extension as a category rather than a physical unit.
- The exact name you want exists here and nowhere else, and the annual fee is small against what the name is worth to the business.
Look elsewhere if
- You run one or two sites locally. A .co.uk costs a small fraction of this every year and does more for local search results.
- You would be paying a three-figure sum annually for something a customer types once and then bookmarks. That money buys a lot of local advertising instead.
- You may sell or wind up the business within a few years. This is a long-term commitment priced as one, and the renewal does not get cheaper.
Running a local storage or removals firm? A .co.uk costs a small fraction of this and works harder in UK results. See .co.uk pricing.
.storage vs .co.uk: which should you register?
Cost is the whole argument here, and it is not a close one. A .co.uk is priced so that renewing it is a rounding error in a small firm's accounts, and Google treats it as a UK site by default, which matters enormously for a business whose customers are searching for storage within a few miles of home.
A .storage gives you a descriptive word in the address and asks for a large annual fee in exchange. That trade only makes sense at a scale where brand recall across many locations is worth paying for. For everyone else, register the .co.uk, put the word storage in your page titles where Google will actually read it, and spend the difference on being visible in local results.
.storage domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .storage domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyThe registry sets a high wholesale price and every registrar passes it on, so there is no cheaper source to shop around for. It reflects a deliberate positioning decision by the operator rather than any technical difference: DNS resolution, DNSSEC and record types are identical to a .co.uk. Check the annual figure on this page against a .co.uk before you commit, and remember it recurs every year for the life of the business.
No. The registry describes it as unrestricted and generic, so anyone anywhere can register one with no facility to evidence and no trade membership to prove. That means a self-storage operator, a cloud backup provider and a furniture removals firm all register on identical terms. It also means the extension itself is not evidence that the site behind it is a real storage business.
Usually no, and we would rather say so than take the order. A single-site facility competes for local searches, where a .co.uk carries a UK signal that this extension does not, at a small fraction of the annual cost. Put the money into being found in local results and on maps. Revisit .storage if you grow to several sites and brand recall starts to matter more than the fee.
