What is a .cheap domain?
The .cheap domain is unapologetic about price. Budget airlines, discount furniture outlets, and price comparison tools all compete in a market where cost wins. A .cheap domain sets expectations before the page loads. Customers arrive already knowing they'll find the lowest prices.
Who should register .cheap?
Budget retailers, price comparison sites, discount travel providers, and wholesale suppliers.

What a .cheap domain says about your prices
There is an irony here worth pointing out before anything else: this is one of the dearer endings in its group, running to more than three times a .co.uk every year. An address that announces low prices is not itself a low price, and that gap is a fair summary of what the extension does and does not do for you.
What it does well is set an expectation in one word. Somebody clicking a .cheap link knows what sort of site is coming, and that filters out visitors who were never going to buy on price. For a comparison tool, a clearance outlet or a wholesale supplier, that is useful.
What it also does, and this is the part that gets skipped, is set a ceiling. In English, cheap carries a second meaning about quality that discount and value do not, and you cannot take that back once a customer has read the address. It is a difficult word to grow out of. If there is any chance the business will move upmarket, the address will have to change with it, and changing a domain costs more than choosing a different one now.
Is .cheap the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.cheap works well if
- Price is the entire proposition and you are happy to say so, as a clearance outlet, wholesaler or comparison tool.
- You want a landing page for a price-led campaign that is separate from a main brand which cannot be seen to compete on cost.
- Your buyers are looking for the lowest number and nothing else, so an address that says exactly that saves everyone time.
Look elsewhere if
- The word cheap means low quality as well as low price in English, and you will be arguing with that meaning for as long as you use it.
- You may move upmarket later. An address built on the cheapest position is the hardest one to grow out of without starting again.
- You were told the keyword helps you rank for price searches. It does not, and it costs more than three times a .co.uk a year to find out.
Want the price message without the quality implication? A .deals or a .shop says it more neutrally. See .shop pricing.
.cheap vs .shop: which should you register?
A .shop tells people what the site is; a .cheap tells them what to expect to pay. The first is neutral and will still fit if the range changes, the second is a commitment. On price the two are close enough that cost should not decide it.
Choose .cheap only if competing on price is the strategy rather than the current situation, because the address will outlive the pricing. For most retailers the sensible arrangement is a neutral main address and a price-led one for campaigns, sale pages and paid traffic, pointing back at the same shop. That way the promise sits on a landing page you can retire, rather than on the domain in every invoice, every email signature and every printed catalogue.
.cheap domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .cheap domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyIt puts the wrong customers off, which is the point, and occasionally the right ones too, which is the risk. Shoppers hunting the lowest price respond well to it. Shoppers weighing quality read cheap as a warning rather than a promise, because in English the word covers both meanings. If your margins depend on people trusting the product as well as the price, that ambiguity works against you every day. Test the wording in an ad before you commit it to a domain.
More than three times a .co.uk every year, which surprises people given the word. The price on this page is the annual registration, exclusive of VAT, and it renews at a comparable rate rather than jumping after a first-year discount. Multiply it by the number of years you expect to trade before deciding. If the point of the site is to demonstrate that you are the cheapest option in your market, paying a premium for the address is a detail worth being aware of.
No, and this is worth being blunt about because it is the reason most people consider the extension. Google published its position in July 2015 and has not moved from it: new generic extensions are treated like .com and .org, and keywords in an extension give no ranking advantage or disadvantage. Price-led searches are won by pages that actually list current prices, load quickly and carry enough authority to be trusted. The extension can make an address memorable, and that is all it does.
