What is a .bid domain?
The .bid domain is compact and direct. At just three letters, it's one of the shortest e-commerce extensions available. Freelance marketplaces, tender platforms, and auction sites all find a home here. The word "bid" crosses industries: construction tenders, eBay-style auctions, procurement portals.

The registry behind .bid, and why it matters
Worth knowing who you are buying from. The extension is held by dot Bid Limited, a Gibraltar company, and operated by Global Registry Services, which describes itself as running sixteen registries: alongside .bid, that portfolio includes .win, .loan, .download, .stream, .party, .science, .faith, .racing and .webcam. Those endings are cheap, easy to obtain in bulk, and have spent a decade being treated warily by spam filters and reputation systems because of it. Guilt by association is not fair, but it is how filtering works, and it is the risk you take on with the address.
The word itself is good. Three letters, hard to mistype, and it crosses industries: an auction, a construction tender, a procurement portal and a freelance marketplace all use it. GRS also states that its premium names carry no premium renewal rate, which is a better arrangement than several larger registries offer.
Delegated in February 2014, .bid has been technically operated by GoDaddy Registry since the back-end moved. There are no eligibility rules of any kind.
Is .bid the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.bid works well if
- You run a tender or procurement platform where the whole product is one word, and yourname.bid says it in three letters.
- You need a short address for print or signage, and the ending is one of the few that never gets spelled out on the phone.
- The site does not depend on sending outbound email to strangers, so an unfamiliar ending costs you nothing at the inbox.
Look elsewhere if
- Cold outreach or transactional email is central to the business. Starting on an ending with a difficult neighbourhood is an avoidable handicap.
- You expect it to be cheap because it is short. It costs close to three times a .co.uk each year, which surprises people.
- Your customers are consumers who need to feel safe entering card details. Familiarity is worth more than brevity at a checkout.
Selling to UK buyers who need to trust the checkout? A .co.uk is the safer address and costs a third as much. See .co.uk pricing.
.bid vs .auction: which should you register?
The longer word is unambiguous and the short one is versatile. A .auction can only be read one way, which is helpful for a saleroom and limiting for anything else. A .bid stretches across auctions, tenders, procurement and freelance marketplaces, and fits on a sign.
Where they part company is reputation. The .auction extension sits in the Identity Digital portfolio with the ordinary spread of businesses on it, while .bid sits alongside a group of endings that have historically attracted bulk registration and the filtering that follows. If your business sends email to people who have not heard of you, that difference is worth more than three letters of brevity. If it does not, take the shorter word.
.bid domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .bid domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyThe IANA root database records dot Bid Limited, a company registered in Gibraltar, as the sponsoring organisation, with GoDaddy Registry as the technical contact. Day-to-day operation is by Global Registry Services, which says on its own site that it coordinates sixteen registries including .win, .loan, .download and .science. Knowing that matters because a registry's portfolio shapes how the extension is perceived by mail providers and security vendors, which is a practical consideration rather than a theoretical one.
It can make a hard job harder, though it is not the deciding factor. Reputation systems weigh the sending domain, its age, its authentication and the behaviour of the network it sits in, and a brand new domain on an ending associated with bulk registration starts with less benefit of the doubt than an established .co.uk. The fix is the same either way: set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC properly, warm the domain gradually, and keep list hygiene tight. If cold email is core to the business, use a conventional domain for sending.
It reads well for that use, better than for consumer auctions, because bid is the word the industry actually uses for a submission. The counterweight is that construction procurement is relationship-led and document-heavy, so your address turns up in email threads and PDFs sent to people who are cautious by profession. Test it: send a document from the address to a few contacts before you commit, and check it arrives in the inbox rather than the junk folder on the platforms your clients use.
