Why .solar is a signal, not an installer credential
Solar is a sector where the customer has usually been sold to badly at least once before you knock. That shapes how a .solar address is received: to some homeowners it reads as specialism, and to others, particularly older ones who remember doorstep energy selling, an unfamiliar extension reads as a company that has not been around long. Both reactions are real, and which one you get depends more on the word in front of the dot than on the extension itself.
What the extension cannot do is vouch for you. Nothing is checked at the point of order. IANA delegated .solar on 19 December 2013 to Ruby Town, LLC, and it moved to Binky Moon in the bulk transfer recorded on 23 March 2018; the ICANN agreement, signed on 7 November 2013, is Base and Non-Sponsored, which is the class with no community body vetting registrations. There is no accreditation test, no trade membership requirement and no proof of competence.
The credential UK buyers actually look for sits elsewhere. MCS runs the certification scheme for small-scale renewables and publishes a public installer directory, and a homeowner comparing three quotes is far more likely to check that, your Companies House record and your reviews than to think about your domain at all.
Which leaves .solar doing what a keyword extension does honestly well: it makes a long company name shorter, it explains the business in the address, and it survives being read out over a garden fence. Those are worth something. They are not worth confusing with certification.

.solar vs .energy: which should you register?
Same registry, same rules, different width. Binky Moon runs both. .solar reached the root zone on 19 December 2013 and .energy on 16 October 2014, and .energy is the dearer of the two by roughly half as much again.
.solar is a claim of specialism. It suits an installer, a panel manufacturer or a farm operator whose entire business is photovoltaics, and it stops being accurate the day you add heat pumps and battery storage to the quote sheet. .energy covers the lot, which is why it appeals to firms that started in solar and have grown sideways into retrofit work.
The practical test is your quote sheet in five years rather than today. If it will still say solar at the top, take the narrower word. If you already suspect it will say something broader, do not buy an address you will have to retire.
