What is a .shopping domain?

The .shopping domain describes an activity, not just a product. Shopping centres, comparison platforms, and curated product directories benefit from a domain that frames the visit as a browsing experience. Customers clicking a .shopping link expect variety, choice, and a reason to explore.

Who should register .shopping?

Shopping centres, product comparison platforms, curated retail directories, and affiliate shopping guides.

The longer answer

The length problem with a .shopping domain name

Count the characters before you fall for it. Shopping is eight letters, which makes .shopping the longest of the common retail extensions, and every one of those letters sits in front of your customer each time they read the address. bestdeals.shopping is nineteen characters. The same name on .shop is fourteen. That difference shows up on packaging, on a business card, and in the seconds it takes to dictate over the phone.

What you get back is a word that describes an activity rather than a shopfront. A price comparison site, a curated gift guide, a shopping centre's visitor site or an affiliate directory are all doing shopping without being a shop, and the extension fits that gap better than any singular retail word manages.

It also arrived late. IANA has .shopping entering the root zone on 8 June 2016, delegated to Over Keep, LLC and moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 consolidation. By then .shop had launched under GMO Registry a month earlier, and .store had arrived that February under Radix, so .shopping came third into a category with two better-known answers already in it. Availability is the upside of that: names taken on .shop are often still free here.

Our steer is to treat .shopping as a name for a project with browsing at its centre. If you run one shop selling your own products, the shorter extensions describe you better and cost you fewer keystrokes for the whole life of the business.

The honest answer

Is .shopping the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.shopping works well if

  • You run a comparison site, a gift guide or a curated directory, where the visitor browses across sellers rather than buying from one.
  • You market a shopping centre, retail park or high street association and need an address for visitors rather than for a single trader.
  • The name you want has gone on .shop and .store, and you would rather have the exact word than pad it out.
  • Your site is somewhere people return to for ideas, so a word describing the activity fits better than one describing a till.

Look elsewhere if

  • Every character counts for you. At eight letters .shopping makes a long address on packaging, receipts and anywhere it has to be read aloud.
  • You sell your own products from one shop. .shop and .store say that in fewer letters and are better recognised by shoppers.
  • Your customers are UK consumers searching locally, where a .co.uk gives Google a country signal that no generic extension does.

Selling your own products from a single shop? The shorter .shop describes you better and takes fewer keystrokes. See .shop pricing.

Head to head

.shopping vs .shop: which should you register?

This is the comparison that decides it for most buyers, and length is only half of it. .shop is run by GMO Registry in Tokyo and reached the root zone on 5 May 2016, a month before .shopping. It caught on faster, so recognition is higher and availability is lower.

.shop is the better default for a retailer selling their own goods: shorter, blunter, understood without a beat of thought. .shopping earns its place when the site is not a shop at all, which covers comparison engines, editorial gift guides, centre and retail park sites, and affiliate catalogues.

Test it by finishing this sentence out loud: my website is name dot shopping. If that sounds like a mouthful, you have your answer, because your customers will be saying it far more often than you will.

.shopping domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .shopping domain.

No, and the two have nothing to do with each other. Google Shopping is a product listing service inside Google Search. .shopping is a top-level domain operated by Identity Digital and delegated in June 2016. Owning a .shopping domain gives you no standing in Google Shopping, no free listings and no advantage in the product results. Getting into those listings means submitting a product feed through Google Merchant Center, which works identically whatever extension your site runs on.

Anyone, in any country. There is no retail licence to hold, no company number to supply and no check that you sell anything at all. The registry applies its acceptable use policy for the life of the domain, and that covers abuse and inaccurate registration data rather than what sector you trade in. A charity running a fundraising gift guide registers on exactly the same terms as a national retailer.

It is the longest of the common retail extensions, at eight letters, and that is a real cost rather than a cosmetic one. Every printed reference, every spoken reference and every line of packaging carries those eight characters for the life of the business. It is worth accepting when the name in front of the dot is short and the word describes what the site does. It is harder to justify when that name is already long, because the full address then becomes something people copy and paste rather than remember.

No. Google treats new generic extensions the same way it treats .com and .org, so having the word shopping after the dot carries no ranking weight. What it can do is make your result look more relevant in a list, which affects clicks rather than position. For UK visibility the more useful signal is a .co.uk, which Google reads as pointing at one country in a way that no generic extension does.
