What is a .plumbing domain?

The .plumbing domain was one of the first trade-specific TLDs, and it remains a solid choice for plumbers, heating engineers, and plumbing supply companies. When a customer has a burst pipe, a .plumbing domain leaves no doubt about what you do.

Who should register .plumbing?

Plumbers, heating engineers, gas fitters, and plumbing supply merchants.

What .plumbing does not prove to an emergency caller

The pitch for a trade extension is that a customer with water coming through a ceiling will find you faster. It is a good story with very little behind it. Somebody with a burst pipe reaches for a phone, taps the map, and rings the first business showing reviews and an open sign. Nothing in that sequence involves typing a domain at all.

So what is .plumbing actually for? Recognition on the surfaces that are not search results. Van livery, a sticker on a boiler casing, a magnet in a kitchen drawer, a card in a landlord's file. An address naming the trade is easier to hold on to a year later than a hyphenated one, and a year later is exactly when most domestic plumbing work gets booked.

What it cannot do is stand in for a credential. Gas work in Britain is legally restricted: the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require anyone carrying out work on a gas fitting to belong to a class of persons approved by the Health and Safety Executive, which is what the Gas Safe Register is. The registry checks none of that, and Identity Digital's acceptable use policy specifically covers holding yourself out as having a status or authorisation you do not hold. Put the registration number on the site and on the van; the domain is an address, nothing more.

Price is the honest sticking point. .plumbing is one of the dearer extensions in this category, close to six times a .co.uk each year, and the businesses it is aimed at are frequently one person and a van. It entered the root zone on 8 November 2013 under Spring Tigers, LLC, on a Base, Non-Sponsored ICANN contract signed that September, and moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 transfer of 196 extensions. None of that history makes the annual bill any smaller.

Overall, our systems treat new gTLDs like other gTLDs (like .com and .org). Keywords in a TLD do not give any advantage or disadvantage in search.

What that means if you are buying one

Google now flags that post as old, and its current guidance on multi-regional sites says the same thing in different words: generic extensions are not associated with any location, while a country code extension signals which country a site is for. For a plumber that settles it. The word in your address wins you nothing in the results, and the .co.uk you did not buy would have said something.

The honest answer

Is .plumbing the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.plumbing works well if

  • You want the trade named in the address on a van, a boiler sticker and a business card, where a customer reads it months after the job.
  • You supply plumbing merchants or the trade nationally, so a country signal matters less to you than the word does.
  • Your company name plus plumbing is already how customers describe you when they ring.
  • The .co.uk versions of your name went years ago, and what is left needs a hyphen or a filler word to make any sense.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are hoping it helps with emergency searches. It does not: those come from the map results, driven by your Business Profile, reviews and opening hours.
  • It is one of the dearer extensions in this category, close to six times a .co.uk each year, which is a lot for a one van business.
  • You do bathrooms, heating and general maintenance as well. The word ties your address to the part of the work with the lowest average ticket.

Head to head

.plumbing vs .repair: which should you register?

This is not a comparison plumbers usually make, and it is the one worth making. Most domestic plumbing revenue is repair work: a leak, a failed valve, a boiler that has stopped in February. .repair describes that directly, stretches to heating and appliances alongside it, and costs a good deal less each year.

.plumbing is the better fit if you install as much as you fix, or if you supply the trade, because the word covers the whole discipline. .repair is the better fit for a call out business, and it does not corner you the day you start taking on appliances or heating controls.

Same registry, six weeks apart in the root zone, the same open registration rules. What separates them is what the word admits about how you actually earn a living.

.plumbing domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .plumbing domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

No, and it must never be presented as if it does. Gas work in Britain is restricted by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, which require anyone working on a gas fitting to belong to a class of persons approved by the Health and Safety Executive. Nothing of the sort is checked at registration, and Identity Digital's acceptable use policy specifically covers holding yourself out as having a credential you do not hold. Publish the registration number and treat the domain as an address.

No. Emergency plumbing work is booked from the map results on a phone, which are driven by your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your opening hours and how close you are. Google has stated that keywords in a top level domain give no advantage or disadvantage in search, and a generic extension gives no country signal either. If emergency work is the goal, spend the money on completing the Business Profile and getting reviews in, then buy a cheap .co.uk.

Anyone in any country. No trade card, qualification, company number or insurance certificate is checked at the point of order, because the ICANN agreement behind .plumbing is Base and Non-Sponsored, the class with no community body deciding who qualifies. A merchant, a manufacturer or somebody with no connection to the trade at all can register one on the same terms as a working plumber. The registry can act afterwards over abuse or inaccurate registration details.

For most domestic plumbers, no. The extension does nothing for search, nothing for credibility that a Gas Safe number does not do better, and the annual gap adds up to several hundred pounds across a working life. It earns its money in one situation: where the address goes on vehicles and printed material read by strangers, and the word saves an explanation every time. If that is not your business, buy the .co.uk and put the difference into photographs of finished work.

Your domain comes with a real 10 GB mailbox. Signing what you send is the part that happens on a mail server rather than in DNS.

  • SPF

    Free with your domain

    Sender Policy Framework. A DNS record naming the servers allowed to send mail for your domain. It vouches for the connection rather than the message, so it stops verifying as soon as anyone forwards what you sent.

  • DKIM

    Needs a mail server that signs

    DomainKeys Identified Mail. Your mail server signs every message on the way out, and the receiving server checks that signature against a key in your DNS. It covers the message itself, so it survives a forward where SPF cannot.

    DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed;
      d=yourdomain.co.uk; s=default; t=1790160000;
      h=from:to:subject:date:message-id;
      bh=2jUSOH9NhtVGCQWNr9BrIAPreKQjO6Sn7XIkfJVOzv8=;
      b=NpX0k2f1oW8tR6yQzLm4cVb7JhTdEu...
    The header a signing mail server adds. d= is your domain and b= is the signature proving the message came from it. A domain on its own has no server to write that header.
  • DMARC

    Meaningful once DKIM is in place

    Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance. The policy telling a receiving server what to do with mail that fails those checks, and where to send the reports. It only bites once SPF or DKIM lines up with the address you send from.
