Why .org.im is a convention, not a charity check
Nothing about an .org.im domain proves you are a charity. The .im rules are explicit that the registry will not restrict who applies or which names they may hold, and there is no charity number check anywhere in the process. The same goes for .org.uk: Nominet lists it as an open second level, describes its not-for-profit purpose as an assumption rather than a rule, and states outright that it takes no action over registrations that do not match.
So the org label is a convention that readers still respond to, which is worth something, but it is a signal you are handing yourself. What reassures a donor sits on the page rather than in the address bar: a registered charity number, named trustees, a real postal address, published accounts. Get those right and the extension matters a good deal less than whoever is selling you the domain will admit.
Where .org.im does earn its keep is locality. A Manx heritage group, sports club or community association with an Isle of Man address is saying something true and specific, and a .org.uk would be saying something slightly wrong.

- Every application runs against a prohibited word list, a list of reserved names, and a referral list that the registry says includes words connected to regulated activities on the Isle of Man. None of those lists is public, and they can change without notice.
- Government withdrawal
- The Isle of Man Government can withdraw a name within two working days of the application, and can require suspension or withdrawal later in the national interest, or where it considers the name is being used improperly or in a way detrimental to the good name of the Island.
- If your application is refused
- You have 10 days from the rejection notice to appeal to the Designated Official, and that decision is final. A fee taken on a name which is then rejected is refunded within 30 days, so a refused application costs you time rather than money.
