The .net.im domain is the network-focused extension for the Isle of Man. Where .net.im sits in the Isle of Man namespace
The Isle of Man sells more of its namespace than most registries do. The .im order form lists nine endings you can apply for: .im itself, .co.im, .com.im, .net.im, .org.im, .ac.im, .gov.im, .ltd.co.im and .plc.co.im, with restrictions on some of them. .net.im is the network flavour of that set, and like the rest of it, applications are taken first come, first served with no test of who you are.
Three things the registry publishes that most resellers never mention. Some third-level names were issued years ago and remain valid, so the matching names are held back as reserved domains and cannot be bought at any price. Renewal warnings go out 60, 30, 5 and 1 day before expiry, after which the name is removed from the .im name servers and becomes available to anyone once a month has passed. And moving a .im away from the registry to another registrar deletes the NS, A, CNAME and MX records held on the registry name servers, so arrange your DNS elsewhere before you start the transfer rather than after it.
Who is allowed to register .net.im?
The Isle of Man registry does not check who you are, but it screens the name before registration and the Island government can withdraw one later.
- No registrant test
- The rules say the registry will not restrict who may apply for a domain, which names you may hold, or how many. No Manx address, no company number, nothing to prove. A design studio in Leeds can hold a .net.im.
- Reserved and pre-registered names
- Third-level names issued in the past stay valid, and the registry keeps the corresponding names out of general sale as reserved domains. A name that shows as unavailable with no record behind it is usually one of those, or one on the prohibited word list.
- Format limits
- Letters a to z, digits 0 to 9 and hyphens, with no hyphen at the start or the end. Internationalised names starting xn-- are not offered, and the whole domain must run to between 3 and 64 characters including the .im ending.
- Withdrawal after registration
- The Isle of Man Government keeps the right to withdraw a name within two working days of the application, and to suspend or withdraw one at any later date in the national interest or where the name is used for an improper purpose. A rejection can be appealed within 10 days and the Designated Official decision on that appeal is final.

Look elsewhere if
- Your customers are in Britain. Google reads a .co.uk as a UK site and it costs a fraction of this every year, which is hard to argue with.
- Nobody outside the industry reads net as meaning anything. To most visitors .net.im is a longer address with one more dot to get wrong.
- You want a purchase rather than an application. The registry can refuse a name at order and the Island government can withdraw one later, so this is approved rather than bought.

.net.im vs .co.im: which should you register?
.co.im is the general-purpose Manx third level and the one people guess at first. .net.im carries a hint that you deal in networks or infrastructure, which nobody enforces and most visitors will not read into it at all.
In practice the difference is availability rather than meaning. If your name is free under .co.im, take that. Reach for .net.im when the .im and the .co.im have both gone and the network reading happens to suit what you do. The two cost the same with us, and both cost more than the shorter .im that sits above them.

Ask us directlyNo. Nominet restricts .net.uk to ISPs and makes applicants prove it, down to being listed as a local IP address registry or running an autonomous system reachable from the major exchange points. The Isle of Man registry imposes nothing of the kind. Applications are taken first come, first served and nobody asks what you do, so the network association on .net.im is a convention rather than a condition.
You lose it faster than you might expect. The registry emails the nominated contacts 60 days, 30 days, 5 days and 1 day before expiry, then sends a final notice, at which point the name is removed from the .im name servers and the site and email stop. Once a month has passed from that point anyone at all can register it. Set your own reminder rather than relying on the registry emails reaching a mailbox somebody still reads.
The current holder unlocks the domain in the registry system and hands over the authorisation code shown on its details page, then the gaining registrar starts the transfer. One warning worth taking seriously: moving a .im away from the registry deletes the NS, A, CNAME and MX records held on the registry name servers, so set up DNS at the new provider first. This is nothing like a .uk transfer, which is an IPS tag change and near instant.
