What is a .market domain?
The .market domain works for farmers' markets, online marketplaces, and market research firms alike. The word "market" is broad enough to span e-commerce platforms, local produce markets, and financial markets. It carries commercial energy without locking you into a single niche.
Who should register .market?
Online marketplaces, farmers' market organisers, market research firms, and commodity traders.

What a .market domain says, and where it blurs
Of the extensions in this category, .market has the widest spread of meanings, and that is both the argument for it and the argument against. A farmers' market, a stock market, a market research consultancy and a two-sided online marketplace share a word and almost nothing else. An address ending .market tells a first-time visitor that something is being bought and sold. It does not tell them what.
It also came into Identity Digital by a different route from its neighbours. IANA's delegation record shows .market entering the root zone on 22 May 2014 under United TLD Holdco, Ltd, then transferring to Dog Beach, LLC on 2 June 2021. The other extensions in this category sit under Binky Moon, LLC, most of them moved there in one March 2018 transfer covering 196 extensions at once. None of that changes how you register or renew, but it explains why the registry name in the facts grid above differs from its neighbours.
Where it works is as a second address rather than a first. If a business already trades on a .co.uk and is launching a marketplace, a trade directory or a members' area, something.market gives that project a name of its own without inventing a new brand. Where it works less well is as the only address a business owns, because the word does most of the heavy lifting and the word is vague.
Registry pricing matters here too. Identity Digital holds back a set of premium names across its extensions, so a short single-word .market may quote its own price rather than the standard one listed on this page.
Is .market the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.market works well if
- You are launching a marketplace or trade directory alongside an existing business and want it to have a name of its own rather than a subfolder.
- Your brand name has gone on .com and .co.uk, and pairing it with the word market makes a phrase that reads properly.
- You run a physical market, a farm shop collective or a monthly traders event, where the word describes the thing exactly.
- You want an address that works for buyers and sellers at once, without picking a side the way .shop or .supplies does.
Look elsewhere if
- You need the address to explain the business on its own. Market covers produce stalls, share dealing and survey firms, so it explains very little.
- You sell to UK consumers who search locally. A .co.uk carries a UK signal in Google that a generic extension like .market does not.
- The annual cost matters. A .market renews at several times the price of a .co.uk, every year, for as long as you keep it.
Trading with UK consumers rather than running a marketplace? The .co.uk costs less and does more for local search. See .co.uk pricing.
.market vs .shop: which should you register?
These two get shortlisted together and they are not the same offer. .shop is run by GMO Registry in Tokyo and entered the root zone on 5 May 2016. .market arrived two years earlier and reads as the place where trade happens rather than the till where it completes.
Pick .shop if you sell your own products directly and want no ambiguity at all about what the site is. Pick .market if several sellers or several categories sit under one roof, or if the word market is already part of how you describe yourself.
Say both out loud before deciding. Shop is one syllable and nobody mishears it. Market is two, and people say markets out of habit, which is not the address you bought.
| .market | .shop | |
|---|---|---|
| Registry | Dog Beach, LLC (Identity Digital) | GMO Registry, Tokyo |
| In the root zone since | 22 May 2014 | 5 May 2016 |
| What it implies | Many sellers or many categories | One retailer, own products |
| Said aloud | Two syllables, plural often slips in | One syllable, rarely misheard |
| Annual cost | Several times a .co.uk | Mid range |
.market domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .market domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyAnyone, anywhere. There is no requirement to run a market, hold a trading licence or be based in any particular country, and no documents are checked at the point of order. The one condition that runs for the life of the registration is Identity Digital's acceptable use policy, which lets the registry suspend or cancel a domain over abuse or over registration details it finds to be inaccurate. Keep the contact record on your domain current and that never becomes an issue.
It is neutral. Google treats .market as a generic top-level domain, the same class as .com and .org, so the keyword in the extension buys no ranking advantage and carries no penalty either. What it cannot give you is the country signal a .co.uk carries. Google's own documentation splits domains into country-code extensions, which point at one country, and generic ones, which point nowhere in particular. If most of your customers search from the UK, that difference is the strongest argument for buying the .co.uk as well.
The registry sets the wholesale price, and Identity Digital prices its descriptive extensions well above what Nominet charges for a .co.uk. You are paying for the word rather than for anything technical: DNS resolution, DNSSEC support and the record types you can publish are identical on both. Check the annual figure on this page against a .co.uk before you commit, and remember it recurs for as long as the business exists. Some short single-word .market names are also held back as premium registrations at a separate price.
It fits that use better than most. A local produce market is exactly what the word describes, so the address reads as a plain description rather than a marketing choice, which helps on a banner or read out on local radio. The caution is search: people looking for a market in your town will type the town name, and a .co.uk gives Google a UK signal that .market does not. Plenty of organisers register both and point one at the other.
