What is a .lighting domain?
The .lighting domain serves the lighting industry from every angle. Lighting designers, commercial lighting suppliers, smart home lighting companies, and architectural lighting consultants all share an industry that's become increasingly technical. A .lighting domain positions your business as a specialist rather than a generalist electrical supplier.

Why .lighting costs less than half of .plumbing
Two extensions in this category came out of the same registry eight days apart in autumn 2013, on the same class of ICANN contract, doing an identical technical job. One of them, .lighting, is among the cheapest here. The other, .plumbing, costs more than twice as much. Nothing about DNS explains that. Registry pricing reflects what an operator believes a word is worth to the trade that wants it, which is worth knowing before you read any extension as a mark of quality.
The market it serves has changed more than most since then. Lighting has split into specialisms that barely overlap: architectural and specification work, retail decorative, commercial LED retrofit, stage and event hire, and smart home installation. An address ending .lighting reads as a specialist in all of them and tells a visitor which one you are in none of them, so the words in front of the dot have to do that job.
The registry record, for completeness. .lighting entered the root zone on 31 October 2013, ten days after the first four new generic extensions of the 2012 round were delegated, putting it in the opening wave of Latin script extensions from that programme. It was delegated to John McCook, LLC and moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 transfer of 196 extensions. There is no electrical qualification, trade body membership or registration to prove at any point.
Being cheap for this category is the practical argument in its favour. At around two and a half times a .co.uk it is one of the few descriptive extensions where holding it alongside your main address is an easy yes rather than a deliberation, and there is no .lights in the root zone for a customer to guess at by mistake.
Is .lighting the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.lighting works well if
- You specify or design lighting rather than sell fittings, and the address goes on drawings and schedules read by architects and contractors.
- You hire stage, event or film lighting, where clients are trade, national, and untroubled by an unfamiliar ending.
- You sell decorative or architectural fittings across Europe, so a UK extension would tell customers less than the word does.
- It is among the least expensive extensions in this category, so pairing it with an existing .co.uk costs little enough not to need a business case.
Look elsewhere if
- You are an electrician who also does lighting. The word narrows you to the part of the job with the smallest tickets on it.
- Your work comes from householders searching locally. Google treats .lighting as generic, so it contributes nothing a .co.uk would not.
- You sell fittings alongside a broad home range. The word covers the lamps and none of the mirrors, furniture or accessories next to them.
Wiring houses as well as lighting them? A .co.uk keeps the door open and costs a good deal less. See .co.uk pricing.
.lighting vs .com: which should you register?
Almost every lighting business weighing .lighting is really weighing it against a .com that has either gone or costs more than the business will pay. In an established category the two word .com went in the 2000s, so the honest comparison is a short exact .lighting against a longer .com padded with a filler word.
.com still wins on habit. It is what a browser guesses, what an older customer assumes, and what gets written down when somebody hears your address over the phone. .lighting wins on availability and on saying what you do, which counts for more on a specification sheet than in a browser.
The money is not the deciding factor. A .lighting costs about half again what a .com does each year, so this comes down to names and habits rather than budget.

.lighting domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .lighting domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. Nothing is checked at the point of order: no qualification, no trade body membership, no company registration. .lighting runs on a Base, Non-Sponsored ICANN contract, the class with no community body behind it. That means the extension proves nothing about competence to a customer, and it also means a manufacturer, a hire company or an enthusiast can hold one. Any work that legally requires certification is governed by the relevant scheme, never by a web address.
Because the registry prices each word separately, not because one is technically lesser. Both are Binky Moon extensions, delegated eight days apart in autumn 2013 on the same class of ICANN contract, and both resolve, support DNSSEC and carry mail records identically. .lighting is among the cheapest extensions in this category and .plumbing costs more than twice as much. Read the price as a market judgement about what a trade will pay for a word, not as a quality signal.
It is one of the few here where that is an easy yes. At around two and a half times a .co.uk it is one of the least expensive extensions in this category, cheap enough that holding it as a redirect or a campaign address does not need justifying. Point it at your main site, use it on printed schedules or a vehicle where the word does useful work, and keep the .co.uk as the address you publish everywhere else.
The word will, though your business may have moved past it. Lighting has already absorbed LED retrofit and smart controls, and firms that began by selling fittings now sell installation, controls and maintenance contracts. If the address is the only one you own, that drift becomes a problem: you either keep an address that undersells you, or you move a website and rebuild everything pointing at it. A neutral .co.uk held alongside costs little and removes the question.
