The .je domain is the country code for Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. Jersey has a strong financial services industry, and .je is widely used by banks, trust companies, and fund administrators based on the Island. Why .je and .gg share one rulebook
Jersey and Guernsey are separate Bailiwicks with separate legislatures, separate courts and separate laws, and their two country-code domains are run out of the same technical operation. IANA records the .je manager as Island Networks (Jersey) Ltd of St Helier, with the technical contact at Island Networks Limited in Alderney, which is where .gg is run from as well. One set of registration terms covers both, one WHOIS covers both, and channelisles.net is the registry site for the pair.
The practical effect is that everything true of a .gg registration is true of a .je one. No residency requirement and no local presence test. The same Condition that a .je site with a commercial purpose must publish its trading details prominently, at the level English law requires of a UK commercial site. The same power for the registry to demand evidence of who is behind the registration, and the same clause allowing cancellation where a name could damage the reputation of the Channel Islands.
What differs is what the address says. .gg landed a second meaning it never asked for and now sells to gamers worldwide. .je has had no such luck. Outside the Channel Islands it reads as very little, and to a French speaker it reads as the pronoun. That makes it the more literal of the two: a .je says Jersey, and it says it mainly to people who already know Jersey. For a finance, trust or fund administration business on the Island, that is precisely the point.
One thing worth repeating: charities, clubs and other not-for-profits serving at least one of the Channel Islands can hold a .org.je free, provided the domain is actively used. Everything else is charged at the standard rate, which is among the highest we charge.
Who is allowed to register .je?
Anyone worldwide may register a .je, but a commercial .je website must publish its trading details, and the registry can require evidence of who the registrant is.
- Who may register
- There is no Jersey residency requirement, no nationality test and no local presence rule. Applications are handled first come, first served and stay provisional and open to review for the three working days after the registry receives them.
- Commercial sites must identify themselves
- The registration terms make it a Condition that a .je address used for a website with a commercial purpose publishes identifying information reasonably prominently on that site: company name, postal and email address, registration number, place of incorporation, a non-electronic contact route, and any trade or professional bodies you belong to.
- Accuracy is a contractual condition
- The information you give must be correct at registration, and you must tell the registry within seven days if it changes. Where details appear inaccurate you are given notice and seven days to fix them, after which the domain may be suspended and then the registration cancelled.
- Free .org.je for good causes
- Charities, community groups, clubs and other not-for-profits qualify for a free .org.je if they serve at least one of the Channel Islands and make active use of the name. Registering directly with the registry involves a refundable card authorisation as a security check. Anything that does not end .org.je is charged at the normal rate whether or not the registrant is a not-for-profit.
- Names the registry may refuse
- The registry may refuse an application or cancel an existing registration where the name, in the hands of the registrant for the time being, is being used or appears likely to be used in a way that could damage the reputation of the Channel Islands. Reasonable notice, independent review and a right of appeal apply.

Is .je the right choice for you?

.je works well if
- You are a Jersey business and want an address that places you on the Island to local clients, professional intermediaries and regulators.
- You work in trust, fund administration or professional services, where the jurisdiction is part of what you are selling.
- You are a Channel Islands charity or community group, in which case a .org.je costs nothing provided you qualify and use it.
- You already hold the .gg and want the matching Jersey address so neither island reads as an afterthought.
Look elsewhere if
- You have no connection to Jersey. The extension says one thing only, and to most people outside the Channel Islands it says nothing at all.
- Budget matters. This is among the dearest extensions we register, several times the annual cost of a .co.uk, and it renews at that level for ever.
- You would rather not publish your company number, registered address and a non-electronic contact route on a commercial site. That publication is a Condition of the registration.

.je vs .gg: which should you register?
Same registry, same rulebook, same price, same registration terms. Everything that separates these two is about meaning and audience rather than policy, which makes this an unusually clean comparison.
.je is the more literal. It means Jersey and nothing else, which is exactly what a St Helier trust company or a Jersey retailer wants. .gg carries a second life. Gaming culture adopted it for "good game" and that demand is now what drives most registrations, so a .gg address reads as a gaming brand to a large audience who have never thought about Guernsey.
If you are an island business, register the one that matches your island and consider holding the other defensively. If you are a gaming brand, .gg is the only one of the two that does anything for you, and .je would simply confuse people.

IANA lists Island Networks (Jersey) Ltd in St Helier as the .je manager and Island Networks Ltd in Alderney as the .gg manager, and the technical contact for both is Island Networks Limited in Alderney. One set of registration terms, one WHOIS service and one registry website, channelisles.net, cover the pair. The two Bailiwicks remain legally separate, and the terms let you elect the jurisdiction of your own island for any dispute.
Qualify as a not-for-profit or good cause, such as a charity, club, society or special interest group, serve the community in at least one of the Channel Islands, and make active use of the name. Free names are limited to .org.je and .org.gg; anything else is charged at the normal rate regardless of who holds it. Registering directly with the registry involves a refundable card authorisation as a security check before the free registration is approved.
It is a small independent registry serving an island of around a hundred thousand people, without the volume that lets a large registry price low. There is no technical difference to justify the gap: the DNS, the record types and the resolution speed are the same as any other extension. Because the charge repeats every year, work out the ten-year figure before committing, and if the Jersey identity is not central to the business, a .co.uk will serve you better for a fraction of it.
