Naming a gift shop on a .gifts domain
Nobody sells gifts. They sell candles, hampers, engraved tankards, personalised prints and spa days. Gift is the word the buyer uses, not the seller, and that is the useful thing about this extension: it matches the language of the person searching rather than the language of the person stocking the shelves.
That suits a shop with no single category, which is most of them. A .gifts domain covers hampers and homeware and jewellery and vouchers without promising any one of them, and it does it in five characters. For a retailer whose honest answer to what do you sell is a bit of everything, nicely chosen, it beats bolting a category word onto a .co.uk that will be wrong within two seasons.
Novelty is not a moat, though. ICANN ran the application window for its next set of new extensions from 30 April to 12 August 2026, so more retail-flavoured endings are on their way and whatever freshness this one carries has a shelf life. Buy it because the word is right for the shop, not because it is unusual.
The harder truth is that gift retail is won on distribution rather than on addresses. Marketplaces, advertising spend, a mailing list and customers who come back decide it, and none of that changes with the ending. The extension joined the root zone on 31 July 2014 under Binky Moon, LLC, part of Identity Digital, with no retail registration required and no rules about what you may sell. At £33.99 a year it costs around three and a half times a .co.uk, and the plural is fixed, so check every printed piece carries the s.
Is .gifts the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.gifts works well if
- Your range spans several categories, so any single product word in the address would be wrong within a couple of seasons.
- You sell to people shopping by occasion rather than by product, where gifts is the word they use and search for.
- You want a separate address for a corporate or hamper arm that should not sit under the main retail brand.
- Your brand name is short, so brand plus .gifts stays comfortably readable on packaging and a swing tag.
Look elsewhere if
- Most of your trade is local and seasonal. A generic extension gives Google no country signal, where a .co.uk does.
- Gift retail is decided by distribution and repeat customers, and the address changes neither of those.
- It costs around three and a half times a .co.uk each year, and more extensions in this space are coming after ICANN's 2026 round.
Selling mainly to UK shoppers who find you through search? Put the money into the .co.uk first. See .co.uk pricing.
.gifts vs .shop: which should you register?
Both are open, both are generic, and both cost roughly the same here. The difference is whose language they use. A .shop address describes what you are, in the words a retailer uses about itself. A .gifts address describes what the customer thinks they are buying, in the words they typed into the search box.
Pick .gifts when occasion is the organising idea of the business: hampers, personalised ranges, corporate presents, anything a customer buys for somebody else. Pick .shop when the range is the point and gifting is only one reason people buy, or when you want the plainest possible statement that this address sells things.
Neither is a country-code extension, so neither does anything for a UK shop in UK search results. For a business trading mainly to British customers, the .co.uk remains the one to own, and either of these can sit alongside it as the memorable name on the packaging.

.gifts domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .gifts domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNot through us. Our catalogue carries the plural only, so any address written with the singular will fail to resolve. That makes proofreading a real job on packaging, swing tags and vehicle livery, because a missing s is a dead address rather than a near miss. If the plural worries you, register the matching .co.uk and redirect it, which costs a few pounds a year and catches people who get the ending wrong.
Not by itself. A keyword after the dot is not a ranking factor, and seasonal visibility comes from having the right pages published early, product data that is accurate, reviews, and paid placement in a period when everybody bids harder. What the extension does give you is a name people remember from a card in the parcel, which matters for repeat orders the following year. Treat it as branding rather than as a search tactic.
Probably not yet. If most of your orders arrive through a marketplace, your constraint is distribution and fees rather than your web address, and a second domain does not touch either. The point at which it starts earning is when you are driving people to your own site from inserts, social media or a mailing list, and you need a name they can retype without looking it up. Until then, one good .co.uk is enough.
