Why .garden changed hands, and what that means

Every other extension in this category is operated by Identity Digital. .garden is not, and its paperwork shows a different route in. IANA records it entering the root zone on 23 October 2014, delegated to Top Level Domain Holdings Limited, and transferred to Registry Services, LLC on 14 September 2021. Registry Services trades as GoDaddy Registry, so the company running .garden today is not the one that launched it.

None of that changes how you register, renew or transfer. It does mean the policies you agree to sit on a different site, nic.garden rather than identity.digital, and the registry's own FAQ there is refreshingly plain about who may buy one: anybody, from anywhere, in any profession, first come and first served. No horticultural qualification, no nursery licence, no UK address.

For a British garden business the sector split matters more than the registry does. A garden centre is a destination with a car park, a cafe and opening hours, and nearly all of its traffic is people asking Google what is near them on a Sunday morning. A landscaper or garden designer sells a project worth thousands and gets found through photographs, referrals and a board at the end of a driveway. The first of those is served better by a .co.uk and a well kept Business Profile. The second carries a .garden comfortably, because its address turns up on a design pack rather than in a local search result.

Seasonality is the other honest note. Garden trade concentrates between March and September while a domain bills once a year regardless, so put the renewal date somewhere you will actually see it. And unlike the singular and plural traps elsewhere in this category, there is no .gardens in the root zone, so a mistyped plural simply fails rather than landing on somebody else.

The honest answer

Is .garden the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.garden works well if

  • You design or build gardens, so the address appears on a plan, a quote pack and a board at the end of a drive rather than in a search result.
  • You sell plants, seeds or tools to gardeners across the country, and the UK signal in a .co.uk buys you nothing you do not already have.
  • You run a community garden, an allotment association or an open garden scheme, where the word is the entire description.
  • Your business name and the word garden make a phrase that reads naturally, so the address is one thing rather than a name plus a category.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are a garden centre living on footfall from a twenty minute radius. Those customers arrive through Google Maps, and Google reads a .co.uk as British while a .garden points nowhere.
  • Your customers skew older and type the ending they have used since 2003. A .garden address gets read out on the phone more often than it gets typed correctly.
  • You do tree surgery, fencing and driveways as well. The word narrows you to the one job you might not want to be best known for.

Head to head

.garden vs .co.uk: which should you register?

For a garden business this usually is the whole decision, and the two are not close. A .co.uk runs at a little over a third of a .garden each year, transfers into 365i free and almost instantly because a .uk transfer is an IPS tag change at Nominet rather than a multi day process, and carries the country signal Google states it reads.

What .garden gives back is description. On a van, a planting plan or a card handed over at a garden show, an address ending .garden explains the business without a strapline. A .co.uk explains nothing and never has, which is fine, because the words in front of it do that job instead.

The .uk namespace also offers something no generic extension can. Under Nominet's consent based rules a UK individual's name and address are not published in the public record, at no extra cost. On .garden, keeping your home address off the record is a paid add on.

.garden domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .garden domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Anyone, anywhere. The registry states on nic.garden that there are no special eligibility requirements and that registration is available worldwide on a first come, first served basis. You do not need a horticultural qualification, a nursery licence or a UK address. That openness is why a .garden name you want may already belong to somebody outside the trade, and equally why nobody registering one has to prove anything about themselves to anybody.

Registry Services, LLC, which trades as GoDaddy Registry. IANA's delegation record shows .garden entering the root zone on 23 October 2014 under Top Level Domain Holdings Limited and transferring to Registry Services on 14 September 2021. That makes it the odd one out in this category, where every other extension sits with Identity Digital. The change makes no practical difference to registering or renewing, but it is why the policy documents live at nic.garden rather than on the Identity Digital site.

No, a garden centre should buy the .co.uk first. Centres live on people within driving distance deciding where to go, and that traffic arrives through Google Maps and the Business Profile behind it. Google states that country code extensions signal which country a site is intended for and that generic extensions do not. Get the .co.uk, get the Business Profile right, and add the .garden afterwards if you want it for the van and the signage.

They will remember the word and forget the ending. Every descriptive extension has this problem and it is sharper where customers are mostly retired, because the ending most British people type without thinking is .co.uk and a fair number of browsers still guess .com. If .garden is going on your signwriting, register the .co.uk as well and redirect it. It costs a few pounds a year and it catches everyone who guessed.
