What is a .fun domain?

The .fun domain is for brands that don't take themselves too seriously. Entertainment venues, party planning companies, kids' activity centres, and humour websites all find .fun a natural fit. It's short, it's positive, and it tells visitors to expect a good time. Corporate team-building companies use it too, because even B2B can be fun.

Why .fun suits a campaign better than a company

Say a .fun domain out loud and something awkward happens: a good share of the people listening will hear .fund. Both strings sit in the root zone, one letter apart, and .fund has been there since 2014. That is the first practical thing to know. A .fun address survives a business card, a T-shirt or a QR code perfectly well. It struggles on the phone, and a radio advert would have to spell it.

The registry is Radix, whose portfolio also holds .online, .store, .site and .tech, with CentralNic providing the technical backend. Registration is first come, first served, with no eligibility test and no documents. Radix does hold names back: its Reserved Names Policy lets the registry withhold strings before launch and release them later into priced tiers, and it states that each tier carries its own price for registration, transfer, redemption and renewal. That last word is the one buyers miss. A premium .fun is premium every year, not only the first.

Where the extension earns its money is on something that already has a home elsewhere. A business trading on a .co.uk that puts its summer competition, its festival stand or its game on a .fun address is using the word for exactly what it does well, which is setting the tone before anybody clicks. Where we push back is on a customer who wants .fun as the only address for a limited company, an invoice footer and a support mailbox. It makes a good second domain and an uncomfortable first one, and knowing which of those you are buying is most of the decision.

The honest answer

Is .fun the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.fun works well if

  • You are naming a campaign, a competition or a seasonal microsite that sits alongside a main website on another extension.
  • The business is entertainment, gaming or family activity, and you want the address itself to do some of the tone-setting.
  • The obvious .com and .co.uk both belong to somebody else, and a short cheerful word beats a hyphenated compromise.
  • You want one word across your social handles, your print and your web address, and the .fun version is the one still free.

Look elsewhere if

  • People will reach you from a spoken instruction. Said aloud, .fun and .fund are close enough to lose visitors, and .fund is a live extension.
  • You are a clinic, a law firm or anything else that has to read as sober. The word does not stop meaning fun because you use it for conveyancing.
  • Budget decides it. A .fun runs close to three times the annual cost of a .co.uk, and that bill repeats for as long as the site exists.

Trading with UK customers who search locally? Make the .co.uk your main address and keep the .fun for campaigns. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.fun vs .co.uk: which should you register?

They pull in different directions, and that is the useful way to look at it. A .co.uk is a trading address. It tells Google the site is British, it costs little, and it is what a UK customer guesses when they cannot remember what you told them. A .fun is a piece of positioning, and it tells search engines nothing about where you are.

Where .co.uk wins: local search, price, free WHOIS privacy for UK individuals under Nominet's consent rules, and transfers that complete almost immediately because they are an IPS tag change rather than a full registrar transfer. Where .fun wins: availability, brevity and tone. The word you want is probably still free here and definitely is not on .co.uk.

Most businesses in this category end up holding both. The .co.uk carries the trading identity and the invoices, the .fun carries whatever is meant to be enjoyable, and one redirects to the other outside campaign season.

.fun domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .fun domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Yes. There is no eligibility test, no local presence requirement and nothing to send in. Radix runs .fun on a first-come, first-served basis once a name has cleared the launch phases, so the only reasons a name comes back unavailable are that somebody already holds it, that it sits on a reserved list, or that the registry has placed it in a premium pricing tier. Nothing about the extension checks what you plan to put on it.

Some will, and it is worth planning for. Both .fun and .fund are real extensions in the root zone, and the difference is one letter that disappears in speech. If your marketing is visual, this rarely bites. If you expect people to hear the address on a podcast, a radio spot or across a noisy stand at an event, either spell it out every time or register the .fund alongside it and redirect. The second option costs less than the visitors you lose.

Because the registry has put it in a premium pricing tier. Radix publishes a Reserved Names Policy that lets it hold names back before launch and release them later into tiers, each carrying its own price for registration, renewal, transfer and redemption. Short single words are the usual candidates. The part that catches people out is that the premium price applies to every renewal, not just the first year, so check the renewal figure before you commit rather than after.

Usually not, and we will say so before taking the order. The word is doing one job on the page and a very different job on an invoice, a contract or an email to a bank. For a UK business the .co.uk is the address that costs least, reads as British to both customers and Google, and never needs explaining. Buy the .fun for the campaign, the competition or the product, and keep the address on your paperwork boring on purpose.
