Why .financial describes a sector rather than a firm
Put .financial after a word and you have written a description, not a name. That is the character of this extension in one line. An address like rowanpartners.financial tells a reader what the firm does before a single pixel of the site has loaded, and it does it in the part of your branding that turns up in every email footer, every referral and every search result.
The extension reached the root zone in April 2014 and is run by Binky Moon, part of Identity Digital. Its agreement with ICANN carries three commitments that the same operator's food and drink extensions do not. Registrars have to pass on a term requiring registrants to comply with applicable law, including consumer protection, fair lending and financial disclosures. They have to tell you about that requirement at the point of registration. And anyone collecting sensitive financial data has to put reasonable security measures in place. Nobody asks to see a licence before the domain resolves. You are agreeing to terms, not passing a test.
There is a UK layer on top of all that. The Financial Conduct Authority says all financial promotions must be clear, fair and not misleading regardless of the media type, and it treats a website as a promotion. Your domain is the first part of that promotion anybody reads, so a name promising an outcome is a compliance question before it is a marketing one.
Our steer for a UK practice: keep the .co.uk as the main address, because that is where local search happens, and put .financial where the description earns its keep, on a report, a calculator or a campaign that redirects home.
Is .financial the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.financial works well if
- Your practice name has gone on both .co.uk and .com, and you would rather hold a clean exact match here than pad the name with a hyphen or the word "the".
- You publish reports, calculators or guides under their own address, and you want the extension itself to say what the content is about.
- You advise clients in several countries, so a single national extension would narrow you rather than help you.
- You need a memorable address to print on a brochure or a conference banner that quietly redirects to your main site.
Look elsewhere if
- Most of your enquiries come from people searching in your own town. A .co.uk carries a UK signal in Google that .financial cannot give you.
- The annual cost runs several times a .co.uk, every year, for as long as the firm trades. A practice with a twenty year horizon should price that properly.
- Nine letters after the dot is a lot to dictate. Read it to a client down the phone and you will spell it more often than not.
Advising UK clients from one office? A .co.uk will do more for local search and cost far less every year. See .co.uk pricing.
.financial vs .money: which should you register?
Same registry, same year, same contractual terms, and yet these two read completely differently. .financial sounds like a service that somebody is paid to provide. .money sounds like a subject somebody is writing about. That difference decides most of the choice.
Pick .financial when the site sells advice and the tone needs to be sober: an IFA practice, a corporate finance boutique, a fund administrator. Pick .money when you are building something consumer-facing that people are supposed to enjoy using, or when you want the shorter, cheaper, more speakable address.
Cost is the tiebreaker more often than people expect. .money is the least expensive of the seven financial extensions we sell and .financial is not, and the gap repeats every year rather than once.

.financial domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .financial domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. The registry runs no authorisation check and there is no firm reference number to supply. What you do agree to, through your registrar, is a term in the registry agreement requiring compliance with applicable law covering consumer protection, fair lending and financial disclosures. Separately, if you are carrying out a regulated activity in the UK you need FCA permission for that activity whatever your domain says, and the FCA rule that all financial promotions must be clear, fair and not misleading applies to your website.
For most UK advisers, no. Almost all of your enquiries begin with a local search, and Google reads .co.uk as a UK signal while it reads .financial as generic with no country meaning at all. A .co.uk also costs a fraction of the annual price. The case for .financial is a second address that describes a service or carries a campaign, sitting alongside a .co.uk that stays the permanent home.
Identity Digital reserves the right to deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer any registration at its sole discretion, including where a domain is used for activity contrary to applicable law. ICANN also runs a dispute process that lets a complaint be brought against the registry over its public interest commitments. Neither is a common outcome for an ordinary advisory firm, but both are worth knowing before you build a practice around an address somebody else can switch off.
Check the price shown on this page and multiply it by the number of years you expect to trade, because renewal is the real cost rather than registration. It sits several times above a .co.uk and it does not get cheaper with length of tenure. Every domain we register includes free DNS management, email forwarding and one free 10GB mailbox, so the annual figure covers more than the name itself. WHOIS privacy on a .financial is a paid add-on; it is only free on .uk extensions.
