How .money was contractually kept open to everyone

.money arrived in the root zone in November 2014, seven months behind .financial, .fund and .tax, and it is the broadest word of the set. That breadth is written into its contract rather than left to goodwill. ICANN classes it as a Generic String, which bars the registry from limiting registrations to one company and its affiliates, and Identity Digital went further with a published commitment not to limit registrant eligibility based on identity, nor to hold names back for whoever represents the most common use of the word. Nobody gets to corner it.

For a buyer that makes .money the one extension here you can treat as a plain English word. It suits a personal finance publisher, a budgeting app, a currency service, a payroll product, a business whose whole proposition is money moving from one place to another. It is also the least expensive of the seven financial extensions we sell, which matters when the address is a cost that repeats for as long as the company exists.

The drawback is the company the word keeps. Money is the subject line of most of the junk in anybody's spam folder, so an unfamiliar brand on a .money address starts with a little more to prove than the same brand on a .co.uk. That is a human problem, not a search one: Google reads .money as generic, with no country meaning and no penalty attached. You fix it by making the site obviously real, with a company number, a registered address, a working phone number and a privacy policy that reads as though a person wrote it.

The honest answer

Is .money the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.money works well if

  • You are building something consumer facing about personal finance, and you want an address a reader can hear once and type correctly later.
  • Your brand name works as a phrase with the word attached, so the domain reads as a sentence rather than a label bolted on.
  • You want the cheapest of the financial extensions, because the address will be renewed every year for the life of the business.
  • Your audience is international and a national extension would tell them the wrong thing about who you serve.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are a regulated advisory firm and want the address to sound sober. .money reads friendly and consumer facing, which is the opposite of what an IFA practice usually wants.
  • Your customers are cautious about money websites they have not heard of, and an unfamiliar extension on an unfamiliar brand adds one more thing for them to worry about.
  • You sell to UK customers who search locally. A .co.uk carries a UK signal in Google that .money does not, and costs less on top.

Running a regulated UK advisory practice? A .co.uk reads more established and helps you in local search. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.money vs .com: which should you register?

Almost every .money buyer is really deciding whether to accept a longer or padded .com instead. That is the actual choice, because the short .com in any money related category went years ago and what remains tends to be three words with a hyphen in it.

.com still wins on defaults. It is what people type without thinking, it carries no association with any particular topic, and it will not need explaining to a cautious customer. .money wins on the name itself. If the exact phrase you want is available here and not there, a clean two word .money beats a cluttered four word .com most days, and the annual gap between them is smaller here than for any other extension in this category.

Where budget allows, take both and redirect one at the other. That removes the question permanently and costs less than the meeting you would spend arguing about it.

They can, to a cautious visitor who has never seen the extension before, and the effect is strongest when the brand is also unfamiliar. Nothing about the extension causes it. The word simply shares a neighbourhood with a lot of spam. The fix is ordinary trust building: a company number and registered address in the footer, a real phone number, an about page with names on it, and an SSL certificate that resolves cleanly. Every domain we register includes free DNS management so those records are quick to get right.

No, and that is written into the registry agreement rather than left to policy. ICANN classes .money as a Generic String, which bars the registry from limiting registrations to a single company and its affiliates. Identity Digital has separately committed that second level registrations will be open and available to lawful registrants and that it will not limit eligibility based on identity or favour the most common usage of the term. The extension cannot be turned into a closed club later.

It is neutral. Google treats .money as a generic extension with no geographic meaning, so it neither helps nor hurts on its own. What matters is what you give up: a .co.uk carries a UK country signal that a British business can use in British results, and .money offers no equivalent. If your customers search from the UK and buy locally, that is the strongest single argument against it, and it has nothing to do with the word.

It is the least expensive of the seven financial extensions we sell, and the current figure is shown on this page. It still costs more than a .co.uk, and the difference recurs annually rather than once. Included with every registration are free DNS management, email forwarding and one free 10GB mailbox. WHOIS privacy is a paid add-on here; it is only free on .uk extensions, where Nominet does not publish a UK individual registrant address by default.
