What is a .equipment domain?
The .equipment domain serves businesses that sell, hire, or maintain equipment of any kind. Plant hire companies, catering equipment suppliers, industrial tool distributors, and medical device firms all share one thing: their customers search for equipment by type. A .equipment domain tells them they've found a supplier, not a blog post.
Who should register .equipment?
Plant hire companies, catering equipment suppliers, industrial distributors, medical device firms, and gym equipment retailers.
Why choose .equipment?
- Covers every equipment category

Why .equipment reads differently to hire and sales firms
Two businesses can both call their stock equipment and mean opposite things by it. A plant hire yard sends a machine out on Friday and wants it back on Monday. A catering distributor sells a combi oven once and hopes to sell the service contract afterwards. .equipment covers both, which is the appeal, and it is also why the word on its own settles very little for a first-time visitor.
The extension arrived early. IANA has it entering the root zone on 31 October 2013, ten days after the first four new generic extensions of the 2012 application round were delegated, which puts it in the opening wave of Latin script extensions from that programme. The ICANN registry agreement behind it was signed on 27 August 2013 as a Base, Non-Sponsored contract. That type matters more than it sounds: non-sponsored means no community body sits behind the extension deciding who qualifies, so there is no trade association to join, no plant register to appear on and no proof of stock to supply. It was delegated to Corn Station, LLC and moved to Binky Moon, LLC in the March 2018 transfer that pulled 196 extensions under one operator.
Where it earns its keep is the second contact rather than the first. Hire customers ring back. Trade buyers reorder. An address that names what you supply is easier to keep hold of in a van cab or on a rate card than a hyphenated .co.uk nobody can dictate down a bad line from a site cabin.
One thing to check before ordering: Identity Digital holds back a set of premium names across its extensions and prices those separately, so a short single-word .equipment may quote its own figure rather than the one on this page.
Is .equipment the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.equipment works well if
- You hire out plant, access gear or catering kit, and the address has to be readable off the side of a machine without squinting.
- Your trading name plus the word equipment is already how customers describe you, so the address reads as a phrase rather than a slogan.
- You are splitting a hire or spares operation away from a parent business that already trades on its own address.
- The .co.uk you wanted has gone, and everything left needs a hyphen or a filler word nobody says out loud.
Look elsewhere if
- Most of your work comes from people searching for a supplier near them. Google reads a .co.uk as a UK site and a .equipment as belonging nowhere in particular.
- The annual bill matters. A .equipment costs close to three times a .co.uk every year, and a hire business keeps an address for decades.
- Your customers are site foremen and yard managers who will type .com out of habit and never reach you at all.
Hiring out mainly to customers within an hour of your yard? A .co.uk costs a lot less and reads as local. See .co.uk pricing.
.equipment vs .supplies: which should you register?
These two land on the same shortlist and they answer different questions. .supplies is about consumables, the things a customer orders again next month. .equipment is about the kit itself, bought or hired once and looked after for years.
Pick .supplies if the revenue comes from repeat orders of stock items and the relationship is a standing account. Pick .equipment if the value sits in the machine, with parts, servicing and aftersales following it around.
Both came out of the same registry programme, both are open to anyone, and there is about three pounds a year between them. That is the least interesting part of the decision.

.equipment domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .equipment domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyAnyone, anywhere. There is no trade account to prove, no company number to supply and no requirement to sell or hire anything at all. The ICANN agreement behind .equipment is a Base, Non-Sponsored contract, the class with no community eligibility body attached to it. The one rule that runs for the life of the registration is Identity Digital's acceptable use policy, which lets the registry suspend or cancel a domain over abuse or over registration details it finds to be inaccurate. Keep the contact record current and it never comes up.
No. Google treats .equipment as a generic extension, and a keyword sitting in the extension carries no ranking weight in either direction. What moves a hire or supply business up the local results is a Google Business Profile with the right categories, contact details that match everywhere they appear, and pages naming the machines you actually stock. Google's guidance on multi-regional sites lists Business Profile signals and local addresses among the things it reads, and says generic extensions are not associated with any location.
Only if the word is doing work a .co.uk cannot. The gap repeats every year for as long as the business trades, so across twenty years it is a few hundred pounds rather than a rounding error. It earns that when the address goes on machines, rate cards and hire agreements, and the word saves an explanation each time somebody reads it cold. It earns much less when the site is a brochure people reach from a listing or a phone call anyway.
The site stops resolving, and for a hire firm that is worse than for most businesses, because vinyl on a machine outlives a website by years. An expired generic domain runs through a renewal grace period, then a redemption period where recovering the name costs a recovery fee on top of the renewal, then deletion, at which point anybody can take it. Keep it on auto renew against a card that does not expire first, and hold the .co.uk alongside as a fallback address.
