Why .actor is not a verified professional credential
Read the extension and it looks like a badge. It is not. Nobody checks an Equity card, an agent, a credit or a drama school place, and there is no application form beyond the one you fill in to buy any other domain. That matters in both directions.
In your favour, it means the name is available to you today without paperwork. Against you, it means the same is true for everyone else, including anyone who shares your name. Actors are one of the few professions where the working name is the entire brand, and a common name on a first come, first served extension is gone quietly, years before you think to look.
There is one policy worth knowing. The Identity Digital Acceptable Use Policy bans holding yourself out as having a status, credential or authorisation associated with an extension when no such thing exists. So the address describes what you do; it does not certify it, and building a site that implies otherwise is the one way to get into difficulty with the registry.
Delegated in February 2014 to United TLD Holdco Ltd, it moved to Dog Beach, LLC in June 2021 and now sits inside the Identity Digital portfolio.
Is .actor the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.actor works well if
- Your professional name is taken on .com and .co.uk, and firstnamelastname.actor is free and still reads as a sentence.
- The site is a showreel, headshots and credits, and you want the address itself to say what the page is for on a casting brief.
- You are a voice artist or a performer with a stage name you want to hold on to before somebody with the same name gets there.
Look elsewhere if
- You want the extension to prove you are working professionally. It proves nothing, and casting directors know that.
- Your name is common. If you cannot get it here you will be adding a middle initial or a number, which reads worse than a plain .co.uk.
- It costs close to four times a .co.uk each year for a site that may be a handful of pages and a video, renewed for as long as you act.
If the plain .co.uk version of your name is still free, take that first and add this alongside it. See .co.uk pricing.
.actor vs .com: which should you register?
For a performer this is nearly always a fight about availability, not about which extension is better. Two-word personal name .com registrations have been gone since the 2000s, so the honest choice is usually between yourname.actor and something like yourname-actor.com or yournameofficial.com, and the first of those is easier to say and shorter to type.
What the .com still gives you is that nobody has to think about it. Type a name into a phone, the keyboard offers .com. The safest arrangement, if you can stretch to both, is the .com or .co.uk as the address you give out and the .actor pointed at it, so a casting assistant who half remembers the name still lands on your reel.
.actor domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .actor domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. There is no eligibility check at all: no union membership, no agent, no credits, no drama school. It is sold first come, first served like any open generic extension, which is why it is available to buy in a couple of minutes. The flip side is that the extension carries no authority of its own. Anything a visitor is going to believe about your experience has to come from the credits, the reel and the agent listing on the page, not from the address bar.
Very little, unless they registered it in bad faith to trade on your reputation, in which case the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy is the route and it needs evidence of rights in the name. Sharing a name with a stranger who got there first is not a dispute, it is bad luck. The practical answers are a middle name, a stage name, or a different extension. This is the main argument for registering the version of your name you want early, while it is still a few pounds a year rather than a negotiation.
It makes no measurable difference to how you get found. Casting professionals work from Spotlight, agent submissions and self-tape links, not from web searches for your name, and Google gives no ranking advantage to a keyword in the extension. What the address does do is read clearly when it is pasted into an email or printed on a card, which is a real if modest benefit. Choose it because yourname.actor is available and reads well, not because you expect it to generate work.
