What is ModX?
MODX is an open-source PHP content management system first released in 2005. It is licensed under the GPL and maintained by MODX, LLC along with a community of developers. The current major version, MODX Revolution, is a complete rewrite of the earlier Evolution branch and uses a custom MVC architecture with the xPDO database abstraction layer.
The platform runs on PHP 7.2 or later (PHP 8.1+ supported in current releases) and either MySQL or MariaDB. Core features include resource-based content modelling (every page, image, file is a resource with custom fields called Template Variables), flexible templating using a parser-driven tag syntax, granular permissions, and an extensible package management system for add-ons. MODX is known for giving designers and developers full control over output HTML, with no opinion about markup or CSS.
MODX has a loyal user base among design-led agencies and freelance developers who value template freedom over plug-in count. The platform is included in the 365i one-click installer for owners and developers who want clean output and a flexible content model.
365i’s editorial review of ModX
MODX is the CMS for designers who want to write their own HTML. That sounds reductive but it really is the platform's defining feature. Most CMSs make decisions about your front-end markup: WordPress wraps your content in classes you didn't ask for, Drupal renders fields with default markup that takes work to override, even Craft has opinions if you don't actively reach for them. MODX has no opinions. You write your HTML, you tell MODX where to put your content, MODX gets out of the way.
I host a few MODX sites for design-led agencies in the UK and one for a freelance designer who built her portfolio on it about ten years ago and refuses to switch. The pattern is consistent: the developer or designer who picks MODX values output control above almost everything, has built their own template starter, and finds WordPress's markup output borderline offensive.
What works well: full template control. Resource-based content modelling, where every URL is a resource with custom fields, is intuitive once you've done it twice. Template Variables (the MODX name for custom fields) are well-implemented. The package marketplace covers most common needs (forms, gallery, news listings, search). Performance with MODX's built-in cache layer is good.
"MODX is what you pick when you genuinely cannot stand the markup another CMS forces on you. The platform respects your front-end work in a way nothing else really does. For the right designer, that's the whole game."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
What's annoying: the community is small and has been declining slowly. Documentation is good but not always current. The package marketplace has gaps and several once-popular packages are no longer maintained. The admin UI is functional but not as polished as Craft or modern WordPress. Onboarding a new developer takes longer than WordPress because the conceptual model (resources, chunks, snippets, plug-ins, template variables) needs explaining.
Hosting notes: MODX runs comfortably on our shared hosting from £5.99/mo for design-led editorial sites under 30,000 monthly visits. PHP memory at 256MB is plenty. MySQL 8 handles the resource tree and TV tables fine. The MODX cache directory is critical for performance and needs to be writable. Cron is supported for scheduled publish dates and email queue processing. We've never seen MODX exhaust unlimited LVE resources on our shared platform.
For agency client work or higher-traffic MODX sites, the application benefits from our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo with OPcache and dedicated database resources. The MODX cache plus OPcache gives genuinely fast page renders, good enough that most MODX sites don't need a separate full-page cache layer.
If you're a designer or design-led agency and you've never used MODX, it's worth a weekend of evaluation. Spin up an install, build a simple template, give yourself the freedom to write the markup you actually want. You'll know quickly whether the platform fits your way of working. If it does, it tends to stick. If it doesn't, you've lost a weekend, and there's a Craft CMS or WordPress option waiting.

Where ModX Fits
Best for
Design-led agencies and freelance designers who want full control over front-end markup, with a flexible resource-based content model and no opinionated output to override. Small to medium editorial and brand sites where front-end quality is a defining feature, and the developer or designer is willing to learn MODX's conceptual model.
Watch for
Community is small and has been declining slowly. Package marketplace has gaps and several once-popular packages are no longer maintained. Admin UI is functional but less polished than Craft or modern WordPress. Onboarding a new developer takes longer because of the resources/chunks/snippets/TVs conceptual model.

A ModX case from our books
A design-led brand agency in the South East joined us in 2024 with five MODX client sites previously hosted on a budget VPS. The agency typically delivers brand-led editorial sites with bespoke front-end markup, and MODX was their standardised platform. Combined traffic across the five sites was roughly 38,000 visits a month. They were paying around £28/mo for the VPS and had latency complaints.
We migrated all five sites to our shared hosting at £5.99/mo each, set PHP to 8.1, configured the MODX cache directory with proper write permissions, set up cron for scheduled publish dates, configured free SSL on all five domains, and set up CDN with pre-caching on the agency\'s flagship client site. The migration took us around eight working hours total including DNS cutovers.
UK page-load times improved by roughly 49% across the board, mostly latency. The agency saved around £4/mo (the cost reduction was small because we ran each site on its own shared plan rather than a single VPS, but the latency win was the actual point). The agency has since added two more MODX client sites on our platform.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: a small VPS hosting five small sites is rarely cheaper than five tuned shared hosting plans, and it\'s almost always slower for UK visitors when the VPS lives elsewhere.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in cms hosting
A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.
ModX Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running ModX on our hosting.
MODX Revolution runs on PHP 7.2+ (PHP 8.1+ supported in current releases) and MySQL 5.6+ or MariaDB. Our shared hosting includes PHP 8.3 default, MySQL 8, 256MB PHP memory, and cron access. The MODX cache directory needs to be writable, which our installer configures correctly. PHP's GD or Imagick extension is required for image processing, both included on our hosting platform.
Yes. MODX is in our application installer. The installer creates the database, drops the files, configures the cache directory, and walks you through the wizard which sets your site name, admin login, and basic configuration. Total install time is around 8 minutes. After install, the developer's starting point is to install a base template (the community has several starter templates) and define resources for the site's content structure.
For typical design-led editorial sites under 30,000 monthly visits, our shared hosting at £5.99/mo handles MODX comfortably with the built-in cache enabled. Past that, our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo with OPcache and dedicated database resources give noticeably better headroom. MODX's built-in cache plus OPcache means the application doesn't typically need a separate full-page cache layer unless traffic is genuinely high.
Hosting-layer support 7 days a week including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. PHP, MySQL, cron, file permissions (especially the cache directory), SSL, email, DNS, backups, migrations, and CDN configuration. We don't build MODX templates, write Snippets or Chunks, or develop custom packages as part of hosting support, those are development tasks we'd quote separately or refer to our sister site 365iwebdesign.co.uk. The MODX community forum handles application-specific questions. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.
Yes, free with our migration service. Send us your existing host's FTP and database details. We'll move the codebase, database, uploaded media, set up the cache directory permissions correctly, run the MODX upgrade if your version is older, configure SSL and cron, and test the front-end plus admin before DNS cutover. Most MODX migrations take us 2 to 5 working hours. Agency-style multi-site setups across several domains, we can move in a batch.
MODX has a clean security record relative to its size. Keep core, packages, and any custom code updated. Our hosting adds free SSL, daily backups, file permission hardening (the cache and assets directories need write permission, the rest don't), and platform-level WAF rules. For agency client work, we'd also enable two-factor authentication on admin accounts via a community package, IP-restrict the admin URL where practical, and remove the default /manager/ URL prefix to a custom path during install.
