What is Backdrop?
Backdrop CMS is an open-source content management system that forked from Drupal 7 in 2013 when the Drupal core team decided to take Drupal in a more enterprise-focused direction with Drupal 8. Backdrop was created to keep the original Drupal philosophy of accessibility for non-profits, small businesses, and small to medium organisations who didn't want or need the complexity of Drupal 8/9/10/11. It is released under the GPL.
The platform runs on PHP 7.3 or higher (PHP 8.1+ recommended), MySQL or MariaDB, and uses a configuration management system that ships changes via JSON config files rather than a complex deployment pipeline. Module and theme APIs are deliberately similar to Drupal 7, which makes porting older Drupal 7 modules straightforward.
Backdrop has scheduled minor releases with predictable upgrade paths and a community committed to long-term maintenance. The 365i one-click installer includes Backdrop for owners moving off end-of-life Drupal 7 installs and for new projects that want Drupal-style flexibility without Drupal 10's hosting and maintenance overhead.
365i’s editorial review of Backdrop
Backdrop CMS is the most underrated content management system on our installer. When Drupal made the jump from version 7 to version 8 back in 2015 it threw out the old hook-based architecture, switched to Symfony, and effectively abandoned the small-organisation market that Drupal 7 had served well. Backdrop forked at that moment and quietly carried on doing what Drupal 7 did, with bug fixes, security patches, and steady minor releases.
The result is a CMS that gives you Drupal-style content types, views, taxonomies, and field flexibility, without needing the cloud-server-grade hosting that Drupal 10 needs. Backdrop happily runs on shared hosting and feels familiar to anyone who built sites in Drupal 7. If you're sitting on a Drupal 7 site that's now end-of-life, Backdrop is the most direct migration path that keeps your content model intact.
What works well: the install is small, the codebase is readable, and the upgrade path from Drupal 7 is well-documented and supported by the Backdrop team. The configuration management system is genuinely good, you commit JSON config files alongside your code and deploy changes from staging to production cleanly. Performance on PHP 8.1+ is respectable.
"Backdrop is the right answer for small organisations who got priced out of Drupal in 2015 and have been waiting for someone to pick up the torch. We host more Backdrop sites in a quiet way than most agencies realise, mostly small charities and local government departments who want serious content modelling without a five-figure rebuild."

What's annoying: the module ecosystem is significantly smaller than Drupal's. If you depend on a niche Drupal 7 module that nobody has ported to Backdrop, you'll either need to port it yourself, pay someone to, or do without. Theme choice is also limited. The admin UI is the Drupal 7 admin UI, which has aged but still works.
Hosting-wise, Backdrop sits comfortably on our shared hosting from £5.99/mo for sites under 50,000 visits a month. PHP memory at 256MB is enough for most setups. We'd suggest enabling the cache module straight away, configuring it to write to a dedicated cache directory, and including that directory in your backup but clearing it monthly. Cron is needed and we support it. MySQL 8 handles the schema fine.
For organisations on Drupal 7 who are facing end-of-life pressure, the migration path is clearer than to Drupal 10. We'll do the move free as part of our migration service, run the official Backdrop upgrade scripts, port what we can of your modules, and flag anything that needs developer attention. Most Drupal 7 to Backdrop migrations take us between half a day and two days depending on module count and customisation.
Backdrop is not the answer for everything. If you're running a content operation big enough to justify a full Drupal 10 stack on a dedicated server, stay on Drupal. If you've grown into the Symfony architecture and need that flexibility, stay on Drupal. But for everyone else, especially small charities, local interest sites, and small to medium businesses, Backdrop is exactly the right size.

Where Backdrop Fits
Best for
Small charities, local government departments, regional non-profits, and small to medium businesses migrating off end-of-life Drupal 7 who want to keep their content model and Drupal-style flexibility without the hosting and maintenance overhead of Drupal 10. Also works well for new projects that need structured content but not enterprise scale.
Watch for
The module ecosystem is much smaller than Drupal's. Niche Drupal 7 modules may not have been ported, leaving you to port them yourself, pay a developer, or do without. Theme choice is limited. The admin UI is essentially Drupal 7's, which is logical but visually dated.

A Backdrop case from our books
A regional environmental charity in Yorkshire came to us in mid-2025 with a 12-year-old Drupal 7 site running on a creaking VPS elsewhere. Drupal 7 was officially end-of-life and their developer of record had retired. The site held around 1,800 nodes (research articles, events, member records), did roughly 14,000 visits a month, and was budgeted at around £35/mo for hosting.
They asked for two things: get off Drupal 7 before the unpatched security exposure became a problem, and reduce hosting costs. Drupal 10 would have meant a six-figure rebuild they didn't have. We ran the official Backdrop upgrade scripts, ported four custom modules (Backdrop's API is similar enough that this took us roughly 11 hours), and rebuilt their theme using a community Backdrop theme as a starting point.
End-to-end migration took us around four working days. New monthly hosting cost: £5.99 instead of £35. Page load time on Backdrop versus old Drupal 7: roughly 32% faster on PHP 8.3. The charity kept its content model, its URLs, and its workflow.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: if you're stuck on Drupal 7 and Drupal 10 isn't realistic, Backdrop is the answer most agencies don't think to suggest.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in cms hosting
A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.
Backdrop Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running Backdrop on our hosting.
Backdrop runs on PHP 7.3 or later (PHP 8.1+ recommended) and MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB equivalent. Our shared hosting includes PHP 8.3 default, MySQL 8, 256MB PHP memory, and cron access, which covers Backdrop's needs comfortably. We've hosted Backdrop sites with up to around 5,000 nodes on shared hosting without issue. Larger or higher-traffic Backdrop sites benefit from our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo, but for the typical small organisation use case, shared is plenty.
Yes. Backdrop is in our application installer. The installer creates the database, drops the files into your chosen directory, and walks you through the install wizard. The wizard asks for your site name, admin account, and timezone. Total install time is around 8 minutes. After install, the first thing to do is enable the cache module under admin > configuration > performance, and run a few cache warm-up requests against your home page.
Backdrop runs comfortably on shared hosting at £5.99/mo. Drupal 10 typically wants 512MB+ PHP memory, Composer-based deployment, OPcache and a real APCu setup, and ideally Redis for cache, all of which point to a managed cloud server at £9.99/mo or more. For a small organisation, the lifetime hosting saving of choosing Backdrop over Drupal 10 is substantial. The trade-off is module choice and the smaller community.
Hosting-layer support 7 days a week. PHP, MySQL, cron, file permissions, SSL, email, DNS, backups, migrations, and platform-level performance tuning. We don't port custom modules from Drupal 7 to Backdrop as part of standard support, that's development work and we'd quote separately or refer to our sister site 365iwebdesign.co.uk. The Backdrop community forums are the right place for application-specific module questions. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.
Yes. Drupal 7 to Backdrop is the most common Backdrop migration we do. The official Backdrop upgrade scripts handle most of it. We run them, audit the output, port any custom modules within reason, rebuild the theme using a Backdrop-compatible starting point, and test before cutover. Simple sites take half a working day. Heavily customised sites with many custom modules can take several days. We quote on inspection.
Backdrop has an active security team and publishes security advisories on a predictable schedule, similar to how Drupal 7 worked. Keep core and modules updated as advisories ship. Our hosting adds free SSL, daily backups, file permission hardening, and platform-level WAF rules. For sites holding sensitive member data, we'd also suggest two-factor authentication via the Backdrop module and IP-restricting the admin URL where practical. Backdrop's permission system is granular enough to handle complex editorial workflows safely.
