Who actually registers a .schule domain in Germany
German state schools rarely choose their own web address. Most sit under a domain belonging to the municipality or the Land education authority, arranged centrally and administered by somebody who is not the head teacher. So the audience for .schule is narrower than the word implies: independent and private schools, international schools teaching in German, language schools, tutoring services, music and driving schools, and education projects that need their own identity rather than a slot in a council structure.
Outer Moon, LLC took it into the root zone in April 2014 and Binky Moon, LLC has held it since the March 2018 consolidation. Registration is open. Nobody checks whether you are a school, which is worth saying plainly because the extension looks like an accreditation and is not one.
One contractual detail sits behind it. Education was treated as a sensitive category when the 2012 round of extensions was contracted, so the .schule registry agreement carries public interest commitments requiring registrars to bind registrants to comply with applicable law, including consumer protection and data rules, and to secure sensitive data properly. It constrains conduct, not eligibility.
Is .schule the right choice for you?

.schule works well if
- You run an independent, private or international school teaching in German and want an address that is yours rather than a page on a council site.
- You teach German or teach in German outside Germany, and the extension is the fastest way to say so before anyone reads a word of the page.
- Your school name is long, and the extension lets you drop the word Schule from the second level without losing the meaning.
Look elsewhere if
- You are a UK school. British parents search in English and expect a UK address, so a German-language extension works against you in every result they see.
- You are a German state school. Your address is almost certainly set by the local authority, and a private registration sits outside that structure.
- You expect the extension to signal accreditation. Nobody is checked at registration, so it carries no more authority than any other open extension.

.schule vs .com: which should you register?
For an international school the choice is really about which audience the address is speaking to. A .com is neutral and understood by every parent in every country, which matters when the intake is drawn from a dozen nationalities and the school is the family's first contact with a new city.
A .schule is warmer and narrower. It tells a German-speaking parent that this is a German-language institution before they read anything else, and it does nothing at all for a parent who does not read German. Schools with a mixed intake usually end up on .com or a national extension with .schule redirecting to it, which is a reasonable outcome as long as the redirect is set up and not simply assumed.

The exception is a UK school with a German stream, a bilingual programme or a German exchange arm, where a .schule pointed at that section is a neat way to address those families directly.
It means your registration agreement carries obligations most extensions do not. The .schule registry agreement includes public interest commitments requiring registrars to bind registrants to comply with applicable laws covering privacy, data collection and consumer protection, and to apply appropriate security where sensitive data is held. If you take pupil data through the site, treat that as a contractual duty as well as a legal one, and expect complaints to be taken seriously.
