Fair lending rules sit inside the .loans registry agreement

.loans is the most expensive extension in this group by a wide margin, and a lender who registers one is committing to that figure every year for as long as the book stays open. Ten renewals at the price shown on this page runs to several hundred pounds before anybody has built a website. Start with that number, because it changes what the domain has to earn.

What it buys is a word that removes all ambiguity. bridging.loans, vehicle.loans, staff.loans: each of those is a product category written into the address. Google awards nothing for that, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. People reading a link in an email do respond to it, and a broker whose company name means nothing on its own gets an instant explanation from the extension alone.

The registry agreement repays a read before you buy. ICANN treated lending as a regulated sector, so .loans carries a clause the food and drink extensions in this category do not, requiring registrars to pass on a term binding registrants to comply with applicable law. The list of laws in that clause names fair lending and debt collection outright. None of it is checked at registration; it is a contractual hook, and the registry retains the right to suspend a domain used for activity contrary to law.

For a UK firm the FCA rule bites harder. All financial promotions must be clear, fair and not misleading regardless of the media type, and a website is a promotion. So is the domain on the front of it. guaranteed.loans is a compliance conversation, not a branding one.

Registry Operators will include a provision in their Registry-Registrar Agreements that requires registrars to include in their Registration Agreements a provision requiring registrants to comply with all applicable laws, including those that relate to privacy, data collection, consumer protection (including in relation to misleading and deceptive conduct), fair lending, debt collection, organic farming, disclosure of data, and financial disclosures.

Specification 11, section 3(e) Public interest commitments, ICANN registry agreement for .loans Source

What that means if you are buying one

Organic farming sitting in a list beside fair lending tells you what this clause really is: one template applied to every string ICANN treated as a regulated sector, not lending rules drafted for .loans. Read it as a contractual hook that lets a complaint reach the registry, never as a substitute for knowing which FCA permissions your business actually holds.

Eligibility

Who is allowed to register .loans?

Anyone may register a .loans domain and no lending permission is checked, but the registry agreement binds you to fair lending and debt collection law.

Nothing is checked up front
No FCA firm reference number, no consumer credit permission and no evidence of trading is required. A .loans registration proceeds the same way for an authorised lender and for somebody who has never lent a penny.
Compliance is written into your registration
The agreement requires your registrar to include a term obliging you to comply with applicable law, and the clause names privacy, data collection, consumer protection, fair lending, debt collection and financial disclosures. Registering the domain is how you accept it.
You must be told at the point of sale
A separate clause requires registrars to notify registrants of that compliance requirement at the time of registration. This page is part of how we do that, and it is why the obligation appears here rather than only in the terms nobody opens.
If the site breaks the terms
Identity Digital may deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer a registration at its sole discretion, including for activity contrary to law. ICANN also runs a dispute process under which a third party can complain about the registry failing to enforce these commitments, which is the route by which an outside complaint reaches your domain rather than only your regulator.

Rules taken from the ICANN registry agreement for .loans, Specification 11. Registry policy can change, so check before you buy if the answer matters to you.

Not sure whether you qualify? Ask us before you order and we will check the registry rules with you. We would rather answer the question than take an order the registry will refuse.

The honest answer

Is .loans the right choice for you?

We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.

.loans works well if

  • You lend in one clearly named category and want the product written into the address, so bridging.loans or vehicle.loans does the explaining for you.
  • Your company name gives nothing away, and you would rather people learn what you do from the domain than from a strapline they will not read.
  • You run separate landing pages per product and can justify the annual cost against the campaigns that address carries.
  • You lend across borders, so a UK country extension would misrepresent where you operate.

Look elsewhere if

  • You are a local broker taking enquiries from search. The .co.uk earns a country signal, costs a fraction of this, and is what your customers expect to see.
  • The price is the highest in this whole category and it recurs annually. At the figure on this page a decade of renewals is a real line in a small firm budget.
  • The word attracts the wrong neighbours. Consumer credit is a heavily spoofed sector, and an unfamiliar brand on an unfamiliar extension has more to prove than one on a .co.uk.

Lending to UK borrowers who find you through search? A .co.uk costs far less and carries the country signal .loans cannot. See .co.uk pricing.

Head to head

.loans vs .co.uk: which should you register?

The honest framing here is money. A .loans renewal costs many times a .co.uk renewal, every year, and in exchange it gives you description rather than geography. For a lender whose borrowers are in Britain and who find them through Google, geography is the more valuable of the two.

Where .loans wins is on names a .co.uk cannot form. If the exact phrase you want is a product category, putting it left of a .loans reads better than hyphenating it in front of a .co.uk, and it survives being read out on the radio. Where .co.uk wins is everything else a small UK lender needs: local search visibility, familiarity, free WHOIS privacy for individual registrants under Nominet rules, and a transfer that completes almost immediately through an IPS tag change rather than over several days.

The pattern we would actually recommend is a .co.uk as the registered home of the business and a .loans on a single product campaign, priced as a marketing cost with a review date rather than as part of the permanent estate.

.loans domain questions, answered

What people ask us before registering a .loans domain.

Can't find what you're looking for?

The registry sets a high wholesale price and demand from the lending sector holds it there. Nothing technical justifies the gap: the DNS records, the DNSSEC support and the mail handling are identical to a .co.uk costing a fraction of it. Treat the figure on this page as an annual subscription rather than a purchase, work out what ten years of it costs, and decide whether the description in the name is worth that to the business.

You need FCA permission if the business carries out a regulated activity, and that is true whatever your domain is. The extension changes nothing about the requirement. What the registry adds is a contractual term requiring you to comply with applicable law, with fair lending and debt collection named in it. The rule most likely to catch a lender out is the FCA position that all financial promotions must be clear, fair and not misleading, which covers websites and therefore covers the name at the top of one.

Not directly. Google treats .loans as a generic extension with no country meaning, so it is neutral rather than harmful. The real cost is what you give up: a .co.uk carries a UK signal that helps a British lender in British results, and .loans has no way of supplying that. If most of your borrowers search from the UK, that missing signal is the strongest argument against the extension, well ahead of anything about the word itself.

Yes, in defined circumstances. Identity Digital reserves the right to deny, suspend, cancel, redirect or transfer any registration at its sole discretion, including for activity contrary to applicable law or in response to a court order or law enforcement request. ICANN separately runs a dispute process covering the public interest commitments in the registry agreement. Neither is aimed at ordinary businesses, but a domain that carries your entire lead flow is worth understanding on those terms before you build on it.
