Why .coach reads differently to a British audience
In Britain a coach is a bus. National Express runs coaches, schools book coaches for trips, and coach travel is an industry with its own comparison sites. That second meaning is missing from most marketing copy about this extension, which is written for an American audience where it barely registers. So test yours: read your name plus .coach aloud to somebody outside your field and see which meaning lands first.
Past that, the extension does something useful. It puts the profession into the address without needing the word twice, so what would have been janesmithcoaching.co.uk becomes janesmith.coach. For an executive, life or sports coach whose own name is the brand, that is the tidiest version of the address available anywhere.
Nobody checks whether you are qualified. There is no accreditation requirement, no professional body membership and no register to appear on. What does exist is Identity Digital's acceptable use policy, which lists holding yourself out as having a status or credential associated with an extension when it does not exist as abusive use, and reserves the right to suspend, cancel or lock the name. The registry acts on reports rather than auditing coaches, but the clause is there and it is enforceable.
Cost is the argument against. At the price on this page .coach runs at roughly six times a .co.uk, and close to twice .training or .fitness, every year for as long as you practise. For a sole practitioner that is a real line in a small budget, and the extension is not the thing that wins you a client.
Is .coach the right choice for you?
We would rather sell you the right extension once than the wrong one twice.
.coach works well if
- Your own name is the brand, so janesmith.coach replaces a longer address and puts the profession in without repeating the word.
- You work with executives or leadership teams, where a short, deliberate address does more than a padded .co.uk full of keywords.
- You coach internationally over video and would rather the address carried no country signal at all.
- Every sensible .co.uk built around your name and the word coaching has gone, and the alternatives all need a hyphen.
Look elsewhere if
- Your clients are British and will hear the address before they see it. Some will picture a bus, and all of them will reach for .co.uk first.
- Price: around six times a .co.uk and nearly twice .training, every year, on an extension that will not win you a single client.
- You need local search. A .co.uk carries a UK signal in Google that .coach does not, which matters if you fill your diary from your own county.
Coaching mainly UK clients who find you on Google? A .co.uk costs a fraction of this and does far more for local search. See .co.uk pricing.
.coach vs .co.uk: which should you register?
This is the decision almost every UK coach is actually making, and the two extensions are not competing on the same ground. .co.uk is a Nominet namespace under the UK country code. .coach is a generic extension operated by Binky Moon under Identity Digital, delegated in November 2014.
.co.uk wins on the things that convert. It carries a UK signal in Google UK results, it is what a British client types without thinking, its transfers are near instant because they are an IPS tag change, and Nominet withholds a UK individual registrant's address from public WHOIS at no cost. On a generic extension, privacy is a paid add-on. It is also a fraction of the annual price.
.coach wins on the name itself. If janesmith.co.uk is long gone and janesmithcoaching.co.uk reads like a search term, janesmith.coach is cleaner than either. Most practitioners we would advise to hold the .co.uk as the main address and add the .coach if the name is worth it.
| .coach | .co.uk | |
|---|---|---|
| UK search signal | None | Yes, a UK signal in Google UK |
| WHOIS privacy | Paid add-on | Free for UK individuals under Nominet rules |
| Transfer speed | Hours to seven days | Near instant, an IPS tag change |
| Annual cost | Around six times a .co.uk | Lowest we sell |
| Second meaning | A bus, to a British ear | None |
.coach domain questions, answered
What people ask us before registering a .coach domain.
Can't find what you're looking for?
Ask us directlyNo. There is no accreditation test, no professional body membership requirement and no register to be listed on. The ICANN registry agreement commits the operator to keeping registrations open and to not limiting eligibility by identity. What does apply is Identity Digital's acceptable use policy, which treats claiming a credential associated with an extension that you do not hold as abusive use, and lets the registry suspend or cancel the name on a report.
Some will, particularly older clients and anyone hearing the address before they see it. In Britain the word means a long-distance bus as readily as it means a mentor, and no amount of design fixes an ambiguity that lives in the spoken word. The test costs nothing: read the full address to three people outside your field and ask what they pictured. If two say transport, put the money into a .co.uk instead.
The registry prices the string higher, and there is nothing technical behind it. .coach runs at close to twice .training or .fitness on our list, and all three resolve identically, support the same records and come with the same DNS management, email forwarding and free 10GB mailbox. If the word training or fitness describes your practice equally well, the cheaper extension is the better buy and no client will ever notice.
Yes. Unlock the domain at your current registrar, get the authorisation code, and make sure the registration is more than 60 days old. A .coach transfer takes anywhere from a few hours to seven days, which is normal for a generic extension; only .uk domains move near instantly, because they are an IPS tag change rather than a full transfer. Your remaining registration time carries over and the transfer adds a year to it.
