Why .cab costs less than .taxi
Before anything about taxis: .cab was a filename extension long before it was a domain. Microsoft's own documentation describes a cabinet as "a single file, usually with a .cab extension, that stores compressed files in a file library", and Windows has shipped the format since the 1990s. The collision does not stop a .cab domain working. It does mean the word carries a second meaning to anyone technical, and a search for the bare word returns file-format results next to minicabs.
The extension itself belongs to Binky Moon, delegated on 12 December 2013, open to anyone, with no operator licence checked at any point. Where it loses is search. Taxi demand is local and it is typed as a place, a town, a station or an airport. Google reads a country-code extension as a strong signal about who a site is for, and reads .cab as generic. So the extension that looks best on a door sticker is the one that helps you least in the results a booking actually comes from.
Is .cab the right choice for you?

.cab works well if
- Your firm has a short memorable name and the address is going on vehicle livery, where four characters after the dot beat a long .co.uk.
- You are building a booking platform or an app rather than one local firm, so the geographic pull of a .co.uk is not what you need.
- You wanted a .taxi and would rather keep the £16 a year difference while saying much the same thing.
Look elsewhere if
- Your bookings come from local search. "Taxi Kettering" and "cab to the airport" are geographic queries, and .co.uk is the extension Google reads as British.
- You want the word your customers use. In the UK the licence says taxi or private hire, and the roof sign rarely says cab.
- You deal with IT departments and technical suppliers. To them .cab is a Windows archive format first, which is a small but real source of confusion.

The choice is about the word. Taxi is the licensed trade term, it is what the roof sign says, and it is what a stranger in an unfamiliar town types into a phone. Cab is shorter, friendlier, and easier to read on the side of a moving vehicle. If the address is mainly promotional, printed and repeated, .cab does the job for less. If it is the one address doing everything, buy the .co.uk instead and put the saving into being found.

Since both are generic extensions in Google's eyes, neither will help you appear for "taxi" plus a town name, which is where almost all private hire enquiries begin. Choose on how the address looks on a vehicle and reads on a card, then register the .co.uk as the address that has to rank.
Occasionally, and mostly by technical people rather than by passengers. A cabinet file is a Microsoft compressed archive format, documented by Microsoft as a single file usually carrying a .cab extension, and it has been part of Windows installers for decades. A member of the public booking a car home will never meet it. An IT supplier, a mail administrator or a security scanner might read the string differently. It is a minor consideration rather than a reason to avoid the extension, but it is worth knowing before you print it.
