What is UNA CMS?
UNA CMS (also known as UNA Community Management System) is an open-source PHP platform for building community sites, social networks, and member organisations, first released in 2017. It is the successor to the older BoonEx Dolphin platform and is licensed under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence. The platform is maintained by BoonEx along with a community of developers.
The platform runs on PHP 7.4 or later (PHP 8.1+ supported in current releases) and MySQL or MariaDB. Core features include user profiles with custom fields, friend connections and follow relationships, groups and event modules, forum and discussion features, photo and video sharing, integrated messaging, and a granular permission system. UNA ships with a marketplace for additional modules and themes, some free, some commercial.
UNA serves the same broad use case as Elgg but with a more polished out-of-the-box admin and a more active marketplace. It is included in the 365i one-click installer for community organisers, member-network operators, and special-interest groups who want a self-hosted alternative to commercial community-network platforms.
365i’s editorial review of UNA CMS
UNA CMS is what Dolphin became after BoonEx sat down and rebuilt the whole thing for modern PHP. If you remember Dolphin from the 2000s and 2010s, you'll recognise UNA's general shape; if you don't, that's fine, UNA stands on its own. The platform is for building community sites and member networks where you want full control over the data, the design, and the moderation rules.
I've hosted UNA for a couple of community organisers over the years: a hobby network with a few thousand members, a regional special-interest group, and one professional networking community for a niche industry. The common thread is the same as with Elgg, the community has identity, the organisers want ownership, and they're willing to put moderator time in to make the platform work.
What works well: the out-of-the-box admin is polished, more so than Elgg or most older community platforms. Module installation through the marketplace is genuinely smooth. Themes are a real choice, with several free and paid options that look modern. The mobile experience on the default UNA themes is reasonable, which matters when most community traffic is mobile. The permission system is granular without being overwhelming.
"UNA is what you pick when Elgg feels too dated and Discourse is the wrong shape for your community. It's a community-first CMS that takes social-network expectations seriously without trying to be Facebook."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
What's annoying: the licence model. The CC BY-NC-SA licence is unusual for a CMS, and the non-commercial provisions raise questions if you're running paid memberships, sponsored content, or any kind of revenue model. You'll want to read the licence carefully or pay BoonEx for a commercial licence option if your community has a commercial dimension. The marketplace is a mix of free and paid modules, and several useful features (advanced moderation, certain payment integrations) are paid add-ons rather than core features.
Hosting notes: UNA is moderately heavier than Elgg or basic forum platforms, mostly because of the broader feature set and the more modern UI. Our shared hosting from £5.99/mo handles UNA comfortably for communities up to maybe 500 active members. PHP memory at 256MB is enough for typical use. MySQL 8 handles the schema fine. Cron is essential, used for activity stream digests, email notifications, and various scheduled tasks. Image uploads can grow significantly, so factor in storage planning.
For larger UNA deployments (1,000+ active members, video uploads enabled, real-time chat modules), the application benefits from our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo with proper memory and database tuning. UNA's database can grow large with active social use, similar to Elgg, and CDN with pre-caching helps significantly with anonymous-user page loads.
If you're choosing between UNA, Elgg, and a hosted community platform like Mighty Networks or Circle, the trade-offs are clear. UNA gives you ownership and customisation in exchange for setup work and moderator commitment. Hosted platforms give you faster setup and less moderation overhead in exchange for monthly fees and platform dependence. There's no universally right answer; it depends on your community size, technical capability, and licensing situation.

Where UNA CMS Fits
Best for
Community organisers, member-network operators, and special-interest groups who want a self-hosted social platform with a more modern feel than older community CMSs. Hobby communities, regional special-interest groups, and professional networks where ownership of member data and customisation flexibility matter, and where the moderator team is committed.
Watch for
CC BY-NC-SA licence has non-commercial provisions; check carefully if your community has paid memberships, sponsored content, or any revenue model, you may need a commercial licence from BoonEx. Several useful features are paid marketplace modules. Image and video uploads grow storage quickly. Not the right pick for a small community that would be happier on a Discord server or a hosted platform.

An UNA CMS case from our books
A regional special-interest hobby community in the Midlands joined us in 2025 with a UNA install they\'d run for around 18 months on a shared host that didn\'t officially support the platform. The community had around 340 active members posting photos, organising local events, and using group discussions. The previous host had patchy cron support and the email notification system had been intermittently failing.
We migrated the install to our shared hosting at £5.99/mo, set PHP to 8.1, configured cron properly with verified delivery of test runs, set up free SSL, and applied file-permission hardening for the data directories. We also set up a separate weekly database export to the moderator team\'s cloud storage, and configured the server\'s mail-sending limits properly so notification emails actually went out reliably.
End-to-end migration plus the cron and email fixes took us around six working hours. Email notification reliability went from intermittent to consistent (the moderator team had been getting member complaints about missed event reminders). UK page-load times improved by roughly 41%, mostly latency. The community saved around £6/mo on hosting.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: a community CMS with broken cron and email is functionally broken. Get those right before worrying about anything else.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in cms hosting
A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.
UNA CMS Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running UNA CMS on our hosting.
UNA runs on PHP 7.4+ (PHP 8.1+ supported in current releases) and MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB. Our shared hosting includes PHP 8.3 default, MySQL 8, 256MB PHP memory, and cron access, all of which exceed UNA's minimums. Cron is essential for the community workflow (activity digests, notifications, scheduled tasks) and we configure it properly during install. PHP's GD or Imagick extension is needed for image uploads, both included on our hosting platform.
Yes. UNA is in our application installer. The installer creates the database, drops in the files, configures the cache and uploads directories with correct permissions, and walks you through the wizard. The wizard sets your community name, admin account, and basic preferences. Total install time is around 12 minutes (UNA has more configuration steps than simpler CMSs). After install, your first task is choosing a theme and enabling the modules your community needs.
Yes, with the right hosting. For communities up to around 500 active members, our shared hosting at £5.99/mo handles UNA comfortably. Past that, our managed cloud servers from £9.99/mo with dedicated database resources and proper memory are the right tier. We've hosted UNA communities with several thousand active members on mid-tier cloud servers. CDN with pre-caching helps significantly for anonymous-user page loads. Video uploads, in particular, push storage and bandwidth, so plan for those if your community is media-heavy.
Hosting-layer support 7 days a week including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. PHP, MySQL, cron, file permissions (especially for cache and uploads directories), SSL, email, DNS, backups, migrations, and CDN configuration. We don't build UNA modules, customise themes, or moderate the community as part of standard hosting support, those are application-level tasks. BoonEx provides commercial support directly. The UNA community forum is the right place for application-specific questions. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.
Yes, free with our migration service. Send us your existing host's FTP, database export, and the data directory archive (UNA's uploads, profile images, and group media live in a data directory). We'll move everything, set the data directory permissions correctly, configure cron with verified delivery, set up SSL, and test login plus a sample of profile, group, and activity views before DNS cutover. Most UNA migrations take us 4 to 10 working hours depending on data directory size and member count.
UNA's permission system is granular and the platform is reasonably well-engineered for community use. Keep core and modules updated as releases ship. Our hosting adds free SSL, daily backups (database plus the data directory), file permission hardening, and platform-level WAF rules. For communities holding sensitive member data, we'd add two-factor authentication on admin and moderator accounts via the appropriate UNA module, IP-restrict the admin URL where practical, and audit log significant actions via the UNA logging features. The data directory should sit outside the web root, which our installer handles by default.
