What is PHP Fusion?
PHP-Fusion is an open-source content management system and community portal originally released in 2003. Built in PHP with a MySQL backend, it bundles a CMS, news/article module, member management, basic forum, and a panel-driven layout system in a single install. It is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License.
The software has had several major version branches over its lifetime, with the 7.x and 9.x lines seeing the widest deployment. PHP-Fusion targets small community sites, clan and gaming portals, and small organisational websites where the appeal was a self-contained CMS-plus-forum-plus-members combination without needing to glue separate applications together.
In 2026, PHP-Fusion is best understood as a maintenance platform. New community sites almost always pick WordPress with a forum plug-in, Discourse, or a SaaS community platform instead. Existing PHP-Fusion installs continue to operate, and the application is included in the 365i one-click installer so owners of established sites can move them to modern hosting without a full rebuild.
365i’s editorial review of PHP Fusion
PHP-Fusion belongs to a particular era of the web, roughly 2004 to 2012, when running a "portal" was how clans, fan communities, and small organisations did the internet. It packaged news, forums, members, polls, and a sidebar of panels into one coherent thing, and for that brief period it was genuinely useful. I built three or four PHP-Fusion sites for clients in that window myself, and we still host a small handful of them today.
What works: the install is light, the database schema is small, and the panel-based layout system makes simple changes easy for a non-developer to do without touching code. Member management is reasonable. The bundled forum is basic but workable for a small community. Custom panels written in PHP are straightforward if you know the language.
What's dated: the admin UI is from a time before responsive design, the templating system is idiosyncratic by modern standards, and the plug-in (called "infusions") library is small and patchy. Theme selection has not aged well. Mobile rendering on default themes is often poor without custom CSS work. And the development pace, while not zero, has slowed considerably over the years.
"PHP-Fusion was great in its moment. Now it's a museum exhibit that still happens to work. If you have one running, keep it running. If you're starting a new community site in 2026, please pick literally anything else."
Mark McNeece, Founder, 365i Hosting
From a hosting perspective, PHP-Fusion is undemanding. Our shared hosting at £5.99/mo handles it without trouble. PHP 8.3 mostly works for current PHP-Fusion 9.x, though if you're running an older 7.x install you may need to drop back to PHP 7.4 to avoid deprecation warnings or actual errors in older infusions. We can switch PHP versions per site, so this is straightforward to manage. MySQL 8 is fine. Memory usage is minimal. The autoscaling cloud platform with unlimited LVE resources gives you all the headroom a typical PHP-Fusion site will ever need.
The practical things to watch for are the cache directory (which can grow), the avatars folder (which sometimes accumulates orphaned files when members leave), and the search system (which gets slow on large boards). All three are manageable with a quarterly tidy-up. We back up files and database daily and keep 30 days of retention.
If you're sitting on a PHP-Fusion site and wondering whether to migrate or rebuild, ask yourself how much active maintenance the community needs. If it's largely a static archive of articles and forum posts that nobody really updates, leave it alone. PHP-Fusion ages gracefully as a read-only-ish archive. If it's an active community where you want new features, mobile-first design, and modern moderation tools, the honest advice is to migrate to WordPress with bbPress or a SaaS forum and treat PHP-Fusion as an export source. We'll help with either path.

Where PHP Fusion Fits
Best for
Long-running clan, hobby, or small-organisation portals from the 2000s and early 2010s where the site has settled into a steady rhythm and the owner is comfortable with the admin. Established communities where rebuild cost outweighs the benefit of starting again on a modern platform.
Watch for
Development pace has slowed considerably and the infusion (plug-in) ecosystem is small and patchy. Default themes are not mobile-friendly without significant CSS work. The admin UI shows its age and is awkward on phones. Some older infusions throw warnings on PHP 8.x and may need replacing or patching.

A PHP Fusion case from our books
A regional motorsport enthusiasts\' club in the South East came to us in 2024 with a PHP-Fusion 7 site they\'d run since 2008. The site had a club news feed, a small forum (around 6,400 posts), a member roster of about 280 active members, and a calendar of events. They were paying around £14/mo on a creaking shared host elsewhere where PHP versions were stuck at 5.6 and they couldn\'t get HTTPS working properly.
We migrated them to our shared hosting at £5.99/mo, kept PHP at 7.4 because their custom infusions weren\'t safe on 8.x without code review, set up free SSL across the whole domain, and disabled three abandoned infusions that were throwing warnings. The bigger piece of work was rewriting their custom event-calendar template so the layout actually worked on phones, because their younger members had stopped using the site largely because of how it rendered on mobile.
End-to-end this took us about nine working hours over a fortnight. Mobile time-on-site doubled within two months according to the club\'s analytics, hosting cost dropped by roughly £100/yr, and the chairman got HTTPS he could actually point at.
What we would tell anyone in the same spot: PHP-Fusion sites usually break on mobile, not on the server. Spend the time on a responsive theme rebuild before you spend it on a platform migration.
Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.
What we look for in cms hosting
A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.
PHP Fusion Hosting FAQ
Common questions we hear from people running PHP Fusion on our hosting.
PHP-Fusion 9.x runs on PHP 7.4 or later (8.x supported in current releases) and MySQL 5.6+. Older 7.x installs may need PHP 7.4 or even 5.6 depending on how heavily customised they are. Our shared hosting includes PHP 8.5 by default with older versions selectable per site, MySQL 8, and 256MB PHP memory. We can drop the PHP version for an older install in seconds, that's a normal part of our 7-day support.
Honestly, no. The platform is in maintenance mode and the ecosystem around it has thinned considerably. For a new community site in 2026, WordPress with bbPress, Discourse, or a SaaS community platform like Discord (for chat) plus a basic WordPress site (for content) will all serve you better. We host all of those happily. PHP-Fusion is a fine choice for keeping an existing site alive, not for starting a new one.
Yes, PHP-Fusion is in our one-click installer. Install drops the files in place, creates the database, and walks you through the basic site setup wizard. Total install time is around 10 minutes for a fresh site. If you're migrating an existing PHP-Fusion site we'd normally do that as a manual file plus database move rather than a fresh install, that way your members, posts, and theme come with you. Free with our migration service.
Current PHP-Fusion 9.x is mostly fine on PHP 8.3, though some infusions (the platform's plug-ins) haven't been updated for newer PHP and throw deprecation warnings or errors. Older PHP-Fusion 7.x and earlier are safer on PHP 7.4. We can switch PHP versions per site through our control panel in seconds, so finding a working combination for your specific install takes us a few minutes. That's included in our hosting support.
We support the hosting layer 7 days a week, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays included. PHP versions, MySQL, SSL, cron, email, DNS, file permissions, backups, and migrations are all covered. We don't debug custom infusions, rewrite themes, or handle PHP-Fusion application development, that's sister-site work at 365iwebdesign.co.uk. The PHP-Fusion community forum is the right place for application-specific questions. Datacentre infrastructure is monitored 24/7.
Yes, free of charge. Send us your current host's FTP credentials and a database export and we'll move the whole site across, keeping members, posts, news, and theme intact. We'll set up SSL, get the PHP version right for your install, and test public and admin login before we cut DNS over. Most PHP-Fusion migrations take us four to eight working hours depending on how heavily customised the site is. We don't charge extra for older versions.
