About E107

What is E107?

e107 is an open-source content management system written in PHP and backed by MySQL. It has been around since 2002 and offers the typical CMS feature set: pages, articles, news, user accounts, forums, plugins and themes. It was particularly popular with community sites and clubs in the 2000s and still has a small but loyal following.

The core install is light, the admin area is sensible if a little dated, and the plugin catalogue covers most common needs from photo galleries to event calendars. Bootstrap-based themes and a built-in template system mean you can rebuild the front end without touching PHP if you want to.

e107 development continues at a slower pace than mainstream CMSes like WordPress or Joomla, with releases appearing every several months from a small core team. It runs comfortably on standard shared hosting and is a reasonable pick for people already familiar with it, club or community sites, or hobbyists who like its particular workflow. For new commercial sites in 2026 it is fair to point you at WordPress or a more actively developed alternative first.

Our take

365i’s editorial review of E107

e107 has been one of those long-tail CMSes I've hosted for over two decades. There aren't many of them around any more, but the ones that exist tend to be cared-for community sites, club websites, fan sites and small membership communities run by people who know e107 inside out and have no interest in switching to WordPress. I respect that. Familiarity has a real value.

I want to be straight with you, though, the same way I am about dotProject. If you're starting fresh in 2026 with no particular attachment to e107, I'd point you at WordPress or Joomla first. The communities are larger, the plugin and theme catalogues are deeper, the security patch cadence is faster, and finding a developer who can help you in a pinch is much easier. e107 still works, but the talent pool around it is small.

"e107 is a quietly capable CMS that's been overshadowed by WordPress for two decades. The people who run it tend to love it, and that loyalty is earned, but for new sites I always show clients the mainstream options first so they make an informed choice."

That said, if you're already running e107, or you have a specific reason to choose it (you know it, you have a custom plugin you wrote, or you just prefer its admin model to WordPress's), our hosting handles it perfectly well. PHP ' . PHP_VERSION_LATEST . ' and MySQL 8 work fine with the current releases. The installer takes care of the deployment, and the database structure is sensible enough that backups and restores work cleanly.

One technical thing to know. e107's plugin system has its own conventions, slightly different from WordPress's, and some older plugins haven't been updated for current PHP. The official plugin marketplace lists which ones are actively maintained, and I'd stick to those rather than older third-party uploads. Test any plugin in a staging copy before installing on your live site, especially if you're on PHP 8.3.

For community and club sites, which is where e107 has always been strongest, the built-in user management, forum integration and news system actually fit the use case better than a generic CMS. WordPress can do all of that, but with bbPress for forums and BuddyPress for community, you end up with three plugins doing what e107 does in one. If you already know e107, that's a reasonable argument for staying with it.

On the hosting side, you don't need anything special. The £5.99 shared plan runs e107 happily, including the forums and small image galleries. Daily backups are included, and our PHP version selector lets you stay on whatever PHP version your specific theme and plugins are tested on. If something breaks during a PHP version upgrade, we can roll back the version while you sort it out.

Treat an older CMS with the respect it deserves. Strong admin password, regular updates from the official source, a backup before every plugin install, and a quick check of the e107 forums before changes. Do that and you'll get years of stable service out of it.

Where E107 Fits

Best for

Existing e107 site owners, club and community websites, fan sites, small membership communities and hobbyists who already know the platform. Particularly useful where the built-in user management, forum and news features replace what would be three or four separate plugins on WordPress. Suits people who value familiarity and a self-contained CMS over the breadth of the WordPress plugin marketplace.

Watch for

e107 has a much smaller community than WordPress or Joomla, which means fewer plugins, fewer themes, and slower release cycles. Finding a developer for custom work takes longer and tends to cost more per hour. Some older plugins haven't been updated for current PHP versions, so test before installing. Mobile theme quality is variable, and headless or API-first use cases aren't the platform's strength.

An E107 case from our books

A UK motorsport club came to us in 2024 running e107 since 2009 on a host that was sunsetting. They had a 4,000-member user database, a busy forum with several years of threads, an event calendar, news archive and a custom plugin for race results that had been written by a long-departed volunteer. A WordPress migration had been quoted at £6,800 plus a year of part-time admin to clean up the data, and the committee had voted that down twice. They wanted to keep e107.

We did a free migration onto our £5.99 shared plan, kept them on PHP 8.0 because their custom race-results plugin hadn't been tested on 8.3, and configured daily backups. The whole move took 6 hours overnight with under 40 minutes of forum downtime. Twelve months on, the site has been stable, the forum is active, and the only intervention needed was a one-line config tweak when they enabled HTTPS for the first time. Their hosting cost dropped from £18 a month to £5.99 a month and the committee was relieved nobody had to learn WordPress.

What we would tell anyone in the same spot: if e107 still works for your community, you don't have to migrate. Tuned hosting buys you years of breathing room while you decide what (if anything) to do next.

Anonymised at the client's request. Industry, scale, and timeline preserved.

Hosting CMS apps

What we look for in cms hosting

A content management system is a long-term tenant on your hosting, not a quick install. We tune for what CMSs actually do day to day: an opcache configured to survive plugin and theme upgrades, PHP memory at 256MB or higher because page builders chew through it, daily backups that include the uploads directory and not just the database, and free SSL enforced from day one. We also keep an honest opinion about which CMS suits which site and will tell you when something would run better elsewhere.

FAQ

E107 Hosting FAQ

Common questions we hear from people running E107 on our hosting.

For most new sites, I would suggest looking at WordPress first because of the much larger community, plugin selection and developer pool. e107 is still a capable CMS, especially if you already know it or you specifically need the built-in user, forum and news system in one package. We support both, so we are happy to host either, but I won't pretend e107 is the obvious default for new commercial sites. It isn't.

Yes, comfortably. e107 is light on resources and runs well on shared hosting. Our £5.99 plan includes PHP 8.5, MySQL 8, OPcache, free SSL and daily backups, which is everything a typical e107 site needs. Member-heavy sites with several thousand users and an active forum work fine on the entry plan. If you grow beyond that, moving to a larger plan is straightforward.

Yes. e107 is in our one-click installer, so you choose your domain, set the admin user and database, and it deploys in under a minute. You can also install it manually by uploading the files and running the web installer. We let you pick your PHP version from the control panel, so you can stay on PHP 8.0 or 8.1 if you have older plugins, or move to 8.3 for the latest releases.

It depends on the plugin. Plugins from the official e107 marketplace that have been updated recently usually work on PHP 8.3. Older third-party plugins, especially anything written for PHP 5 or 7, may throw deprecation warnings or fatal errors. We always recommend testing in a staging copy first. If you find a plugin that isn't compatible, you can either leave the site on PHP 8.0 or 8.1 (we support those too) or replace it with a maintained alternative.

e107 has built-in forums, member management and news in the core install. WordPress needs bbPress for forums, BuddyPress or similar for member communities, and a news plugin or category structure for articles. Either approach works, but e107 is more self-contained and WordPress is more extensible. If your community site is small to medium and you don't need a long list of unusual features, e107 can be simpler. For larger sites or anything with serious commercial growth ahead, WordPress's ecosystem advantages usually win out.

Yes, and we do it for free. The process involves copying the e107 file tree, exporting the MySQL database, importing it on our servers and updating e107's config file with the new database details. We test thoroughly before pointing your domain, and the visible downtime is usually under 40 minutes for an overnight migration. We have done plenty of these, including community sites with several years of forum history and large user databases.
