What .xyz actually restricts, and what it does not
Very few registries put it in writing this flatly. XYZ.COM LLC states in its own Domain Name Policies that there are no eligibility restrictions or prerequisites limiting which applicants may apply. No country test, no company test, no sector, no documents. What the policy does restrict is the shape of the name and what happens after you own it, and those are the parts worth reading.
The syntax rules are short: letters, digits and hyphens only, no leading or trailing hyphen, a maximum of 63 characters, and no two consecutive hyphens except in the third and fourth positions where they follow "xn" for an internationalised name. Registrations run from one year to ten. The registry also reserves the right to reject, delete, revoke, suspend, cancel or transfer a name to enforce its own policies, where the information supplied is incomplete or inaccurate, to comply with a court order or a regulator, or to protect the stability of the registry itself.
The 1.111 billion numeric names
The oddest thing about .xyz is a policy quirk no other extension has copied at scale. The registry carved out every six, seven, eight and nine digit numeric name, from 000000.xyz through to 999999999.xyz, called it the 1.111B Class and prices it as a separate product at a small fraction of a standard .xyz. It exists for machine addressing, device identifiers, dated URLs and vanity numbers. For a normal buyer the practical consequence is a pricing trap in reverse: the low headline figures people quote for .xyz elsewhere on the internet are usually that numeric class, not the word you are trying to register.
Which brings up the reputation. An extension that is cheap at registry level and open to everyone gets registered in bulk, and some of that bulk is abusive. That does not make your .xyz a bad domain, and Google has never treated the extension as suspect. It does mean two practical things. Set SPF, DKIM and DMARC properly and warm the domain up before you rely on it for business email, because a new sending domain on an unfamiliar extension has less benefit of the doubt than a ten-year-old .co.uk. And accept that some non-technical customers will pause at it, in a way they will not pause at .com.
Our steer: .xyz is a fine choice for a product, a startup, a personal site or anything where a short available name beats a familiar extension. It is a poor choice as the permanent address of a business selling to cautious UK buyers, and it is not the budget option people assume.

What that means if you are buying one
Open registration is the whole proposition, and it cuts both ways. Nothing stands between you and the name you want, which is why short .xyz names still exist in categories where .com ran out twenty years ago. Nothing stands between a bulk registrant and ten thousand names either, which is where the extension gets its mixed reputation.
Is .xyz the right choice for you?

- You are naming a startup, a product or a side project and the exact word matters far more than the extension after it.
- The .com is taken by a squatter asking five figures, and a short clean .xyz beats a long compromise .com you will spell out every time.
- Your audience lives online and reads a domain as a name rather than a credential, so an unfamiliar extension costs you nothing.
- You need a machine-readable or numeric address, where the registry's separate 1.111B numeric class is priced for volume.
Look elsewhere if
- It is not the cheap option here. Our .xyz price sits above our .com price, so if you picked it to save money, compare the two before you order.
- Your customers are cautious or non-technical. A quote or invoice from a .xyz address gets a second look that the same one from a .co.uk does not.
- You sell to UK buyers who search locally. Google reads .xyz as generic, so it carries none of the country weight of a .co.uk.
- You are setting up business email on a brand new domain and cannot spend a few weeks building a sending reputation before it matters.

.xyz vs .com: which should you register?
People frame this as new versus old, but the real question is narrower: does the extension have to do any work? On a .com it does none, because everybody already knows it. On a .xyz it either helps you (short, available, reads as modern to an online audience) or it costs you (a customer who hesitates, an email that gets a harder look from a spam filter).
The cost argument that usually gets made for .xyz does not hold here. Our .xyz price is a little above our .com price, and the very low figures quoted for .xyz elsewhere are the registry's separate numeric class rather than ordinary word names. If you want a .xyz, want it for the name.
Where .com still wins is defaults. It is what people type when they are guessing, what they assume when they hear an address, and what a printed reference will be misread as. Where .xyz wins is that the name you actually want may be sitting there unregistered, which in an established category a .com has not been since the early 2000s.

The question usually comes from having seen .xyz on spam, which is a consequence of cheap open registration rather than anything wrong with the extension.
The pennies are almost always the 1.111B Class, which is the registry's separate product covering every numeric name of six to nine digits, from 000000.xyz to 999999999.xyz. Those are priced for machine addressing and volume, not for words. An ordinary .xyz word name is priced normally, and at 365i that lands a little above our .com. Check the exact name you want rather than the headline figure.

Not by itself, but a brand new domain on any extension starts with no sending reputation, and unfamiliar extensions get less benefit of the doubt while that builds. Publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC records before you send anything, send in low volume for the first few weeks, and avoid moving an established mailing list onto a fresh domain in one jump. It is neutral. Google treats every extension that resolves through the IANA root zone as generic unless ICANN classes it a country code, so .xyz ranks on the same footing as .com. The real SEO consideration is what it lacks rather than what it costs you: a .co.uk gives Google a strong signal that a site is aimed at Britain, and .xyz gives no country signal at all. For a UK business selling to UK customers, that is a real trade-off rather than a technical penalty.
